The No. 1 prospect in the 2025 class, Underwood committed to LSU in January 2024 but flipped to Michigan that November. The 6-foot-4, 228-pound quarterback received a four-year NIL deal worth at least $10 million, with some outlets reporting his deal could reach $12 million with incentives.
Underwood will be the fourth true freshman quarterback to start a Michigan season opener, following Rick Leach (1975), Chad Henne (2004) and Tate Forcier (2009). He beat out Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene, who recorded 5,868 yards of offense and 42 total touchdowns the past two years, in the offseason quarterback competition.
Before earning the title of QB1, Underwood told former Michigan tight end and current Big Ten Network analyst Jake Butt he has plans to "shock the world" this fall.
"They've seen a lot of freshmen, but I feel like nobody's seen a freshman like me," Underwood said.

When asked to share his goals for the upcoming season, Underwood said his goals are to put the Wolverines in a position to win the national championship.
"Do whatever it takes to get my team to wherever they want to be, which is a national championship," Underwood said. "Of course, beating Ohio State is one of the other things as well. However I can prepare my team like that, that's what I'm gonna do."
