You Did It, You Beautiful Bastards

We asked for 11W readers to make a run at College Gameday by getting a banner/poster/whatever on that "fine" program, and you boy howdy did you guys deliver. We really, really love all of you crazy Buckeyes. Thanks to everyone involved, and we'll get working on that prize.

I just agreed with Desmond Howard. I need to go to church tomorrow, for sure.

idotter81's picture

But got universally criticized. I have to agree with the talking heads this time!  Hall, one of our senior leaders supposedly, totally lost his composure multiple times. I hate that he's not starting because the Bucks will need him tonight but I have no problem with UFM sitting him. He let his team down last week when he threw punches, got thrown out of the biggest game of the year so far and then acted like a jerk on his way out. I wouldn't play him at all. How you handle yourself matters and how UFM deals with it matters to the rest of the team...present and future. Go Elfein! Kick some Sparty butt!!

Bolt's picture

About 10 different people swinging (I guess it only matters if you have a closed fist, not if you're open hand wacking someone in the face) at each other in that scrum. You don't hear any moral posturing against ttun for instigating the whole thing and seemingly organizing a prison style gang-up on a 180 pound true freshman. Where's Desmond's outrage on that?
Look, if it was me, I'd probably suspend Hall too, if not for the whole game, at least half the game. I also understand that he what he was doing was going to stand up for his young teammate who was being ganged up on and he got kicked out of the Michigan game in his senior year. I'd be a total wreck myself...and while we'd all like to believe we'd be totally under control, I think a good portion of us might do something somewhat regrettable. Instead we get to listen to everyone pile on the guy for a mistake that he's, by all accounts, very embarrassed about. It's easy sit back and watch and then make yourself look good by saying that you would've done the right thing or he should've done the right thing and to harshly criticize someone who made a mistake in the heat of the moment. That's starting to become one of Kirk Herbstreit's calling cards.
Agreed, go Elflein! I thought he filled in very well last week. I have full confidence in him stepping in.

idotter81's picture

I don't disagree that he wasn't the only one who lost their composure or that should have been tossed. I saw at least 6 clear punch throwers from watching the replay repeatedly including thug Jake Ryan who also supposedly a scUM "leader" and went out of his way to come attack Dontre and others.  My point has nothing to do with the unequal treatment our guys got at the time by the refs or by the media since (who completely ignored what the 8 punks on the kick coverage team did to Dontre that started the whole thing in the first place). My only point is that Hall put himself (and UFM) in this position by losing his cool in the first place and then continuing it when he went to the locker room. I'm not trying to pile on only reacting to the decision made to not start him. I totally get why he reacted as he did especially when you know darn well as a senior leader that you throw a punch and you're gone and that will hurt your team. I'm just saying there are consequences when you do and this is it.
If Hall is only out a series, it won't matter today. If he's out longer, I hope it won't. Elfein played really well last week and I'll be cheering big #65 today as long as he's in there! Go Bucks!!

cinserious's picture

Very well put Bolt. Hall saw something wrong with his little freshman returner getting jumped and decided to help. Bad decision but not bad intentions. UM players crowding and chasing Dontre was bad intentions. Mr. Marcus didn't selfishly flick off the Wolverine crowd for himself, he did it for ALL OF US! When the 1973 Buckeyes ripped down that dreadful M-Club banner, was that suspension worthy? Didn't think so.

Life's daily struggle is choosing between saying F--ck-it, or soldiering on with your responsibilities.

00Buck's picture

Ever heard the term "kneeJERK"  that is what most of the mouths were and are...........  I for one owe Mr. HALL a Huge steak dinner, and ONE Large apology for having to put up with all this bullshit............  YOU ROCK MARCUS HALL ! I have wanted to do that to the ttun crowd since jesus was a baby !

Upon this Rock, I build my house....and Let no man put asunder

CGroverL's picture

I'm with you on this one. Hall should have shown some composure. What I don't like about the whole "fight" situation is how Royce Jenkins-Stone ripped Dontre Wilson's helmet off and did not receive any EXTRA PUNISHMENT of any kind. This is not hockey but fights (especially in rivalry games) are going to happen, right? However, Jenkins-Stone could have cause serious injury to Dontre Wilson when he ripped Wilson's helmet off. In the end, 2 Buckeyes were ejected and only one Wolverine was.... The incident that escalated the fight was Jenkins-Stone ripping Wilson's helmet off.
I'm not defending Hall, I'm simply saying that Royce-Jenkins was the escalator of the actions and if I'm Dontre Wilson, I'd be throwing some punches if my helmet was ripped off also.
But, and this is a story about me: No matter the situation, you shouldn't throw punches at a player with a helmet on and if you get your helmet ripped off, you should simply head to your sideline after retrieving your helmet. See, I got into a couple of fist fights in my high school football days. They were all in the same game though, no helmets were taken off and I lost my fights badly. My Orlando Colonial football team lost 49-0 against a team that had a truly great defensive player on their team. I played both WR and CB and it seemed like I fought with Apopka's best defensive player on nearly every play as I got my ass thoroughly kicked. I ended up with scars are my hands and wrists from throwing punches up inside my opponents facemask and ended up with a severely broken wrist.
My opponent in that game is now in the NFL's Hall of Fame and his name is Warren Sapp. Anyway....the moral of the story is "Don't throw punches at helmets, especially if you are a RB/WR". Sapp beat me to death that night. I never gave up though and found out that I had a broken wrist the following week. That broken wrist required surgery and I was in a cast for 18 MONTHS and ruined any chance I had at a baseball (my #1 sport) or football scholarship. LAST, (finally I know) that game long fight that I lost ended up ruining any sports career that I might have had AND is my only claim to fame.....I was a decent baseball/football player that lost any chance of a sports career because I was stupid enough to fight with Warren Sapp for 3 and a half quarters. What I did was stupid...I hope that Dontre Wilson grows up a little after what happened last week.
Go Buckeyes!!!

"I hope they're last in everything"

Thanks, Urb!

Scarlet_Lutefisk's picture

The moral of this story...learn to wrestle.

Bolt's picture

I may be mistaken but wasn't Jenkins-Stone the Wolverine that was ejected?
I'm not saying he should have thrown a punch by saying this...but can you really blame Dontre for swinging back in the heat of the moment when you watch the replay of that whole thing? When you're getting swarmed and surrounded by a cadre of people essentially jumping you? You're encircled with people swinging at you and shoving you...I don't think his first thought was, I better not make contact with anyone's helmet because I might hurt my wrist.

Scarlet_Lutefisk's picture

Jenkins-Stone was ejected. Dontre took at least two shots to the face after his helmet had been torn off and before he threw his final punch that showed up clearly on TV.

Plenty of others up-front sporting 11W signs too!

"Because I couldn't go for three."  - Woody Hayes

Bolt's picture

This sign prompted Herbie to rip Hall, Meyer and Ohio State fans and Howard to call Hall a disgrace to his family name. I get the feeling Herbie goes back to his trailer after these shows, stands in front of a mirror and starts beating off, "Oh yeah,'re so wholesome. You're so morally just. Way to go Herbie." I can't stand this guy anymore. I'm not saying I agree with having Hall go around flipping double birds...but to rip a young man so extensively on nat'l television for a mistake in the heat of the moment that, by all accounts, he's already very embarrassed about....and tell him he's a disgrace to his family name? If I was Marcus Hall's father, I would just hope for Desmond's sake that the two never cross paths.

Ahh Saturday's picture

What Hall did was wrong, but understandable given the heat and volatility of the moment. What those middle-aged hatchet men in their suits and ties, and studio makeup just did to Hall was much, much worse.

4thandinches's picture

Especially since when they played there were was only three cameras covering the game, and none on the sidelines.
{I may have made those stats up but you get me drift}

I wasn't born a Buckeye but I became one as fast as I could.

BuckeyeEd's picture

Think of all the great shots we missed of Woody due to the lack of cameras......He, also, lost his composure a few times.....It is hard not to, when you care about it so (TOO?)much. I myself go into un-controllable rage sometimes when confronting TSUNs fans. It is a family tradition and I refuse to talk to a shrink about it....I really do not like them....and when he first threw the birds high in the air for all of the Big House I cheered as loud as I did all game. Again, I might have a problem, but so did my Father and Grandfather. I will live with it.....Fuck Michigan!!

Bolt's picture

It's easy to sit back and make yourself look good on your national television platform by saying, oh I would've handled it this way or he should have handled it that way. It's becoming Herbie's calling card. I'm so sick of his moral superiority complex.

I hope the next time Urbz sees Herbie, he calls him a 'gigglef*ck.'
Roll Hyde!

Idaho Helga's picture

Pundits saying their fathers would have held them out of a game are being pious idiots.  Please name a single player in NCAA history whose Daddy held them out of a game.   Your kids will make a mistake someday Herbie.  Your "family name" won't be disgraced by it.   Get over yourselves.

idotter81's picture

Now, THAT, I agree with. Spare me.  Obviously, Desmond and Herbie's kids must not be teenagers yet.

Lincoln's picture

I've done many things my parents think are embarrassing, but they always have your back. Guarantee you Marcus Halls parents were pissed at him, but 10 times more pissed at these idiot chuckleheads talking about their child on national tv like that.

ohhiyo's picture

All Hall did was do what every tOSU fan wishes they could do, get on the field in front of 115,000 meechigan fans and flick them all off

The Rill Dill's picture

Herbstreit can't relate to passion on the field.  I he could----MAYBE he would have beat Michigan!!!  He hitched to Desmond's wagon---yet again.

Alex Boones Liver's picture

This just goes to show how out of touch Herbie is since his days of donning the Scarlet...does he forget the part that we play in the greatest rivalry in all of sports? Call it disrespectful, disgraceful, embarrassing, but if you back up your brother-in-arms in the heat of the battle and get booted for it, so be it.  I would have been disappointed if Hall hadn't got involved, call his actions what you must, but that is exactly the kind of thing that fuels rivalries.  Herbie has time and again shown his loyalty to OSU is lower on the totem pole than his loyalties to the joke that is ESPN.  It's doubtful, but I hope  UFM denies him access to the program as we move forward.

PAWEST1202's picture

When Dez and Herbie started going in on Hall's family, I was thinking, what about his family. Not knowing anything about his family situation, the comments struck me as incredibly disrespectful and an attempt to pander to the national media's narrative on Urban Meyer and discipline. Marcus Hall acted like a punk but it is not right to judge the character of his family for something they have no control over. He is a grown ass man who made a big time mistake.
I guarantee after three sacks given up in the first half (not all by Pat Elflien), Marcus Hall felt the gravity of his mistake. That is where the lesson is. He had to sit and watch in full dress. His anxiety on the sideline was clear to me watching it on tv, i'm sure it made an impression on his teammates.

Loved when all of them said he should have been suspended, and then hearing their reactions when Delaney came on and said it was "an easy decision" to not do so

2002osubuck's picture

Wait so they interviewed Delaney after they said all that company line crap, the eSECpn promo squad, about Hall. I watched most of it but must have missed Delany. I couldn't believe they blasted Hall like that for flipping the bird and throwing his helmet after he just got in a fight protecting his RB after getting jumped by a gang of scUM players. They left out the fact the scUM players attacked a 180 lb freshman and threw the punches that started it all in the fist place. Not to mention, it was The Game and is one of the most competitive and fierce rivalries ever. Hall wasn't right but it's not like he robbed somebody, he flipped off our hated rival fans, come on the safety police are getting ridiculous.
