Ohio State's J.T. Barrett was named Wednesday as one of 30 preseason nominees for the Davey O'Brien Award, which honors college football's best quarterback.
It's no surprise Barrett was named to the award's watch list. He was a semifinalist for the award last year, when he completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 2,555 yards and 24 touchdowns and ran for 845 yards and nine touchdowns. Barrett was also a semifinalist for the award in 2014, when he completed 64.6 percent of his passes for 2,834 yards and 34 touchdowns and ran for 938 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Ohio State's only previous winner of the Davey O'Brien Award is Troy Smith, who won the award (along with the Heisman Trophy) in 2006.
Barrett was also named Wednesday as one of 47 preseason nominees for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which honors college football's best senior quarterback. No Ohio State quarterback has ever won that award.
Barrett was previously named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, which honors college football's best player, and as a nominee for the AFCA Good Works Team, which honors college football players for their commitment to community service.
