THE SERIES HISTORY CRIB NOTES
  • Ohio State leads the overall series 46–7 and has outscored Minnesota 1,626-689 (31-13).
  • The Buckeyes have won 27 out of the last 28 in the series and eleven consecutive. The average score of those contests is 36-14.
  • Ohio State has won 13 consecutive games played in Minneapolis and 19 of the last 20.
  • The Buckeyes are 22–4 in games played in Minnesota.
  • When Ohio State is ranked and Minnesota is not ranked the Buckeyes are 32–2, the losses were in 2000 and 1981.
  • The only time a ranked Ohio State team lost to an unranked Gopher team in Minneapolis was 1981.
  • Minnesota has been Ohio State's first game of the season twice. Those games were in 1974 and 1973.

The only time the Buckeyes faced a ranked Minnesota team in the '00s was the national title season of 2002. Ohio State easily took care of the Gophers with a 34-3 thrashing in Ohio Stadium.

In 1996, Ohio State kept the Gophers from scoring for the fifth time in the series. The Buckeyes' first six drives of the game ended with two interceptions, a missed field goal a fumble and two punts. However, Ohio State came to life halfway thru the second quarter and scored 45-straight points.

Pepe Pearson had a game-high 123 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns.

In 1989, Ohio State trailed Minnesota 31-0 late in the second quarter. Led by Greg Frey's passing (20-31 for 362 yards and 3 TDs), the Buckeyes outscored the Gophers 41-6 the rest of the way. The 31-point comeback victory was the largest in school history.

In Wes Fesler's last season as head coach, the Buckeyes blanked Minnesota 48-0. This was the first of six shutouts for Ohio State against the Gophers.

The 27-0 loss in 1949 was the last time an Ohio State team was kept from scoring against Minnesota. Wes Fesler's 11th ranked Buckeyes were no match for Bernie Bierman's fifth ranked Gophers that Saturday afternoon.
