The timing of this really stinks, that's for sure. Pretty classless how it all went down. But in their defense, Vanderbilt has a hard time getting bowl eligible as it is. They have to schedule games, especially non-conference games, they think they can actually win, so they have Austin Peay (1-aa), U-mass (was 1-aa, now in mac), Uab (conf-usa), and wake (acc).
here's vanderbilt's 2013 schedule, as released today:
Date Opponent Location
Aug. 31 Ole Miss Nashville
Sept. 7 Austin Peay Nashville
Sept. 14 at South Carolina Columbia, S.C.
Sept. 21 at UMass Foxborough, Mass.
Sept. 28 UAB Nashville, Tenn.
Oct. 5 Missouri Nashville
Oct. 19 Georgia Nashville
Oct. 26 at Texas A&M College Station, Texas
Nov. 9 at Florida Gainesville, Fla.
Nov. 16 Kentucky Nashville
Nov. 23 at Tennessee Knoxville, Tenn.
Nov. 30 Wake Forest Nashville
Yeah, it totally sucks. Truth is we just don't play SEC teams outside of bowls. The last one was 1988 against LSU...which means even if we do end up playing an SEC team in the future, it'll probably be 30+ years since the last time. It's really the only conference that the B1G doesn't schedule with any regularity. Someone with knowledge of the inner workings can maybe shed light on why. I can only speculate that it is hard to schedule teams from a conference that plays 2 of its first 4 games of the year, on average, against teams in-conference. It's also probably why 90% of the SEC still schedules games against FCS opponents in November.
I think there are two major reasons that the SEC and B1G have a hard time scheduling games. I think the first is the one that you mentioned. Most SEC teams play 2 conference opponents while the B1G is busy losing to MAC schools which means you have a 2 week window. Also, the SEC contract require sa Thursday game fairly often and an early night game each weekend. This makes scheduling hard because the B1G doesn't really like playing on Thursdays and they have their own obligations to BTN.
Who cares. All the tsun slappies would still chirp that OSU 'only' played Vandy, even though they count their 11 games against them in their 'overall' SEC records.
I wonder why they backed out? Not that I think Vandy is a great quality opponent but it would be nice to beat a little SEC ass even though they are hardly your typical SEC team. So what do we think? UAB again...or back to good ole reliable Ohio teams that have no chance? C'mon Smith make some miracle happen buddy!

Hate to break it to you, but the Browns would run the NCAA if they only played NCAA teams. The overall talent gap between the NCAA and the NFL is gaping.
Right?!? Shows how little most consumers know about performance cars. The dudes says its gots rims and a body kit. Whoopy-doo...last time I checked, rims don't made your car "faster" unless you get a rim/tire package that is lighter (a la centripetal mass). I can't remember the last time a CAMRY saw anything but the tail lights of my BMW or EVO. Engine tuning and/or forced induction make cars fast...
And grounded to the ground?!? Haha. Factory suspension gives me nose bleeds...look like 4x4's...
"We have a quarterback, obviously, that's kind of ridiculous running the ball." - Urban Meyer
It will now cost us more to schedule a (maybe) less attractive game, since they're backing out so late. And there was no penalty/fee built into the contract for this why?
You'd think given the respect for Gordon Gee at Vanderbilt, that we might get more consideration. Unless, of course, they're down on Gee for reasons I'm unaware of.
I'd love to see this! Don't think they're available though. On Land-Grant Holyland they made a list of all the FBS teams that still have that date available. The most appealing opponent on the list was BYU. To save you the click, here it is:
Here are the teams with open dates that week: BYU, West Virginia (though this is all but impossible as they already have another neutral site game scheduled and need another home game), Tulane, Washington State, Kansas, Southern Miss, UTEP, FIU, North Texas, BC, Duke, NC State, Virginia, and Wake Forest.
Personally, I wouldn't mind BC, NC State, or Virginia, either.
I would take any one of the AQ schools + BYU. Taking a non-AQ school is going to really hurt our already-weak schedule mightily (unless the B1G can make a major rebound next year). We just got punk'd...
Are they open that weekend? Because NC State is, and NC State would be a good matchup. They're one of the better teams in the ACC this year, and NC is a solid state for recruiting. Beating them would further our exposure in that state, beyond what we already have with Withers on our staff.

its going to be really hard to find a quality opponent to replace them on such short notice
NOOOOO. I have been scouting them for 3 years for just this occasion. SO MUCH TIME WASTED. Now this law degree is completely useless.

That sucks, dude. See if you can get your money back. Ask to see their manager.
yo his IS the manager b!
I know there's a game saturday, and my ass will be there.
Now it's useless?
Taquitos.
Awe man, I was looking forward to this matchup.
I think Oklahoma has an open date
That would be awesome.
I think UNC is open as well

Actually, BED...OSU's regular season record vs. SEC teams is something like 7-3-2 (if you include Missouri the wins skyrocket).

I guess I meant during BCS era. And only counting teams that were in SEC when we played them.

I should mention, it is a sports law class so scheduling, NCAA compliance, contracts, and realignment are pretty poplar issues.

Barring some scheduling miracle, it looks like our already-boring 2013 OOC just got even more boring.
So wait... We got "Dear John"-ed by Vanderbilt?
Damn. That's cold.
Look at the bright side, I bet the letter was REALLY well written, since it came from Vanderbilt and all.
Think the Browns would be interested in filling in? Wouldn't help our strength of schedule but I think they could use the good publicity.

Boise State, do you want to try to prove yourself in Columbus?

I'm actually going to see two temas on this list play one another this weeked. Green Wave at Miners.
Miners are winless, I got the tickets for free, and I've never been to the Sunbowl.
Play BC! I want to see the reception Walrusball gets.

I wonder how much (if anything) they owe Ohio State for breaking this contract?
Nothing. Saw it on twitter earlier. Since it was a one off, and not a home-home, there was no penalty in the contract. Bad move by the AD.

I would love to see us play NC State. They're open.
Only if Philip Rivers can somehow come back and play for them again.

That was an amazing game, and we got away with the win. I think McLendon scored against us on that goal line stand, but the refs thought otherwise.
With the way he's playing right now? Not really.

I honestly want to see UVA because they're a program on the rise and would be a very quality win.

UVA is open that weekend as well.

The moment they lost to NW, it was clear they would eventually back out.
Any chance of playing TCU sooner?
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
They were just skeered, that's all.
"Here officer, hold my beer while I find my license."
Who wants to come to Columbus to get embarassed by a now VETERAN team in 2013????
apparently not Vandy. Going to tough to find a team that wants to play OSU on a potential title run.....
anyone hear of possible fll ins?

i don't know about you guys and gals, but I want an SEC team for the fill in...
