Is Ohio State About to Flip the No. 1 Running Back in the 2015 Class from Michigan?

Damien Harris' most recent follows

The interest is abuzz today with rumors of a possible de-commitment from the No. 1 running back in the 2015 class, Damien Harris. The Kentucky product is listed as a "solid verbal" to Michigan by Rivals, but Harris hasn't helped put down the rumors by staying silent on the matter, even after a visit by new Michigan OC Doug Nussmeier.

Today, however, his recruitment appeared to take a twist in a way that would have been impossible only 7-8 years ago: It was discovered his most two recent follows on Twitter are OSU assistant coaches Stan Drayton and Tim Hinton.

UPDATE (11:03 AM): Damien Harris has officially decommitted from Michigan, and it must be assumed Ohio State is in hot pursuit.

UPDATE (11:56 AM): Oh, boy; Michigan fans: STEP AWAY FROM THE KEYBOARD.

interesting, didn't think we would really go after a RB in this class, but if we take one away from TTUN, then let's do it!

tdible2132's picture

OSU definitely wants to take a RB in 2015 FWIW. You can't go 2 straight classes without taking a RB, and we haven't taken a true RB in 2014.

mh277907's picture

I am no recruiting expert but I think you are absolutely correct. Just because we have recruited the position well in the past two years does not mean we should go two years without taking a RB. Kids who want to be THEE running back at OSU should expect to compete and beat out other 5 star recruits everyday in practice.

I don't know what it is about this one but WOW absolutely hilarious - probably because it was close to my reaction when a scUM fan told me Hoke was planning on dropping 75lbs by next season

Sounds like a steal (in more ways than one...). He also recently followed the OU RB coach, Cale Gundy.

Interesting how he doesn't list being committed to the University of Michigan on his Twitter bio.
Granted, I have no earthly clue if he ever mentioned it, but I find it strange nonetheless.  And then there's the fact that he mentioned that he was closer to Borges than anyone else...
Interesting indeed.

Hahahahah. MGoBlog has been abuzz lately with how 2014 is a new year and there is a new post every day about OSU basketball struggles. This should be a nice dose of reality for them.

That stinks.  Hopefully we can get him back.  If not, we'll move on and find someone else.  I just hope he doesn't committ to another B1G school if we can't get him back.

Really? The kid hasn't even played a down of college football yet. Don't even know if he's a next level stud.

mh277907's picture

I'm not crowning him the next Heisman winner or anything but he is ranked in the top-5 for a reason. Just look at some of the top-5 guys in recent years - Nkemdiche at Ole Miss, Jaylon Smith at ND, Dorial Green-Beckham at Mizzou, Noah Spence at OSU, Clowney at USC, Clinton-Dix at Bama. All of these guys were ranked in the top-5 (or close) and all had immediate impacts for their teams. Obviously, there are some top-5 guys who never make it but I like the odds. So, to answer your question, yes, I am really not overly thrilled that he committed to UM. Just as they are not overly thrilled that we have the second best class in the country.

Agreed that the B1G needs that type of talent, I just want it to be in Maize and Blue

From all the tweets I'm reading he's never going to come back to the Sun and Blue. The way he's getting bashed right now its unlikely he'll ever set foot in the state again. Can't say i would blame him.

I'd be curious to hear what Jeremy or Jordan have to say about this matter. Michigan still the team to beat? Michigan in deep trouble and OSU in a good spot? My guess is he is wide open at the moment and won't be jumping into any commitments anytime soon, but it'll be interesting to see where he currently stands in his recruitment now.

I would've thought the hiring of Nussmeier would help here, but maybe Harris really liked Borges that much more. I mean, Nuss ran the offenses that featured Richardson, Ingram, and Lacy.

OldColumbusTown's picture

Actually, Nussmeier was only at Bama the past two seasons, so throw out the offenses featuring Ingram/Richardson.  He was there with Lacy and Yeldon, but you could argue Bama depended much more on their passing attack the past two years than they did prior to Nuss becoming the OC.

teddyballgame's picture

I would also like to add that, while Bama did win the championship one year while Nussmeier was there...they relied pretty heavily on a dominant defense.  The offense wasn't super prolific or anything.

TBDBITL0509's picture

Really good points, thanks! It would appear that the Alabama pedigree isn't helping UM too much early in the game. From what I read, Harris went radio silent after Nuss visited.

Maybe it had nothing to do with the coordinator as much as it did with the stellar offensive line play from last year

What have the tTUN fans been saying?

thePhilipJFry's picture

That Michigan is still #1 on his list and Nuss will close the deal.  Also all negative tweets to Harris have been done by OSU fans posing as Michigan fans on twitter.  Seriously http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/stop-tweeting-recruits

Buckeye Rocket Sci's picture

I love M(*)chigan and all, but there are a ton of assholes in our fan base.  I really doubt its Ohio State or Michigan State fans posing as Michigan fans that are tweeting at Harris.  We have enough idiots in our own fan base to do this to ourselves.

One of my favorites.
Note: I'm not saying we don't have our own fair share, still funny.

The Ohio State fanbase is a big tent, anything that exists in the world exists within this fanbase (good and bad).  I think most rational people understand this.
A very large vocal group on mgoblog believe that Michigan's fanbase (and athletic department, and school) are pure as the driven snow.  It both shocks and amuses me.

It was just a few short years ago that I was making my college choice. Although it wasn't primarily to play sports( I was invited to visit a D-3 for football) anyone's college choice is difficult. To bash someone because they aren't sure of that a year from what's necessary is bad and I can't understand why anyone, scum fans or otherwise, would post such ignorant things as a result.

"only impact a fan can have on a prospect's recruitment is a negative one."

Something that all fans who follow recruits should take to heart.

2002osubuck's picture

I was going to post the same thing. Every fan base pays needs to pay attention because this can happen anywhere. Our fans were pretty nasty to Roby and philly brown for the orange bowl after they helped win the most games in OSU history. And, we saw how social media cost us recruits last year because that sicko "fan" posted pictures with them and was a convicted sex offender. Harris' HS coach is right, there's not much positive that can come from grown men contacting kids on twitter. Ill leave it to the coaches to represent tOSU and recruit the best kids. I'll cheer for whoever we get regardless and wish well guys we don't.
