Nebraska has its new head football coach.

Former Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule was officially named Nebraska’s new coach on Saturday morning.

Rhule replaces Scott Frost, who was fired in September after a 1-2 start to the season that included losses to Northwestern and Georgia Southern.

Rhule becomes the third current Big Ten head coach who most recently coached in the NFL before taking their current job, joining Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh and Illinois’ Bret Bielema.

While Rhule’s tenure as the Panthers’ head coach was unsuccessful, as he went just 11-27 in Carolina before his firing in October, he previously achieved success as a collegiate head coach at both Temple and Baylor. He led the Bears to an 11-3 season and a berth in the Sugar Bowl in his most recent collegiate season in 2019, while he won 10 games in each of his final two seasons at Temple.

Rhule has never previously been a full-time coach in the Big Ten but played at Penn State from 1994-97 and was a volunteer assistant for the Nittany Lions in 1998.
