Looking for some historical perspective here from some of you that are a bit older than me. Being born in 1985, I know in the early 90s I didn’t hold a “macro” view of the state of the OSU football program…I was just a kid who loved the Buckeyes and hated michigan. I wanted my heroes to win the damn Game, but a lot of times it didn’t seem possible. Probably similar to how many um fans felt before last Saturday.
Now that harbaugh finally won a Game, it seems all the talk is that he’s great, they’re back, and even sometimes to the extent that he’s the superior coach/program to Ryan Day/OSU because they’re tough. Yes, mich dominated us last week, and props to them. They wanted it more and much as I hate to admit it, they deserved the win. It's honestly amazing it took them that long to have that attitude. The guy is still 1-5.
So my question is this: after Cooper finally won The Game in 1994 (after starting 0-5-1), what was the reaction regarding the outlook of the program and his tenure as coach? Media/internet weren’t what it is today, so maybe the noise wasn’t so loud. But can any out there offer recollections to what the trajectory seemed like in that moment?
Last year, after harbaugh and michigan got whooped again, some of the talk from those fans at that point was that they’d be happy if their coach ended up with a Cooper-like resume (win The Game 2 times in a decade, and maybe win a Rose Bowl). Now after one (admittedly impressive) victory over the rivals, you'd think he's about to get a lifetime contract.
Was there any talk like this around Cooper in 1994 immediately after he beat michigan for the first time? Obviously there were some great Buckeye teams in the 90s, but ultimately no one was satisfied with the Cooper years when it was all said and done.
