I believe that we are still about 6-7 players over the 85 scholarship limit. The NCAA still isn't providing great guidance as to how to deal with older players who have an extra COVID year.
I remember reading how a company in Utah essentially used NIL to pay for school for BYU's walk-ons. Here's the story: https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/every-byu-walk-on-football-player-receives-nil-deal-from-sponsor-covering-cost-of-scholarships/
Perhaps we could go to some older players who we've stuck by through thick and thin, like a Malik Hooker or Kam Babb and say: "We're gonna make you a walk-on but we're gonna use NIL to pay for your school and expenses."
Now, the situation may work itself out anyway because some guys, even younger guys, probably will see that they're not going to start here.
Still, I think this is viable going forward in the event we end up with 87 guys who WANT to be here. I'd rather keep them here than "process" them out of the program.
