Not the score or stats I was expecting from Minnesota, but there is a lot to look forward to about this defense and I think a lot of people are missing some key facts. Time of possession, Minnesota: 38 mins. Our defense was out there almost twice as much as our offense. I didnt see seniority in the backfield. Some of that was a result of injuries, I know. But i get the feeling some of the DB names I heard tonight: Burke, Watts, and then after some errors, Cavazos, have much higher ceilings than the seniors I didnt see: Banks and Williamson. The linebackers looked sloppy but werent the liability i thought they could be. Watts' PI was actually a good move on his part. I think we did a pretty good job reading the receivers instead of looking for the ball in a nightime monsoon. The 4th and 1 was a fluke, and looked like it was Cavazos missing a tackle that allowed it to happen. Ok, freshman makes key mistake (a few), but then seemed to turn a corner. Take away their "big plays" like the pick saving roughing, the 4th and 1, and Strouds pick and I think the Gophers have half of those 31 points at best. We also could have very easily had three picks. Two drops that maybe go our way without rain and Gants roughing. I think we made a lot of errors that can be cleaned up before the Oregon game.
Im Impressed with This Defense. Safe Space for Combs Haters and Apologists Alike.
