Everett Golson, Notre Dame Starting Quarterback, Expelled from School

There's already speculation on Twitter about what led to his expulsion from Notre Dame, but that type of speculation isn't appropriate here. It's already a fascinating story developing late this evening.

While Tommy Rees and Andrew Hendrix are the two front-runners for the Notre Dame starting quarterback job, there's still true freshman signee Malik Zaire who could factor in Notre Dame's quarterback situation.

Gunner Kiel may have a heap of buyer's remorse right now.

Just logged in to post this story here. Wow.

tdible2132's picture

And I thought Eddie Vanderdoes backing out of his scholarship at ND was bad.  This is even worse for ND.  Something isn't right there.  Am I the only one who feels that things aren't quite right at ND?  Outside of the normal dysfunction of the modern day ND program that is.

rdubs's picture

These two things are totally unrelated.  There is no giant conspiracy.  If anything this is not ND's fault it is Golson's.  So they probably acted appropriately.

tdible2132's picture

Haha I didn't even think about that whole Gunner Kiel thing.  I don't think that kid had a chance regardless.  You don't decomit multiple times and then transfer for normal reasons if you ask me.  Not saying the kid has anything wrong with him or anything, just saying I don't think that's the type of guy that wins a starting job in a situation like this one.

Memorial Day weekend... It's turning into the king of college football breaking news stories.

9Route's picture

Strange. Golson & Te'o both shared the #5 jersey.

I'm just happy to be here

tdible2132's picture

I was thinking the same thing!  I know one thing for sure, not many kids will probably want that number at ND anymore lol.

cinserious's picture

Why would any of us know what number Teo and Golson wore?

Cause they are the 2 most well known players on a high profile college football team who played in the national title this past season.

Notre Dame played in the national title game last season? You could have fooled me.

Uhh, I dunno.  It's remotely possible that some of us actually watch college football every once in awhile.  Crazy talk, I know.

tdible2132's picture

Yeah good point.  I'm just glad the joke isn't on us anymore...  That was one brutal memorial day weekend two years ago..

tdible2132's picture

The word on twitter appears to be that he committed a Res Life Violation.  I'm assuming that means a residential life violation?

chicagobuckeye's picture

Yeah, res life is residential life, but I would assume he signed a student handbook with many things covered under that banner.

Taspra's picture

I'm hearing via twitter that he got caught cheating on a final.
Take it for what it's worth.

chicagobuckeye's picture

Interesting, I posted in the other thread I would have thought it would be more legally serious, but may be the case. After what I've read from past sexual misconduct issues ND seems willing to "work" with the players to get them on the right path so would have assumed they would have done the same for cheating, but next couple days will reveal it all.

Don't forget killing a student team videographer doesn't make you lose your job as a head coach, too.

steensn's picture

No kidding... What a crock. You think they're bury this one too...

ATXbucknut's picture

Exacto.  If ND is citing "federal law" as preventing them from disclosing the violation, it is probably academic in nature. Doing so would be a violation of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

rdubs's picture

Is thiis for real??

SilverBulletNYC's picture

Haha! That would be absolutely nuts!

The South will NOT rise again!

rdubs's picture

UC fans would really hate Brian Kelly then.  Although ND has a ton of QBs right now, so they have a couple other solid options.  While I doubt it will happen, it would be hilarious given the craziness that has been Gunner's career to date.

osu07asu10's picture

I don't think they really have any other "solid options"

Tommy Reese has proven to be slightly better than Bauserman
Hendrix and Zaire have little to no experience...

This is a huge blow for ND, and would have opened the door for Kiel there.

well Golden Domers I hate to say this (not really) any chance you had of making it back to the national championship game just did a Houdini

BME_Buckeye's picture

Not only that, any chance they had of making it to a bowl game might be headed out the window. Remember they have to win at least nine games and be seeded high in the BCS or else no bowl game for them.

Look closely, because the closer you think you are, the less you will actually see.

Figured the expression worked nonetheless.

But an Encino Man/Rudy "classics of the early nineties Sean Astin doublepack" sounds like pure win to me.

It's emerging that Golson was caught downloading Irish porn. Notre Dame really frowns upon that sort of thing. What a sick f(ck.

LEBRON

rdubs's picture

Apparently he is headed to Ole Miss.  At this point that university is just trolling academia.  They're either saying, you can cheat here, no big deal.  Or, our school is so easy no one needs to cheat.  Either way education loses.  On the other hand they could have a decent team here very soon.

buckeyeguy0615's picture

If Brandon Dawkins just committed to ND, what does this now mean for Kyle Allen??

tdible2132's picture

I'm not sure what the deal is, as I saw Dawkins said he wanted to commit to ND now and that they had offered him a few months back.  I"m wondering if the offer is committable, and I think the staff at ND wants to wait to see where they stand with guys like Kyle Allen before accepting a commitment from Dawkins.  That's just my take based on what I've seen on that whole situation.  Who knows, Deshone Kizer may even be higher on ND's board than Dawkins.

HolyBuckeye1093's picture

Golson kicked out of ND for academic fraud; heads to the SEC. Sounds legit.

tdible2132's picture

Haha and Ole Miss at that.  The same Ole Miss that mysteriously pulled in some big time prospects last year including the top ranked overall player.  We'll see if Ole Miss can actually amount to anything going forward, because I'm still highly doubtful.

buckeyeguy0615's picture

Where does it say he's going to Ole Miss? I'm reading he could go to UNC or Clemson. Clemson would be nice.  I know you're tired of hearing about him, but Watson would probably leave and Kitt could follow.
Dreaming..

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

That would make things really interesting if he went to Clemson

OSUinFl's picture

Can Nd deny his transfer to a Acc school Lately coaches are not allowing players to transfer to schools in certain leagues or on future schedules.

dbit's picture

Sounds like he may try to regain eligibility at ND (per his official statement)

Lastly, I want to thank the University of Notre Dame for the opportunity already granted and also the opportunity going forth to regain my eligibility in the winter of 2014.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

Over a year from now? Is he going to a JuCo until then?

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

dbit's picture

He's suspended for this upcoming Fall 2013 semester, apparently with the possibility of returning in January 2014 when Spring 2014 semester starts .

That is if ND's offer to let him return is legit. Maybe it's not.  Or maybe he doesn't want to wait.

Floyd Stahl's picture

The way the announcement is worded points to cheating on an exam or plagiarism of a paper, most likely the former.

TLB's picture

So then the question is, does academic fraud get a regular student suspended for 1 semester or totally tossed from the university?

CentralFloridaBuckeye's picture

Man, such a crazy story.  Will be interesting to see where this goes.  He's leaving, then he might be playing next year for ND, to he might be going to JuCo for the time being.  Intersting to see how this all shakes out.

OSUs12-OH's picture

I love this part: "Everett Golson has been suspended from ND for poor academic judgment."  What the hell does that mean?  Cheating?  I'm going with that one...since ND can't tell us the truth and neither can Golson (apparently).
Anyone else find this cover up, lack of truth lack of information to be a bit strange considering this is a catholic private university?  :-)  Funny huh?

tennbuckeye19's picture

I just read than an unidentified SEC team has already contacted Notre Dame about Golson. Of course he claims he'll be returning to the Irish in 2014, but still this is pretty funny, especially guessing who the SEC team might've been. It's gotta be Bielema, right?

tennbuckeye19's picture

Nah. If you read the article I linked above, it says it was not Ole Miss.

I'm surprised that ND values academics over ethics (i.e. the rape cases ignored by the school). Oh wait, nevermind.
