I was looking at Dan Hope and Matt Gutridge's snap counts article after the Akron game. It seems like we have a ton of underclassman taking snaps and I wondered how typical that is (for recent Buckeye teams and across that nation). When you just count the snaps for scholarship players on offense and defense (no special teams), it breaks down like this:
| OFFENSE | Freshman/RS Fr. | 29.6% | |
| Sophomore | 19.4% | ||
| Junior | 30.9% | ||
| Senior/Grad | 20.1% | ||
| DEFENSE | Freshman/RS Fr. | 22.3% | |
| Sophomore | 34.5% | ||
| Junior | 14.0% | ||
| Senior/Grad | 29.2% | ||
| TEAM | Freshman/RS Fr. | 25.6% | |
| Sophomore | 27.7% | ||
| Junior | 21.6% | ||
| Senior/Grad | 25.1% |
We are actually more balanced than I thought, especially overall as a team, with very close to 25% of the snaps coming from each "class"/eligibility year. Probably no surprise that the defense is a little younger with almost 58% of the snaps coming from underclassmen compared to almost 49% on offense. Certainly bodes well for the future. It will be interesting to see how this plays out throughout the year.
Would be interested to know if anyone knows if this is typical or if upperclassmen typically get more snaps even with early-NFL entries and transfers.
