The Land of Dance, smh.

As first reported by Bucknuts, Freshman tight end Marcus Baugh was arrested Sunday morning at 1:26 AM at 11th and High (Charlie Bear) for "offenses involving underage persons" according to Ohio State University Public Safety Records. According to police report, Baugh was arrested for underage drinking and possession of a fake ID. He will be arraigned Monday at 9 a.m.

Dumb mistake on his part. Take heed, young Buckeyes: nothing ever good transpires in the Land of Dance.

UPDATE MONDAY 10:08 A.M.: Baugh pleaded not guilty to charges. A pre-trial will be scheduled. The most likely end result is a fine and court costs.

In hindsight it's awkward. Not saying it's wrong that he did it, but now it is awkward.

What are you trying to show and/or prove by posting tweet along with "this is awkward" even if the dates between AH arrest and date of tweet are months apart?

Look closely, because the closer you think you are, the less you will actually see.

Obviously Urban needs to learn from his past mistakes and put Baugh on murder watch...

Well this is unfortunate news. I don't think the kid needs to be harshly judged though and can learn from it. Take your lumps and learn from them and you'll be just fine Marcus!

Not at all what the team needs, now or ever. Hopefully a lesson is learned from this, not just for Marcus but for all the players and he rights himself so he can have a successful career the rest of the way.

Wow a college student was out drinking while underage......I am shocked.  The only thing that would shock me more is if some hack on the Internet or ESPN turned it into a scandal that brought into question how OSU should be punished and Meyer should resign.

Underage drinking, no problem I understand. Owning a fake Government Issued Identification is a felony is it not? Was his license the Forged ID in question?

KBonay's picture

this was on the internet, so I assume it to be true.

Using a Fake ID:  You can be prosecuted for a number of different crimes for using fake identification.  Since these laws are regulated by state, every state will have its own punishments.  These penalties can run the gamut from being a simple $500 misdemeanor in some states, to being considered criminal impersonation or forgery, both felonies punishable by up to a year and a half in state prison.  If the ID is used to purchase a firearm, its a felony in every state, and can get you up to 7 years in prison.

Modifying a Real ID:  If you have also actually tampered with a real identification card, you could be charged with another crime like tampering with a public record, or altering government documents.  This punishes the act of altering or changing an officially issued piece of documentation like a driver's license, and is an even more serious felony in most states.  In New York, for example, it is punishable by up to 7 years in prison.

BME_Buckeye's picture

According to the public police report on LGHL Marcus violated the following:

  • Underage Drinking 4301.69E
  • Displaying another license of an individual 4507.30C

Both of these offenses are classified as M1 misdemeanors both which carry a max punishment of 6 months in jail and a $1,000 punish in addition to the cost of the offense.

Yet another reason why the legal drinking age should be 18 in my eyes. Why be able to go to college but not be able to drink?

Pick up your feet, turn your corners square! And DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE!!!

faux_maestro's picture

Why be able to die for your country at 18 but not be able to enjoy a beer? I think this is a better question.

I agree with faux_maestro. If you are old enough to go fight terrorists and risk death, a beer shouldn't be illegal, IMHO.

BuckeyeBoyer85's picture

While I agree with this sentiment, consuming alcohol can be extremely dangerous for young people. I find that without proper supervision on how to drink responsibly, young people make horrid decisions. The culture of binge drinking, and also rampant drinking and driving makes me think we need to have a more serious educational program than the often ridiculed D.A.R.E.. And serving your country on the battlefield requires extensive training, while drinking does not.

Wayne Woodrow Hayes

William's picture

Then why not lower the drinking age to 18? People make bad decisions when they drink, regardless of age. Also teens aren't the only people that drink and drive, and I'd wager that our higher rates of drinking and driving have much to do with our nation's dependence on automobiles.

hodge's picture

A lot of it also has to do with culture: when you make alcohol a forbidden fruit, you increase the allure of binge drinking, since it appears to be a kind of "rite of passage" into adulthood.

buckeyedude's picture

That explains why so many people smoke pot.

buckeyeboy31's picture

I'm about to turn 35 and drank irresponsibly Saturday night, who cares if you're 18 or 35?

FROMTHE18's picture

Should get put to work by Marotti and a good stern talking too by Meyer. Wouldnt be surprised if some sort of shortish suspension-like punishment resulted as well but id be willing to bet we all had a drink under the age of 21 and many of us had fake I.D.'s...just hope he learns and this doesnt become a problem

Hovenaut's picture

What's the story here going to be?

A) Marcus Baugh making a dumb mistake, like young adults do, as most of us I'm sure can relate.

B) Another Ohio State Buckeye has run afoul of the law.

C) More proof UFM has little to no control over his program, the piling on continues.

D) This is a non-story, move along people.

I think there are far worse things going on in Columbus for the cops to be worrying about underage drinking. Take his ID kick him out off the bar case closed

brandonbauer87's picture

I would agree, but we don't know the circumstances. If someone is drawing attention and making a scene you have to do something. If not every college kid would do it.

steensn's picture

Sounds like they returned him to his dorm and had he stayed we would have never heard of it. Poor decision making on his part...

lljjgg's picture

@Steensn: That's exactly how I read it, as well. They tried to have him return to his dorm and overlook it (which was possibly too lenient in its own right), and he wasn't officially arrested until he left it again (still drunk and possible disorderly).

It's an unfortunate situation, but I think people have overcome worse. Johnny Manziel went through a very similar situation prior to his Heisman-winning season, didn't he?

steensn's picture

Yes he did, BUT, he seems to be on a downward spiral as well. You can overcome it and excel, hundreds of thousands of college students do it every year. But it also can lead to self destruction...

Let he who has never consumed alcohol prior to age 21 cast the first stone.
I have never used a fake ID so technically I could cast a stone there, but I won't.
I stuck to house parties until I turned 21.
Overall, a big "whoops" on Baugh's part.  Some sprints/stairs are in order.

Class of 2010.

steensn's picture

Not a lick of alcohol until age 25, stone cast... more like a boulder. I think it is poor decision making and sets you up for massive failure. Most make it out, to many don't. Take the time to figure out whether you can handle it or not before letting it consume your most important years for setting up the rest of the life.

One Bad Buckeye's picture

I was 21 years, 0 days and 1 second old when I consumed for the first time.....my bastard friend gave me a shot of three wise men (Jack, Jim and Jose).
Not the best way to introduce yourself to the drinking world, but I turned out okay.  I stay in contact with, and maintain a very good relationship with all three of the wise men.

18 was the legal age when I came up. I feel sorry for kids growing up today. You can't have fun without getting in trouble. Laws and rules are exactly that, laws and rules. Marcus broke them, and there are consequences that must be paid. However, I can't get excited over it. My opinion is that it's no big deal.

Underage drinking- stupid, but first strike.
Using a fake id- very stupid and probably gets him suspended for sometime. Kid needs to learn a lesson, and his timing is horrible... So, he'll probably face a larger penalty than normal (see "leakgate").

Was it his California I.D.? He's only lived in Ohio for a month or two now, right?

it was a fake ID

Savage45's picture

Right, I just wondered if he has a fake Cali ID, or got a fake Ohio one, or maybe a real Ohio ID that just belongs to someone else?
Not that it matters, but I'm curious.

Brutus Forever's picture

not sure, but I would imagine it was from another state because it would be be harder to use a fake Ohio ID in Ohio, being that bouncers and cops know what legit ones look like here.

"I learned to dislike Michigan at a very young age.” – Urban F. Meyer

Jugdish's picture

It was a fake Cali ID. This is considered news on WSYX. There were probably several with the same charge but being on the FB team makes this newsworthy. This is total BS. These students need a designated taxi system and make drinking legal. It is a part of growing up and making good decisions.

Remember to get your wolverine spade or neutered. TBDBITL

BierStube's picture

I remember (somewhat) my days at tOSU.  Not sure if they still do this or not, but the bars would accept a tOSU ID instead of a license.  Would always use my roommates OSU ID and he would show up about 30 minutes later with his license.  Good times ...Good Times!

"No matter where you go, there you are." B. Banzai

OSUs12-OH's picture

I think many are not seeing that it's not the fact that he messed up and he's still a younger kid.  It's the facts that OSU players need to be making better decisions than they made in the past.  That, above all, is the point that SO many are missing on this thread and many others for that matter.  It's not the simplistic part that he's a kid who wants to drink with his buddies in college and had a fake ID.  It's more the fact that he shouldn't have been in the situation in the first place and was given a free pass at first to go home and stay there (based on the story above and elsewhere, that's my perception of it).  So for that fact, he will be under the microscope more so than if it were like Peegate or what ever else that's happened lately that's not really that BIG of a deal.  But anything post Tat-gate is going to be a big deal but apparently a 12-0 season and WOW that's all forgotten, apparently how some fans feel. Not this guy...rule with an Iron fist.
