Was watching Lettermen Row's weekly video at Rooster's and Austin Ward laid out how Sevyn Banks' departure played out. I saw several articles and forum posts about him leaving but I don't think any of them detailed the events the way Austin did in the video. It's embedded below and should be set to start at the explanation. If not, skip to 29:19.
I'll try to summarize:
- Sevyn Banks made it clear in the leadup to and through the 2021 season that it would be his last.
- He ended up sustaining a significant hip injury that hampered him during the season and caused him to miss the last 3 games.
- Still, he fully intended to go to the draft after the 2021 season. He then received medical feedback regarding the severity of the injury (Ward said it was comparable to Bo Jackson's hip).
- As a result, he felt that going back to OSU would be for the best. However, by that time, the semester already started but he was not enrolled and because the coaches were consistently told that he was not going to return, they had already moved on.
- In early February, the coaches sat down with the Banks family and laid out the pathway through NCAA waivers/appeals to get back with the team and school.
- But because those are not guaranteed and neither was him getting healthy enough to play this season, Banks ended up not pursuing that and is now in the transfer portal.
- To my knowledge, he has not yet reached a decision on where to end up.
It's unfortunate that his career has been derailed this way but hopefully he is able to recover and put together a great season to get his NFL aspirations back on track.
