Ohio State Ranked Second in Coaches Poll

Another clue that the college football season is right around the corner: the release of the first poll. It's sure to get people talking, as always.

One year after not appearing in the Coaches Poll due to their postseason ban, Ohio State checks in at No. 2. The Buckeyes received three first-place votes. Alabama is No. 1.

The Big Ten has five teams in the rankings: 2. Ohio State, 17. Michigan, 18. Nebraska, 22. Northwestern, 23. Wisconsin.

Once again, the SEC is the cream of the crop, with five teams in the top 10, six in the top 25 and 11 receiving votes.

The Buckeyes open the season in 30 days against Buffalo at Ohio Stadium.

Nebraska gave georgia everything they could handle- Nebraska 18 and georgia 5
It doesn't look like the B1G gets any respect!

To be fair the rest of the B1G gets no respect from me either. You listed two teams that LOST their bowl games.
When the rest of the B1G holds up their end of the bargain and WINS their big games and THEN are ranked unjustly, that's when we should stick up for them.
Otherwise, I find nothing outrageous about those spots....

twalsh's picture

So Florida lost to Louisville in a bowl game (Louisville lost to Syracuse & Connecticut in regular season), so the ranking has them behind Louisville. I think that Northwestern should be ranked with both the these teams, but look at where Northwestern is ranked. Also South Caroline in the season they lost to LSU & Florida, and got lucky to beat TTUN, but look at where the ranking put them. I think that South Caroline should be ranked with TTUN.
I know this is preseason ranking, but this help all of the sec team because of the ranking or Strength of Schedule.
B1G fans should care about this, because this help on the Strength of Schedule.

The coaches vote on who they like/want to vote for.  This doesn't mean anything.  I agree with the commentary below, OSU wins out and we have nothing to worry about (PERIOD).

I seriously just don't see Georgia as top 5 and no way in hell is SC a top 10 team.  Florida State is probably better than both of those teams and they're sitting at 13.  I'm glad we're #2 but I've always liked starting the season somewhat unnoticed like 2002 when we started 14th.

twalsh's picture

That was back in the day, today with all of the sec BS, and I mean it's BS. B1G team will get no respect, so climbing the ranks once the BCS & the AP comes out is tuff.
Just read this!
http://www.thepostgame.com/commentary/201208/better-without-em-northern-...
Don't get me wrong, I think the sec has a few teams that are always good (and if they didn't oversign). Where would nick and alabama be today if they didn't oversign, I say they wouldn't be going for the 3rd National Title in a row!
Now once the AP gets involved with the college football ranking, you might see 9 sec teams in the top 10.
Go Bucks!!

onetwentyeight's picture

I think these rankings are perfectly fair. We are #2 and that's the rank we deserve. Bama are the returning champs so they deserve #1. We went undefeated so we're #2.
This shows us that when a B1G team DOES show up on the field, like we did last season, the voters will be fair to that team. The problem is that the other B1G teams all DIDN'T and HAVEN'T shown up on the field ... and yet we're still somehow supposed to afford them respect? For what reason exactly?
OSU has given voters plenty of reason in the last calendar year to vote them #2. The other B1G teams that ppl feel were unfairly ranked here haven't actually DELIVERED anything in order for them to be shafted.
[ EDIT: look at the B1G teams on here not named OSU and the PALTRY number of wins/appearences combined. It's pathetic. THREE total wins since the year 2000 (!!!) for non OSU teams in BCS bowls. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowl_Championship_Series ]

  • Charlie Strong, Louisville;
  • Dabo Swinney, Clemson;

So, that means there are 7 SEC coaches represented and 6 B1G coaches on the panel (not including Rutgers coach Kyle Flood). I'm not making a value judgment there, just making the observation since someone will invariably ask.

I hate the coaches poll.  Every high end coach openly states that they have no idea who the best teams are during the season as they are consumed with their own team and conference.  They delegate the voting and the whole thing is stupid.
The coaches poll should be ex-coaches if it's a coaches opinion you want.  Cooper is a member of a group that includes about all of the big name former coaches "Legends group" who are campaigning to have a say in who gets the BCS spots.

Well no preseason No.1 has won since the Reggie Bush * USC Trojans in 2004.  So that's nice. Also it appears that Hoke and Mushchamp cost us 8 votes.

OldColumbusTown's picture

Ohio State NEEDS opponents like Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Nebraska to have good non-conference wins, and then continue that trend into the B1G season.
Wisconsin beating Arizona State, Northwestern beating Cal and Syracuse, Michigan beating ND, and Nebraska beating UCLA (and then hopefully winning the Legends division and facing OSU in the B1GCC) are all extremely important to help "define" the Buckeyes' schedule this year.
If the B1G falls flat again in the non-conference, it will be tough for the conference (and by relation, OSU) to get any leeway from the polls/voters.

acBuckeye's picture

No they don't. If OSU runs the table, we will be in the title game. Simple as that.

OldColumbusTown's picture

I mostly agree, but I'm talking more in the general sense than necessarily just this year.  If the B1G wants to begin gaining more respect, they need to win the non-conference games first.  Then the bowl wins will come.
If OSU goes undefeated again for the second year in a row, no doubt they would deserve to go.  However, if there is a situation where Alabama is undefeated, Oregon is undefeated (in a "tougher" conference), and Clemson is undefeated (beating the likes of Georgia, FSU, and South Carolina), it is going to be tough for some voters to justify putting Ohio State higher in the poll based solely on the perception of their schedule compared to the others.  The B1G, as a whole, winning more OOC tilts could help put any of that discussion to rest this year, and on into the next few years.

AndyVance's picture

...depending on the number of other teams with undefeated records (okay, not likely to be three teams out there going 13-0 into the finale, but still...) or which SEC teams have 1-loss records. I agree with you in general, but I have a low-level of trust in the average poll voter.

cplunk's picture

I don't think it is that simple this time.
We know that an SEC team is going to be in. Unless every SEC team has two losses or one loss to a bad team, the voters are going to put an SEC team in the champ game.
So really, everybody else is competing for one slot. I'd like to think if we win out we are in, but if the rest the B1G stinks it up and nobody else from the B1G is ranked top 20, our schedule would be on par with Louisville's (no joke, the B1G looks that bad if we lose our out of conference games) and it would be WORSE than Clemson's (who plays Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida State.
If the B1G has stunk it up, I'd be very, very nervous if we went into the last week with us, Clemson, and Louisville undefeated. Particularly if Teddy Bridgewater and Tajh Boyd are in the running for the Heisman.
I think this year we are more reliant upon the rest of the B1G to uphold their side of the deal than we have ever been before. If they don't, we're basically in the same position the ACC or Big East champ has been in over the last decade; "Yes, you went undefeated and won your conference, but who cares?"

Poison nuts's picture

Frankly, if OSU & a team like Clemson went into the last week of the year as the only undefeated teams, then I think those 2 teams would play for a NC & that a 1 loss SEC team would be left out. Case in point, OSU would have played ND last year had they been eligible. Plenty of people would have made a fuss about it, but that's how it would have been. I'm not too worried about the conference because I think the B1G will do well. Most teams will have a huge chip on their shoulder. As for OSU - Win em all & their in.

I have no problem with this poll.  The mighty SEC will always have many teams (to the tune of 5 in the top ten) in every poll to start any season.  Until after this season that is....we'll see who's at #1 and #2 at years end.  Win out and play them...and beat em!

Some people think we’re the hunted.I don’t feel that way at all. We’re the hunter.Everybody wants an angry football team.Everybody wants a team on edge and a hungry team.If you’re a hunter, that usually equates to being hungry.

Bucksfan's picture

Everyone should be worrying about the fact that Oregon and Stanford are 3, 4 and play one another in November.

ChazBuckeye's picture

Great point!  Allow me to play devil's advocate with you for a second. Then by that rationale, the PAC 12 should be worried because no team in that conference will go unbeaten.
If OSU does, then we're in.  If not, well.....we won't be. B1G conference has taken such a hit for not being good the last few years that I don't think (unless there's some substantial improvement all around and fast) that any one loss team may ever be in the play offs or the BCS title this year.  Unfortunately we did ourselves in with 2006 and 2007 BCS Championship games IMO. Were as the PAC 12 could get in with a one loss team, if there's no unbeaten B1G team like OSU in front of them (no matter what Oregon and Stanford do against each other).

Some people think we’re the hunted.I don’t feel that way at all. We’re the hunter.Everybody wants an angry football team.Everybody wants a team on edge and a hungry team.If you’re a hunter, that usually equates to being hungry.

If the winner of the Oregon-Stanford game goes unbeaten, they will jump an unbeaten Ohio State.

ChazBuckeye's picture

Only problem is, there won't be an unbeaten PAC 12 team.  You're unfortunately correct if there's a two way tie with unbeaten teams btwn the B1G and PAC 12.  But I don't see an unbeaten team (even Oregon) with the schedules the PAC 12 teams play.

Bama's schedule is very comparable to OSU's.  No REAL tough OCC games and only two or three conference games that are legitimate tough games (may be for us, but I'm not sure as of yet).  OSU-Wiscy, NW and TTUN may be and then tB1G CG.  Bama-TX A&M away, LSU home and Auburn at home and then tSEC championship game (both teams have 7 home games).  Sorry but I don't see Va Tech giving Bama a game unless their QB has gotten MUCH better and faster too.

acBuckeye's picture

Beamer or Foster NOT there after another bad season?? You do realize that those two guys are the only reason that program is as good (define good however you want) as it's been in the last 20 years, right??!! It would take something much bigger than another .500 season to have those guys run out of Blacksburg. Virginia Tech isn't exactly a beacon of college football history/success before Beamer got there. I fully expect his program to rebound either this season or next, especially with the amount of talent coming out of Virginia in the next couple of years.
I agree that 'Bama can't brag about their schedule this year or last year when comparing it to ours, but saying Auburn is one of their tough games is hard to see. Auburn has been a train wreck the last two seasons. That's an easy W for Bama.
But I also agree that 'Bama will prob handle Va. Tech pretty easily.

Fugelere's picture

Why are we playing Florida A&M?
...oh wait it's because a SEC school backed out of game with us.

Catch 5's picture

That explains that, but what about Buffalo?

Make their asses quit! - Nick Saban

Fugelere's picture

A MAC snack for sure, but still not an FCS school.  My point was we wouldn't even being playing a FCS school if not for Vanderbilt canceling on us.
I realize Vandy isn't exactly a powerhouse in the SEC but I'd rather see our OOC opponents come from BCS automatic bid conferences and with the new play off system coming I think that's exactly what will happen.

Catch 5's picture

Oh, i don't disagree. I would rather see Bama playing Duke or Kansas instead of some FCS team, but i don't see the playoffs having that effect. If your conference is strong, a conference champ will usually get in with one decent OOC game whether the others are bears or not.
The other thing is that it really doesn't matter. If we are talking about top-10 teams, it doesn't make a difference if your opponent is the 50th ranked team or 200th. Top teams don't lose to them. I saw a study on this, and over like a decade, there were two losses by top 10 teams to teams ranked below 50. One of those was the famous Michigan loss to FCS Appy State.

Make their asses quit! - Nick Saban

Fugelere's picture

Right, if you beat a team ranked 50-200 it wouldn't matter because those are the games you're supposed to win.  However if your conference doesn't get a lot of love in the media *coughB1Gcough* you want marquee games against top 25 competition and few/no games against FCS programs.  Not only is it good for SOS but as a fan I would rather watch those games as well.

ChazBuckeye's picture

And Vandy would be a tough game (according to ESPIN).
