Michigan Gives MSU Bulletin Board Material

July 31, 2013 at 10:44a    by DJ Byrnes

Hopefully they both lose.

The attached picture was tweeted out by Hondo Carpenter of Spartan Nation. While Hoke hasn't talked too much trash to Ohio State recently, it appears some of his comments have drawn the attention of the program in East Lansing.

MSU had won the previous two games in East Lansing, but Michigan escaped last year's game in the den of inequity that is Ann Arbor on a last second field goal. Should be a fun one when these two meet on November 2nd.

Brothers fighting. That's cute.

Why can't you brothers just get along? Do you need the Brewer's Guild to help ease your tensions?

These June Recruiting Championships have them awfully confident up North... Unfortunately for them, they still have to actually play football.

I like Brandon's thinking, though... it reminds me of something I saw in a movie once... let me think, let me think... Oh yeah, now I remember:

Isn't Crean based on a fictional character?

Speaking of trolling rivals, if Hoke refers to Ohio State as "Ohio", what does he call Michigan State?

I still think someone should make a gif of the Buckeye cheerleaders spelling "State" for Brady Hoke on the sidelines so he can figure out how to spell Ohio State. Notice the irony of cheerleaders teaching Hoke to spell...lol

I don't think that what he said was that bad. I know he didn't show any respect for home field advantage. That was the only thing I seen that would be a insult? And what hoke said didn't seem to be a insult at all. IMO

Hello_Heisman's picture

Not even sure what was so insulting or motivating about those quotes.  As a Michigan fan, if Dantonio or Hollis had said something to that effect about having to play back to back games in AA, my reaction would have been "ok" and I would have moved on to something infinitely more important, like eating nachos and taking a dump.

It seems to me that Brady Hoke forgot that football fields have End Zones and are actually 120 yards. He must be planning on kicking a lot of field goals instead of scoring touchdowns...

Uhhhh.....isn't this a story about Michigan State giving Michigan plenty of thought rather than the other way around?

I guess you are reading this WAY differently than I am.  Agree to disagree.  Thanks for the DV and your perspective!

If you need bulletin board material for a rivalry game to get you hyped, you probably shouldn't be playing. David Brandon comment ties in with Hoke was saying about equal fields even if it came across in a Big Brother tone. Move along nothing to see here...

Look closely, because the closer you think you are, the less you will actually see.

Run_Fido_Run's picture

I agree that it's not a big deal, but the comments might be interpreted as a mild slight toward MSU fans/stadium. If Michigan were playing back-to-back years at Wisconsin or at PSU, I'm guessing they'd phrase things just a bit differently.

I know I'm in the minority here but I hate Sparty so much more than Michigan. I don't buy that enemy of my enemy is my friend nonsense either. Sparty fans are supreme douches who do not know their place in the universe. Mark Dantonio-despite his status in OSU lore-turns into a bigger stroke with each passing season. At least Michigan has legit history to fall back on.

Do I come off as arrogant? Shame on me, I was hoping it would be more obvious.

I'm sorry, but I don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan!

Brewster, an upvote for stating the obvious Sparty-Summer's Eve ref, but know that Dantonio has realized that MSU is his final stop. He's going to hate the wolverskunks and recruit the state of Ohio as hard as anyone.  I kinda like his snarly attitude.

Sparty is trending back to mediocrity and I tend to agree, TTUN won't have any issues with traveling to E.L. in back to back years. But I can say that because I'm not a high ranking person within the athletic department where I won't give the Spartans any extra motivations.
The biggest problem this is - is for the fans of TTUN whining about Sparty fans.

Haybucks's picture

I disagree.  As long as Dantonio is there, Sparty will play tOSU as hard as they play ttun.  Respect the D.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend, except when they are playing me.  You'd think losing as much as they've done recently to MSU would be cause for just a BIT of humility.  I hope MSU STOMPS them.

Hello_Heisman's picture

Jax, I agree with you about not underestimating Sparty (especially their defense) but did you read those quotes from Brandon and Hoke?  What did you want them to say?  They were asked about the impact of having to play in East Lansing two years in a row.  It's really a no win question if you think about it.
If they answer the way they did with "Hey, it's not a big deal, we should be able to to win whether it's in AA or EL, no excuses" then they're accused of dismissing Sparty.  If they answer with "It sucks, it's going to be a really tough challenge to have to play there in back to back years"  then they'll be accused of making up excuses in advance for losing to a team that they should beat.
I guarantee that unless they literally said "no comment" on the question, someone somewhere would have felt that Michigan provided some level of disrespect blah blah blah.
I am one of those people who subscribes to the theory that certain statements or events can motivate a team to perform at a high level in a big rivalry game (Memories of OSU going for 2 in '68, Tressel's introduction speech in 2001, "Little Brother" in 2007).  I do not find this quote, however, to be such a statement or event.
Besides, I'm not even sure why Dantonio would need to bother stressing about this.  Wasn't he the one who asked "where's the threat?" in relation to Michigan?

Run_Fido_Run's picture

A good (prudent) response might be to split the difference . . . something like, "Spartan Stadium is a tough place to play, with great fans, against a tough program and bitter rival, but ultimately it's a field, 100 yards long, with goalposts at the end . . ."

ChazBuckeye's picture

I found this story amusing considering their record vs that other team up north , AKA little brother isn't spectacular lately.

Some people think we’re the hunted.I don’t feel that way at all. We’re the hunter.Everybody wants an angry football team.Everybody wants a team on edge and a hungry team.If you’re a hunter, that usually equates to being hungry.
