Yep, I actually learned a lot about the history of college football through those podcasts... Good guy who seemed to be as highly regarded as you can amongst colleagues...
Didn't Beano once get into a gigantic run-in with somebody in Columbus radio? He always sounded a little cantankerous even when he wasn't, and I think someone caught him on a bad day.
We didn't always agree with his takes, but he was a force in the college football world. RIP, Beano.
I was trying to figure out what to write in this space but you said it for me. I was never a huge fan and I went as far to vocal disliking of him for most of what he said but when I saw he passed, I was a little sad. Very much one of those college football legends for me in the timeframe that I grew up.
I’d like to do the last scoreboard show and then go. I don’t want to die in the middle of the football season. I have to know who’s No. 1 in the last polls. (1988)
What a shame. I think we can all agree with that wish.
The thing I liked the most about Beano: he did not care for Paterno. And would say so in a public forum. For a long time Beano was one of the only cfb writers/analysts that I know of that didn't engage in hero-worship when speaking/writing about Paterno.
Wonder what they're saying about Cook's death over at BSD?

Really sad. As a younger football fan, I found out about Beano through ESPN's CFB podcast. Guy was a font of football knowledge.

RIP Beano. Thanks for the lessons.
Beano was awesome. I loved him on the ESPN podcast. He will be missed.

The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.

Two things I remember about Beano Cook relating to Ohio State:
One year he Picked us to win the national championship and we ended up losing 4 games. I think it was Greg Frey's senior season.
The other was that one time he asked what his favorite band was and he said Ohio State.
Not bad for a Pitt guy, certainly better than Mark May. He had the grumpy old guy thing going when Corso was still just a bad coach.
