TL;DR: ESPN is by far the most expensive cable channel, producing/covering live television is also expensive. Because of ESPN's size, they negotiate to be on the lowest cable tier which means their true cost of doing business is subsidized by millions of people who never watch sports but have to pay for it. Also ESPN is no longer deeply cover topics that transcend sports (Penn State, Roethlisberger, Jerry Fine) due to conflict of interest.

Unfortunately no mention of the huge conflict of interest with the SEC.
