UCLA, ADIDAS Unveil "LA Steel" Alternate Jerseys

Here's the first image of UCLA's new "LA Steel" alternate jerseys, which I guess are some sort of ode to LA's long history with steel(?).

"Wow, that is horrendous," I thought. But upon doing a little googling, I came across these:

LA Steel 1
LA Steel, 2

So, I guess these aren't as horrendous as I originally thought? But I feel like, in five to 10 years, we're going to look back and all agree these were horrendous.

They should've went all out and hired the original Blue Steel to model them.

Y U NO GET IT, UCLA?

I am not very smart, but I recognize that I am not very smart.

You read my mind.  As soon as I saw "LA Steel" I thought of Zoolander.

did they use puff paint on the numbers?

What's really horrendous is that background...  Are they trying to hide the uniforms from the Nazis?

Nothing like dancing on the field in 02...

I actually like them. I've seen way worse when it comes to uniforms, just look at some of Maryland's uniforms.

Just remember, it could always be worse.

I was going to say, LA Steel sounds like an MLS team name. Or worse WNBA

Still not giving a damn for the whole state of Michigan.

UCLA had some of the best uniforms in CFB. Bring back the baby blue and the yellow. Effeminate? No. Just a big middle finger to everyone in the country who can't be in Westwood, too.

Agreed. UCLA has some sneaky good uniforms.

These are poop.

Me three.  I'm a big fan of the old, straight UCLA uniforms.  I especially liked the ones with the old-font numerals

I like the little things that make a uniform unlike others, without going overboard.  Nobody else had those UCLA numerals.

I was very sad to see this uniform go. Those were unique, bold, traditional looking uniforms. I loved them. Honestly this was one of my favorite non Buckeye uniforms in college football as a youngster. I actually bought Les Horvath jersey/sweater that has that style of numeral.

They need to switch to Under Armor or Nike....... Never been a fan of Adidas football Unis.......

No one is going to agree in 5-10 years that these were horrendous, and that's because in 5-10 years no one will even remember it...probably because no one actually ever saw it:

Funny story:  When I was at the Rose Bowl in 2010, a douchey UCLA fan wearing aviator shades and a UCLA popped collar zip-up was whining very loudly about the not-moving line of people standing in the aisle at halftime trying to get to the bathrooms.  I said, "You're not used to this kind of crowd here, are you?"  He smiled and flicked me off.  I laughed.

Damn it, it is FLIPPED off! You FLIP someone the bird. You FLICK a booger at someone. You must be a "pop" person too. Or a "TACO Bell" pronouncer.

(grumpy old man) GOML!

I went to the Interwebs to figure this out, and then I realized it doesn't really flicking matter to me in the slightest.

+1 to both of you....funny story Bucksfan, you painted the perfect picture of an uckla douche nozzle.....but bedhed is correct, it's technically "flipped" i can't imagine flicking the bird at anyone.  It's definitely more of a flipping action rather than a flicking action.

But then again there are many many methods for how to flip the bird.

These are pretty good for Adidas. I don't think they're great by any stretch, but not bad.

Tired of the whole gloves-thing.  Unis aren't completely awful, but maybe a tad over the top.

When you're holding a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Someone has to be telling Adidas to hire a new designer.  Clearly they are losing credibility by creating awful styling.  Less is more people!

If you have alternate uniforms they should be a spin on school colors.  Black & Grey are not colors of UCLA.

I do not think that these are bad. There are far from good, but the are not bad.

For Adidas these are pretty darn solid.

Solid alternate from Adidas. Hopefully they won't put anything this decent on our weasel friends back.

Mark my words..I don't need acceptance. I'm catching interceptions on you innocent pedestrians.

Adidas is just awful.  I think Nike has been the only one to be able to take past uniforms/traditions and make them look good.  The three stripes brand is just reaching a bit these days.

ScarletArrow's picture

If you're going to do an alternate uniform, at least attempt to get a "timeless" quality about them (e.g. Ohio State's chrome helmets).  In 5-10 years so many of these uniforms (looking at you Maryland) are going to feel like those zebra stripe pants from the 90's... "What were we thinking!?"

As an aside (I know this is a post about UCLA, but's it's a B1G blog), I think Maryland would do better to feature the Terrapin rather than the Maryland state flag.  I mean if Nike can make a duck cool, then Under Armor can do something with a turtle.

M Man's picture

My gripe with Adidas is the company's never-ending quest to impose "template" designs on all of its university clients.  It is worse in basketball; but bad all around.
