One Designer's Gift to Ohio State

Two of the five alternative logos Blake Gantz whipped up for Ohio StateTwo of the five alternative athletic logos Gantz whipped up.

Horrified by Ohio State's improved athletic logo, designer Blake Gantz took some time to offer alternatives.

So I decided to go home, grab some grid paper, and then sketch up a few marks that I’m 100% convinced are more logical and aesthetically pleasing solutions. I obviously don’t expect the administration to give a crap about what I or anyone else thinks, but if they stumble upon this, please pray for a change of heart.

One and two are better than what OSU ended up with but still not an improvement (was one needed?) on the original IMO.
Three and four look like - palm trees. I think. Maybe.
Regardless, A for effort. Cool to see people caring enough to put some time into their own alternatives.

buckeyedude's picture

Palm tree? I see marijuana leaf, more than any design ever. Could he be sending us subliminal messages?

Heh, I grew up in Missouri having to explain that, no, my hat does not have marijuana on it.  Marijuana is seven leaves, buckeyes are leaves of 5.  Of course, being south-central Missouri, many people couldn't count, so I can understand the confusion...

I'm not a fan of the other three on his tumblr, either. Good effort, pretty creative- but no thanks.

I don't mind the second one as an alternative logo. Though what would make me really happy is going back to the logo we had, there was nothing wrong with it.

I'll have 2 with the buckeye leaf. One in red one in charcoal.

Yes! The marijuana leaf is back after 10 years...

With all due respect to this artist (and all due disrespect to the dolts who both decided to change the "old" design and who actually sketched the "new" design)...when you try and polish a turd, it still stays a turd.

No, I think you're spot on.

That's a pretty shitty comment, Dumpus.

How about just putting the Crystal Trophy in the center of the Block O since we are going to be winning so many it may as well be known as a symbol of the team?

Im glad ive got enough gear to last a lifetime, i wont spend a dollar on anything with the new garbage logo

JakeBuckeye's picture

I really don't buy anything Nike licensed or anything directly from the Ohio State athletic department anymore. I think all the Ohio State gear I actually still wear is from HOMAGE, to be honest. Their gear is so much more comfortable, stylish, better looking, classic, and classy! Only place I will still buy from, pretty much.

I like both better than the ms paint logo that was posted the other day

I appreciate his effort too especially as a designer. If OSU was going for a simple tweak (which was appearently removing the white inline in the text) - at least give us more gray, ala my renditions:

I'm not a fan of the current or future athletic logo; however, I must say this logo is sweet. LOVE the gray letters. Well done.

Thanks, it's appreciated!

Yeah, those aren't bad at all.  (That's definitely a compliment... I hate change when it comes to logos and unis.)

buckeyedude's picture

I have to say it again, I like your two options best, dude.
I like that one on the right with the black background, because it makes the gray and red pop out. The contrast between the black and the gray and red make it easier to see.
Kind of like the black that they put around the yellow stop lights now, so old people like myself can see them better.

Okay, when I started reading this thread, I thought to myself, "Those aren't very good, where's my man Gametime? He'd knockt his one out of the park, easy..."
And you know what? I was right!

Gametime's picture

Gave everyone an upvote who commented on my take to collectively say "thanks guys!" Without having to reply to each one (lazy, I know, lol).
That said, Andy - My Guy! (Common Man & Torg Voice) thanks for the support as usual!

Totally heard the Common Man voice :) Cracking me up...

I hope you were paid 1 mill for that, because it is definitely an improvement on the university's update.

Good effort by the Texas Buckeye as well.

This I see as an improvement of the original. I have never seen gray look so agressive. Nice work. I think if this was rolled out at the new logo, most would approve (there would be fans that hate it because some fans are anti-change).

Unky Buck's picture

I really like these, Gametime. The gray works very well. It's a neutral color, but it's not as demanding as black. The black comes off as negative space which throws the viewer off. Throw in the fact that they have this lettering that is completely black with a black outline around the Block O, there is no true continuity from the Block O to the lettering and is what is making it so hard to get used to.
With that being said, the only change I'd make to your's is taking out the drop shadow. Coming from an artist's perspective, I think it can distort the continuity of the image as well. You have a Block O that is outlined (as mentioned before) and is the dominate part of the image that is flat and 2-D and then the Ohio State is basically in bold print with a drop shadow that gives a 3-D feel to it. It's not tying the whole image together and takes away from the Block O, which is the central part of the image.
In regards to other options in doing what you're doing, I don't think outlining it on the outside with the "stroke" feature in Photoshop would work well either since the letters are close together, specifically throughout the Ohio part of it, and would blend that all together and look a little sloppy. If done on the inside, though, it can be kept small enough that it still varies from the original and provides just a subtle distinction of each letter. Might be worth checking out. Again, just thought I'd play devil's advocate here (I loved doing that in critiques...not to tear people down but to provide insight as to what may help better the image).

I dont even see why the logo needs to be changed.....Im an engineer and there is an old saying we use: "If it aint broke, dont fix it"

Gametime's picture

I agree...every time I'm watching ESPN or BTN & they mention us, I fear seeing that "new" logo. I really hope they don't change it at all honesty...

I'm not a big fan of option 2, but all 5 are better than the new one.  I think I like the block O best, but I want to like the interlocked; maybe with a little tweaking I would like it.

I really liked the S in the middle of the Block O

I wish we would just go back to a traditional Block O logo, I actually like the older version with the Buckeye leaf in the corner best. I say stick with tradition.

Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.

this is a pretty shotty deseign

Shotty - I'm guessing a mix of shoddy and shitty?  :-)

hodge's picture

I dunno, I thought this one was pretty elegant, really digs on the old "diamond" theme that we still use from time to time (and that OHIOKRIS is proudly displaying as his avatar):

Perhaps the color scheme, font, and weight need some tweaking, but I think this logo is pretty promising.  Maybe even add the standard "buckeye and leaf" filligree that we have currently christening the bottom right corner of our current "Block O" logo?

(Not sure anyone will see this at this point...)

Appreciate the feeback. Again, these are done in just a few hours and I literally comp'd up the first 5 I sketched. Ideally, you're given days of time to get many options to pick from and then do iterations and changes. Regardless, it was a fun experiment and I love the Bucks and wish they'd solitify some branding that doesn't need a facelift at all (like even the original "Block O"). Lastly, this kind of notoriety came so quickly for doing these that it was kind of a shock, and differing opinions come with the territory of course, for better or for worse (sick rhyme). I work pretty closely with Nike at my real job and it'd be great to be a part of the process, but I won't hold my breath...

Dude, if you have an "in" even slightly with the Nike team, you've got to get us in on that... I designed some new uni concepts too I'd like to see us outfited in too. We can make a whole presentation out of it...I'm sure the fellas here at 11W would back us up!

Blake's picture

Ha...yeah. That'd be cool of course, but probably impossible. Nike outsources a lot of their categories because A. they don't have all the man power and B. they want fresh perspectives from outside firms. But on the elite uniform and innovation stuff they do it all in-house. They consider that their forte and pride themselves on their creatives and process. I'll let you know if something crazy goes down though. Do you work at an agency anywhere in particular?

Gametime's picture

I actually work for an end-to-end interactive development group with a focus on e-Learning courses. www.kmionline.com - FWIW it's reputable but is extremely tedious & boring work, in an excellent work environment though (couldn't ask for better people to be around in a workplace). Freelance stuff I've done on the side, majorly small business & entertainment venues.
My gig before this was a production management position which let me expand on some bigger more national brands in Prudential, Comfort Suites, etc. and my crown jewel, designing an R/V for the USO.
