USC Staffer Calls Jalen Hurd "So Soft and Terrible" in Signing Day Video

By DJ Byrnes on February 17, 2014 at 2:59p

Jalen Hurd is a five-star running back from Tennessee, and one of roughly 102 commits in Tennessee's 2014 class. His offer list was extensive.

One program that didn't offer him was Steve Sarkisian's USC. We might have got an answer as to why in a since-deleted Instragram video from USC's signing day war-room. Thankfully, this is the internet, where nothing is ever truly deleted:

The video's original purpose was to announce the official signing of Florida DB Lamont Simmons.

In the background, however, USC staffers were apparently listening to ESPN's Signing Day coverage. UT's Jalen Hurd was brought up, when an anonymous staffer interjects "Jalen Hurd is so soft and terrible. I don't know why [unintelligible]."

Tennessee fans suspect the voice was that of former Volunteers quarterback (and current USC wide receivers coach) Tee Martin.

It's a rare moment of candid talent evaluation that you'd never hear at a press conference, and it will be interesting to see who gets the last laugh: this anonymous USC staffer or Jalen Hurd.

UPDATE: USC is sorry:

Soft and terrible are 2 words I wouldn't use to describe Hurd. I can see why someone might describe him as soft, but not terrible. Some say he doesn't like contact and he avoids it.

I saw him play a couple times and I think the kid is a legit talent. Some question whether he should be a running back at the collegiate level and some teams wanted to move him to receiver during his recruitment, which he didn't like.

But his HS isn't in the top division of Tenn. HS football, so you can question the competition he was playing against and putting up crazy numbers. Case in point, I saw his HS state title game his junior year, and he had over 300 yards and 7 or 8 td's in the game. But honestly, the kid would get the ball and be in the secondary before anyone had a chance to tackle him. His o-line would get a good push and then he'd be off to the races. The kid was just bigger and faster than everyone else on the field. I was curious to see what he'd do his senior year, but he got hurt early on and had shoulder surgery.

And FWIW: Tee Martin hasn't exactly endeared himself to Tennessee fans lately. He was at Kentucky for a while as an assistant and supposedly negatively recruited against UT (which we all know doesn't happen in the SEC), and then he was given a job offer from Derek Dooley to be an assistant at UT, but instead chose to go to USC, to work for noted UT program killer Lane Kiffin. And now dissing UT's top recruit? And this coming from a guy who has a statue of himself and a street named after him in Knoxville.

While I agree that terrible may not be the right word to call Hurd, I think to be a even a good running back at the college level and pro level, soft can't be a word that even remotely describes you.  You have to be willing to take and deliver hits all game every game.  It is the most physically brutal position in football to play, which is why even elite running backs have such a short shelf life.  So in my opinion when it comes to a running back, soft isn't that far of a throw from terrible.

But Tee Martin is still a big bag a dicks.

The answer may not be at the bottom of a bottle, but it never hurts to check.

"A big bag of dicks"

Maybe it's my childish sense of humor, but I laugh every time. +1

The first part of that response kinda describes Brandon Saine.

It is cool to hear stuff like that instead of all the politically correct stuff that is normally all you get. Doesn't look soft to me, but what do I know.

People out here are happy SS left - they grabbed a better recruiter and on-field coach in Chris Petersen. Addition by subtraction

It would be funny if the USC staffer is right. Bad like 5* Derrick Green has been.

And then I told her...i'm no weatherman, but tonight's forecast is calling for several inches!

No better time to judge a player's ability and performance than after his true freshman season behind a shoddy O-Line, AMIRITE??

I could have exceeded 3.3 YPC with their o line. Hell, even PP QB Shane Morris avg 10.8 in 1 game.

Kid is 230ish and supposedly runs a 4.3. He already has the size and speed.

Add "Soft" to the Mount Rushmore of cliche's.

Don't text while driving.

"Jalen Hurd is so soft and terrible. I don't know why [unintelligible].

I think the rest was, "I don't know why they recruited him".

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

Funny, I've heard the same thing about USC '13 recruit Ty Isaac in terms of being soft.
