By Jason Priestas on April 18, 2013 at 4:31p
Damon Webb, future Buckeye

The 2014 ESPN 150 was released Thursday, with Detroit Cass Tech corner Damon Webb the only Ohio State pledge to make the list. Webb is ranked 57th with a grade of 87.

Several other Ohio State targets appear on the list, including CB Jabrill Peppers (2), QB Deshaun Watson (13), LB Raekwon McMillan (15) Glenville ATH Marshon Lattimore (51).

Michigan leads all schools with five commits appearing on the 150, but their highest-rated pledge, DT Bryan Mone, checks in at No. 72.

ESPN also published their initial class of 2014 rankings:

01. Texas
02. Florida
03. Texas A&M
04. LSU
05. Florida State
06. Michigan
07. Tennessee
08. Miami (FL)
09. Ole Miss
10. Notre Dame
11. Ohio State
12. Alabama
13. Clemson
14. USC
15. Vanderbilt

It's early, so expect plenty of fluctuation between now and signing day next February.

They have Kyle Berger ranked as the #26 OLB.

4 words: out of their minds.

Also, ESPN ranks our 2014 class #11 currently.

CincyOSU's picture

At this point that seems pretty reasonable, seeing as none of our big time targets have made their decisions yet. Regardless, I'm not too worried at this point, by signing day this will be a consensus top 5 class.

I agree. We're currently one above Bama. Texas is on top like always at this point in the year.  Keep winning those recruiting national championships, Mack.

Lol...someone down voted my comment, but not others that say the same thing? Grow up people, NOTHING I said was controversial or negative or in anyway an attempt to stir the pot.

My guess is that it was inadvertent.

This stuff is all way too early to analyze anyway, not sure why people get so hyped up about it.  The Berger thing is nuts, not sure what they're thinking on that one.  As a Michigan fan, I was also surprised to see Drake Harris not even in their Top 10 WRs - every other service has him in the Top 5.  Mildly surprised to see 3 guys ranked ahead of Hand as well, I thought he was supposed to be everyone's consensus #1 player.

I feel like ESPN's rankings are always so janked.  Go back and look at their rankings from the past and you'll find yourself thinking "who in the heck are these guys" on a lot of the guys they put on that list.  It's really early though, but I really can't comprehend how they can have the resources they have at ESPN and still put out borderline stuff like this.

Also, is Wilton Speight really that good??? I thought he was a mid level 3 star guy.  I believe his composite ranking on 247 is something in the 500's yet he's the 4th rated QB on ESPN?

Hello_Heisman's picture

Not sure, but I was even more surprised by the fact that Cornwell was ranked #24.  Michigan specifically chose to offer Speight over Cornwell.  I wonder how accurate the rankings are for both of those guys.

After looking through their list, am I the only one who noticed how down they are on Ohio guys this year?? Only 2 players made the top 150 and those guys are Marshon Lattimore and Michael Ferns.  I really disagree that Ferns is the second best player in the state but it doesn't matter anyways what these rankings say.  Just a bit comical to me that guys like Dante Booker, Kyle Berger, Marcelys Jones, and Parris Campbell Jr. got zero love.  More like negative love AKA hate.

I do not put a whole lot of stock in this list, and the UI on their top list as compared to the list on 247? It is not even comparable.  ESPN's list is pretty lame, and some of the rankings? Questionable at best.

First of all ESPN always skews to the southern schools. 2nd ESPN rankings often are off base because they skew to the south so much. 3rd it's way to early to even worry about it and 4th our class unless we have a lot of early departures (I don't see that happening with the exception of Roby & maybe Braxton) will be small so not sure we are going to have a top 5 class this year. 2015 will be a monster class for us though.

Because they wouldn't let me go for 3!

I'm fine with this. At this point in the year, 11th seems about right. Those numbers will change after this upcoming season, and whoever else comes on board. I imagine UFM will always get great classes so the end result is the only thing that matters.

there's only 1 "n" in "inaugural." not trying to be a dick, just trying to do my part, however how small.

"However how"....I'm glad you can spell but I think you might want to revisit grammar.  Not trying to be a dick either.

Rankings mean nothing. Ask Florida State

The offseason begins when your season ends. Even then there are no days off.

Two things

  • I trust Urban/OSUs staff talent evaluation more than ESPN
  • Last year this time when this came out, underrated guys like Zeke weren't on there and after reevaluating and watching film their rankings went up a lot

We were born to love Ohio State and hate that team up north.

ESPN football evaluating is total shit. They're great for basketball, but their football evaluating is just awful.

I think it's stupid for espn to put this crap out there. I know it's about money. These kids haven't  even played their senior year of football or attended the summer camps yet. So much can change.

CincyOSU's picture

Every recruiting service puts out lists this early...247, Scout, Rivals, etc. At this point every service has its flaws, although ESPN's list appears by far the most inaccurate.

I bet Mark May gets his panties in a bundle and puts his two cents (way over valued at that price). If he has any input, I'm suprised the Bucks are on the list all.
I'd much prefer OSU gets the guys Urban wants, rather that players ESPN thinks are good.
