Report: Happy Valley is Getting Another Joe Paterno Statue

The Joebots are at it again, folks. Take it away, Onward State:

A bronze statue of Joe Paterno seated on a bench is planned for installation outside the Tavern Restaurant in November 2015. The statue, designed by sculptor Zenos Frudakis, is in response to Rodney Erickson’s decision to remove Joe Paterno’s statue from Porter Road in July 2012.

“There’s been some level of frustration among Penn Staters with what happened with the statue at the stadium,” Ted Sebastianelli, one of the organizers of the project, said. “We wanted to come up with a way to honor Joe for all that he did for the State College community. It wasn’t just the university he impacted — it was the whole town.”

Unless Joe Paterno is sitting on a bench with his hands over his ears and his eyes closed, I fail to see how this is a good idea.

Surprised - nobody outside of Happy Valley.

To be fair, most Penn State fans hate this notion, it's a fringe group using their own money and putting it up on private property. As I said over in the forums, this is 'Murica, and in 'Murica, you are free to be a complete dumbass with your money. I could withdraw all of my money from the bank and spend it on One Direction memorabilia, and there's nothing anyone could do about it.

The hilarious part of this whole thing is that JoePa hated the original statue when it was first made anyways, he'd rather see the money go towards the university libraries. These people are using their money to build something that JoePa would hate anyways.

And before we go generalizing all Penn State fans as Joebots, I'd like to point out that the overwhelming majority of PSU-flair comments on /r/cfb were something along the lines of "Holy fuck can we just get over this already, these people make us look terrible."

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

A JoePa statue is just another surface for birds to shit on, so, like, whatever.

Maybe they could put a statue of Sandusky on the other end of that bench so the kids could sit in the middle-------opps. Too Soon?

The man did not do everything (in fact, he barely did anything) in his power to stop the abuse of defenseless children going on on HIS campus. I don't know how anyone could give him a free pass on that.

I found an appropriate design for the statue:

just another psycho, irrational, delusional Ohio St fan

This will lead to so, so, so many photo opportunities for visiting fans.

PSU people will never let the Sandusky thing go, and not in a good way (if there is one). They are more frustrated with the NCAA punishments (which appear to be doing little to impact the direction of the program) and how JoePa has been labelled rather than what JoePa and the administration did to cover up the sexual abuse of children by a coach. The general reaction from that fan base is appalling. What does a PSU fan tell their child when they ask who Joe Paterno was? He won games and helped covered up an atrocious event? It'll likely be more about the former than the latter. Screw Penn State, hope Urban beats them by 100 this year and every year.

The JoePa defenders make up probably about 10-15% of the fan base. I know a guy who was a HUGE Penn State fan, and completely dropped his loyalty after the Sandusky thing because it's so indefensible. And 95% of the PSU fans on /r/cfb have come out against the new statue being built.

I guess what I'm saying is let's not let fringe lunatics define Penn State's fan base, because we certainly wouldn't appreciate being defined by the fringe lunatics within our own fan base.

The lunatic fringe over in Happy Valley take the concept of delusion to unbelievable heights. Most of the PSU fans I've come across in my multiple trips to Happy Valley are pretty plainly delusional but the fringe are astronomically delusional.

Do you have any theories as to what caused the 5-10% drop in JoePa defenders since your other post yesterday?

You sure the statue is sitting, and not . . .

I did not follow closely all the investigations and trials. Did you?

So my knowledge is anecdotal, and could very well be inaccurate.

Could it be true what sailbum7 says in his Apr 23, 2014 11:36 AM post?

Our honor defend, we will fight to the end !

That linked comments thread is special.

At this point it, is not about what Paterno did or didn't do, because time will tell. What it is about is that at this point, hanging onto his "legend" and immortalizing him, on some level, is disrespectful to the victims of a monster.

I very much think time will not tell.  Rest assured any evidence of Paterno's involvement is long incinerated.

LOL. Having grown up in PA, and having visited that campus and "community" many times, this is not surprising.  The people in that town are very much isolated from the rest of the world.  My parent's best friends are penn state alumni, and I was told during a recent gathering to not mention Joe, and not mention Sandusky because it upsets them too much.  Although I get mad at people giving Tressel shit, I certainly don't get so upset I can't even let people around me talk about him.  It's pretty sad.

I'm sure this one will come equipped with either a blindfold or one of those cones around his neck that dogs wear so they don't chew their butts.
