Ohio University Hires North Dakota's Saul Phillips

By DJ Byrnes on April 6, 2014 at 12:47a

Jeff Boals, a former fan favorite at Ohio University, has been snubbed by his alma mater for a second time. After Jim Christian dumped the Bobcats for Boston College, the media anointed Boals as a leading candidate.

In the end, Ohio's Director of Athletics Jim Schaus did indeed value head coaching experience in his hire; it was a process that took a little under 72 hours.

The end product is North Dakota State's Saul Phillips; he is of Bo Ryan's tree, having spent three years in Madison.

In 2013, under the leadership of Phillips, the Bison posted a 26-7 record. They advanced to whatever round they're calling the second round these days before eventually bowing out to San Diego State

I really like Jeff Boals for what he does on and off the court. I have heard plenty of interviews with him to know what he means to Thad and how the players really respect him.

I thought for sure that this was Boals chance.  Disappointed on the OU's AD choice.

Go Bucks!

As a Bobcat I am once again upset with this choice. Seems like another coach who is using a MAC school as a stepping stone to something bigger. Maybe I am wrong but I think Boals would have been a far better choice.

Is this even a lateral move

Boals will be a career assistant, accept it.

Agreed. The success of the Miller boys will also help in this regard.

Works for us...we have him for at least another season, assuming nobody else has any interest.
Is there anybody who legitimately gives a hoot aboiy OU athletics?

1) Glad Jeff is still with our team for now

2) He'll get his chance at a head coaching position eventually

I think the key is that he will get the *right* head coaching opportunity.

you are correct, 3 years, a sweet sixteen appearance and we are back to square one, We are a liberal, MAC school, we are not going to be a sports powerhouse. The logical move was to hire Boals, bring in a top notch bench guy and hire Trent as well. Coach Boals would have brought grit and toughness to our program!

The majority consensus among the alumni and fans was to hire Coach Boals, same as it was in 2012. How can you achieve long term stability when your program is perceived as a bus stop for a bigger payday. Christian was going to get run out of TCU when our AD came calling.Sometimes you just need an OHIO guy to get things done!

Much happy for OSU! Some sad for Mr. Coach Boals but chances come different chance.

Didn't hire you twice?  There's only one response at this point.  Fuck 'em.  Glad we get to keep him.

I hope some other MAC school hires him and he schools em.

Has Bowling Green made its choice for a HC for next year?  I had thought Boals was mentioned there as well ??
