To often overlooked and rarely recognized, unless they miss or shank, kickers & punters. While so many other teams struggle, the Buckeye kicking game has been flawless. I haven't seen them grade out champion, not sure if they even can. Although Mirco was special teams player of the game vs Akron. Both have been unexpectedly stellar, giving a champions effort. Just wanted to give some appreciation to these guys for what they have done so far.
Jesse Mirco- 14 punts 44.1 yards per kick. Has a long of 62. Pinned the opponent inside the 20 on half of his attempts with 7. No touchbacks is a testament to his accuracy. Has not dropped/missed a snap. Hasn't had one blocked or even close to, he gets punts off quickly. This guy is a freshman, the ceiling appears to be extremely high. Most impressive stat, spent only 4 months learning American football according to his OSU bio.
Noah Ruggles- Although opportunity is limited, he is 5 for 5 on the season. 4 of which have been from 30 plus out with a long of 44. A perfect 29 for 29 on the extra point. Good for a tick under 9 points per game, ranks 2nd on the team. Has done an excellent job on kickoff with plenty of hang time, opponents only averaging 14.8 yards a return. 9 touchbacks. Seems good at forcing some fair catches. That it least gives the coverage team a chance at a fumble, instead of a free trip out to the 25. Only blemish is one kickoff has went out of bounds. All of his kicks for points have looked good, no close calls. Another gem addition from the portal.
This is the type of play you need from your specialists, especially with a defense that is still growing. Not giving up field position, and not leaving easy points on the field. These 2 key contributers deserve some recognition.
