Debriefing: Wisconsin

It might have been the biggest game of the season. You knew it, the team knew it, all of Buckeye Nation knew it. Your boys delivered with a 31-24 (not as close as it looked beat-down) of the Wisconsin Badgers. Wanna know how it all went down? You've come to the right place. This is your Wisconsin Debriefing.

Water cooler prep (everything you need to know…in one paragraph or two)

The Buckeye defense came out swinging forcing a three and out followed by a ridiculously efficient 4 play, 55 yard drive capitalized by a 25 yard TD pass to Evan Spencer. Welcome back Braxton. The two teams then traded possessions before giving up a 36 yard TD pass to Jared Abbrederis to knot the game at 7-7. Not content with a tie score, Miller tossed a beautiful 26 yard pass to Devin Smith to go up 14-7. End of first quarter. On the very next play of the game Joel Stave hit Abbrederis for a 64 yard gain. However, some solid D coupled with a missed FG ended in a goose-egg for the Badgers. The game stalled at 14-7 before Drew Basil hit a 45 yard field goal to put the Scarlet and Gray up 17-7. The Badgers answered on the next drive with a heavy dose of Abbrederis ending in a TD to bring the game closer at 17-14. The Buckeyes were clearly losing momentum, but a 71 yard drive ending in a 40 yard Miller to Philly Brown TD helped bolster the Buckeyes’ spirits heading into halftime.

To start the third, the Buckeyes received the ball and took it all the way down to the Wisconsin 38, but were forced to punt. The two teams then traded possessions before Bradley Roby intercepted a pass at the Wisconsin 47 giving the Buckeyes the ball at the Badger 32. The short field allowed the Scarlet and Gray to score in just seven plays with a Miller to Brown nifty 1-yard TD. 31-14 Buckeyes. On the Badgers’ next possession RB James White took it in for a TD to narrow the game at 31-21. That’s where the score would stay until roughly two minutes left in the game when Badger kicker Kyle French would hit a 42 yard FG to bring Wisconsin within a TD.  When all was said and done, those would be the final points as the Buckeyes defeated the No. 23 team in the nation to improve their winning streak to 17-0.

Talk Before The Game

The national media thinks we haven’t played anyone, but you can only play the teams on your schedule. You know...the teams that were scheduled eight years ago.

What’s Braxton’s mobility gonna be like with that knee brace?

Wisconsin has the nation’s leading rusher…but who have they played?

Nice test for the defense. Looking forward to it

VIPS in Attendance

If you’re Ohio State, you have the greatest basketball player in the league giving your team a pre-game speech, then roaming your sideline. That’s a given. In addition, the Buckeyes welcomed the largest list of current and potential commits of any game all season. Just look at the roster compiled by our very own Jordan Wagner. Excessive pyrotechnics + alternate jerseys + a win = strong returns for Ohio State football recruiting.

Talk in The Aftermath

Wait…Wisconsin had the nation’s leading rusher???

If this offense keeps their foot on the gas they can keep up with any team in the country.

This is the first time this offense was at full strength. They’ll only get better.

This team refuses to lose. 17-0!!!!!!!

Give That Man A Buckeye Leaf (Player of The Game)

Your player of the game is Braxton Miller folks. Facing a constant wave of doubt the past few weeks, all Braxton did was come out against one of the best teams in the B1G and throw for 4 TDs while rushing for 83 yards. Thanks for showing the nation why you deserve the starting spot. No disrespect to the Smooth Sensation, but Braxton is the truth.

Did You See That?! (Play Of The Game)

Did you see this?! I mean seriously did you see this? I thought it was picked off before I realized it was just Braxton being Braxton.

When you Sank Into Your Chair (The Moment Buckeye Football Disgraced Your Family)

Immediately following a beautiful pass by one Braxton Miller. Joel Stave was given time and found Jared Abbrederis for a 64 yard gain. Completely busted coverage my friends. Abbrederis was their only weapon and they found him all night. SHORE THAT UP D!!!!!

Jim Tressel’s Least Favorite Moment Of The Game

While working his way through Ken Burn’s The National Parks: America’s Best Idea Series Tressel realized the Buckeyes had a 3rd and three at the OSU 46. "RUN THE FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!" Tressel screamed but Urban’s squad failed to listen, passing the football for a 7-yard gain to Philly Brown for a 1st down. Tressel slumped back into his olive green love seat and whispered, “play the percentages” to the sky as Ellen delivered him a glass of warm milk in his favorite Akron Zips thermos.

What You Texted Your Friend At The End Of Each Quarter

First: Loving how Braxton looks, Roby couldn’t have played that TD better. Just a great throw by Stave.

Second: BRAXTON TO PHILLY!!!!!!!!!!

Third: Braxton is slowly but surely pumping life back into X-Brax. 4 TDs tie his career high.

Fourth: Big win for the Buckeyes!!! 17-0 SON. The national media might hate, but this team is for real.

It was Over When:

Stave’s 4th and four pass in the final two-minutes of the game was broken up by Doran Grant. All of Columbus rejoiced as Mark May ate crow.

Jim Tressel's least Favorite Moment of the game had me cracking up which is painful because I'm still nursing my hangover from last night. Good win, GO BUCKEYES!

I looked like Tresssel ball the whole fourth Qtr.  Handoff's up the middle, Braxton trying to run up the middle.
Not complaining, we won.

SHORE THAT UP D!!!!!!!!!!!!! Has now replaced All uR Base R belong to us!
Lost in all of this is how awesome Bennett and Carter played along the D-Line.

Articles featuring shirtless Bert should probably be banned on general principle or at least come with a warning. Fortunately, there were no woman or children around when reading this article.

Bennet was a beast! So was Hyde.
Where was Joey Bosa?
I for one was just not that impressed by this win.
We have to get better on D,

I think going into this game if someone told me our D would take away their run and Braxton Miller would throw 4 TD passes, I would have called that a success. I dont think anyone envisioned Roby getting torched. Some of that was just excellent play on the part of Stave/Abracadabra. A lot of it was on Roby. Suddenly the area of strength for the D coming into the season looks like a weakness, especially with the injury to Bryant.

I thought it would be a NCAA violation to have Wes Welker suit up and play #4 for Wiscy.

AngelHeartsBuckeyes's picture

I'm going to withhold judgment on Roby til after Northwestern. I think Roby played most of the game hurt.

First I'm reading about a Roby injury. What have you heard?

BuckeyeNation's picture

Roby hurt his back making a tackle on M. Gordon on Wisconsin's second possession in the 1st qtr. I think it was just a stinger. I do believe it had a little to do with his poor performance the rest of the game, but that's just my opinion.

headina's picture

Where is Roby's snot knocker?!

Arizona_Buckeye's picture

Excellent win Buckeyes!!!  The only thing missing was Burt's almost ready to cry look on the sidelines!!!

The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced

D-Day0043's picture

There is a reason Roby had 17 pass break ups last year, because teams weren't afraid of him and threw his way. This was by far his worst performance.
With that being said, that is what the defense dared Wisconsin to do, and they did it. Give Wisconsin credit. They knew what the deal was going to be and they were ready for it.
I'll admit I have not been a big fan of the cover 4 coverage scheme the last two years, but give the coaching staff credit, they got it fixed at half time, so they countered. We won the chess match. The staff can only do what the personnel allows them to. We may not like it, but we are not the ones in practice everyday and know exactly what the players strengths are.

Roby may have been a little hurt too; rewatching right now and he did hurt his back like 3 minutes into the game

D-Day0043's picture

Yes he did. He sucked it up and kept playing. Wisconsin did exactly what you are supposed to do and went right at him.

Buckeye06's picture

And I think Grant deserves some props; our LBers played well overall I thought.  Got lost in coverage a couple of times but they were so focused on the run so it kind of makes sense

D-Day0043's picture

Other than that god awful weak blitz on Wisconsin's last touchdown drive, where he ran into his own mans back, he played well.

Why is 11 warriors still obsessed with Bielema?  He isn't even at Wisc.  He is coach at Arkansas last I checked. Why not just knock Bo and Joe Pa too....   Oh sorry, they're dead.

It doesn't matter where Bert is, there is always time to make fun of him. ;-)

How many tackles did Borland have? I can't find the stat but it seemed like

chicago12's picture

I think he had 16 tackes.

I tried to look that up too.  Found stats for total d and individual stats for season, but can't find individual stats per game for d. If anyone knows where to find it please post.  I would like to see how the Buckeye players have faired this year per game on d.

The front 7 is nasty and young which is promising Spence and Washington and Bennett started to get there in the second half and to stop that running attack ....thats what the "analyst" said all over the nation can Ohio State stop the run ...yes yes we can. Holy you guys see Curtis Grant that kid get better each game and will lay you out. Yea Roby struggled but also the kid can come up in run support and crack you hard which is nice to see. Also it will give Roby a little motivation when they are in the film room today dont think coach Coombs wont lay into Roby and day your better than that. And did Braxton ever play with an edge the kid really shouldve had 5 TD passes if Devin Smith locates the ball earlier in the route he doesn't drop probably. and you saw in the second half that Braxton started to get his legs back making people miss all over, so for his first game in 2 weeks basically 3 weeks i think he passed the test. Next week we go to Northwestern for another night game on the road against an undefeated team ....another chance for us to shut people up, This team has passed every test how can you no be impressed or not love this team they havent lost in 635 days thats almost 2 years....... Whats that line at the of Remember The Titans at the end
"Now, I ain't saying that I'm perfect, 'cause I'm not. And I ain't gonna never be. None of us are. But we have won every single game we have played till now. So this team is perfect. We stepped out on that field that way tonight. And, uh, if it's all the same to you, Coach Boone, that's how we want to leave it."

Aesculus.'s picture

If we zoom out a bit we'll be able to see that this team has not yet reached it's potential.  But I think that's ok, there's a lot of football to be played.  Yeah the defense was embarrassed, but the offense could have put the game away in the 4th and didn't.  The point is that the whole team can do better.

MN Buckeye's picture

The defense shut down WI completely on the last drive. We had the energy and will on defense to close the door. I will remain optimistic that the team will improve.
