
On this day in 1969, OHIO native Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. Born in 1930, Wapakoneta native Armstrong earned his pilot's license at age 16 and attended college at Purdue University, studying aeronautical engineering. He was called away from college to serve during the Korean War and flew 78 combat missions for the United States Navy. Following the war, he finished his degree and became an aeronautical research pilot for NASA.
