Are you worried about the D-Line at all?

I don't see how you CAN NOT have a problem with the D line so far. In my opinion, before the season started, I thought we had the 3rd best D line in the country. This is embarrassing, and I want to see Vrabel/Fickle to fix it.

Williams and Bennett were hurt, freshmen making adjustments out there yesterday. They have talent, still need to gain experience. I never get excited about freshmen pre-season. Even the best ones make mistakes for the first year, they're freshmen. Hank and Simon alone can do a lot, but not everything. All that matters, is they'll be ready to sack Denard 10+ times come November. Believe that.

Yeah but considering these are our "cupcake" games and our line is looking barely averagehas me concerned! Our front four just isnt harrassing the QB enough...

703Buckeye on 9 Sep 2012 - 6:34pm #

I wouldn't qualify UCF as a cupcake. They're easily better than any other OOC foe we face and better than some B1G teams we face (PSU and IU).

UCF is a cupcake compared to OSU. I dont care how much people try to hype up UCF we are clearly waaaay better than them and this game should have played out alot differently...

Miami was a cupcake compared to OSU; UCF, while not as good as OSU, is not a cupcake in comparison.

They finished 5-7 and went 3-5 in Conference USA last year lol. How are they not a cupcake? Why is everybody making them out to be more than what they are?!! You guys sound like Tressell after every game "That was a good football team!" lol UCF is below average and OSU is a top 20 team. Im not saying their Savannah State but come'on UCF should have lost by atleast 3tds!

Buckeyes125's picture
Buckeyes125 on 9 Sep 2012 - 8:15pm #

They have 17 returning starters. We went 6-7 last year. They are probably the 4th best team on our schedule. Maybe higher.

SPreston2001's picture
SPreston2001 on 9 Sep 2012 - 8:29pm #

Returning starters doesnt mean anything if all the players returning are below average lol. I just heard a analyst say this over the weekend "why do people think just because you have returning starters your going to be a better football team?" Im sorry im not drinking the kool-aid. Yes the B1G is down this year but no way is UCF beter than MSU, Nebraska, Wisc, or scUM! Do you seriously think UCF is the 4th best team on our schedule?? We went 6-7 last year because of all the off the field issues and losing our star QB and head coach lol. Not to mention we dont play in C-USA. Wow...

703Buckeye's picture
703Buckeye on 9 Sep 2012 - 8:23pm #

Of those 7 losses, 6 were by a td or less. Going by straight wins and losses is misleading. I'm not making them out to be more than they are, I am making them out to be exactly what they are a solid football team, better than at least half the teams on our 2012 schedule.

It doesnt matter look at the teams they played!! Im done lol. If you want to believe UCF is a good ball club based off them losing 6 games by a td or less then go ahead lol. Even with all the turmoil OSU went through last year we would have went 12-0 if we played that schedule...

Did you watch the game????  Their D had a lot of speed.  They weren't just another crappy conference team.  They aren't great, but they may have had the best D-Line we'll see outside of MSU.  They aren't just another Miami of Ohio or UAB, those are cupcakes.

I was AT the game!!! And like I said no their not Savannah State but we should have easily handled them by more than 15pts. Im just not willing to make excuses when it comes to my Buckeyes. We didnt play OSU football point blank.

I was at the game too, and I agree it should of been a bigger win, but UCF is not a cupcake.  I wouldn't be surprised when all is said and done they are a top 25 team this season.  The team is going to have some games like that.  If you expect this team, this season to go 12-0 and win by 30 every week, well you will be disappointed a lot this year.

I think they (UCF) may be the best team we see aside from MSU. I could be wrong - but I will definitely be paying attention to what they do the rest of the season....

This.

The talent is fine. The scheme and overall level of aggression and intensity may be the issue in my opinion.

A healthy Mike Benet will be a big help to this D line.  The question/concern is when will he be healthy.  A healthy Nate Williams would do the same, but I'm not counting on that happening.  Continued development of Spence and Washington should also help as the season goes on.

I love Fickell, but he doesn't get this figured out, he may be coaching somewhere else come next season.

I realize it's early in the season, but I'm thinking Meyer isn't going to tolerate mediocrity, especially with as much talent is on this OSU D.

Edited because, as you should know, political talk isn't allowed.

I too am worried about our defensive coaching.  I wish Heacock was still leading the defense so I could know whether to blame the obvious youth, or poor coaching.  Hopefully we find out it's just youth...

I feel the same way about Fick. Urban wont stand for a middle of the road defense at OSU. Fick better turn it up and unleash the silver bullets!

I voted yes, but my real answer is more inbetween. I would say that I am worried, but that they will figure it out.

I agree they haven't dominated as expected, but I do have hopes they'll fix things.  Plus, it seems abundantly clear that Coach Meyer wants Vrabel and Fick to fix it.  Coach Meyer even approached Vrabel during the game yesterday.

Side note, the LBs aren't exactly dominating out there either.  It seems like the DBs are still left to make a lot of tackles, and it isn't good when I see CBs hitting somebody but bouncing off because they're not wrapping up.  *sigh*

Colin's picture
Colin on 9 Sep 2012 - 12:35pm #

I said yes, but for different reasons...just bad play calling for them. After rewatching the game it seems they dropped 1 guy into coverage a lot which rarely helped. I saw Steve Miller chasing down a receiver (or runningback, whichever it was) when there were 3 DBs right there just watching the pass come. Lastly, DROPPING A 320 POUND GUY LIKE HANKINS INTO COVERAGE DOES NOTHING WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU TRY THAT!??!?!?!?!

I desperatly want more blitzes... We need to figure out this defense quick, before the MSU game. We are gonna get bitten in the a$$ and lose a game we should win if this happens.

2 sophomores starting at linebacker

3 true frosh and 2 sophomores playing snaps at DL.

DL has 2 potential starters banged up with injuries

Team is 2-0, and our defense should get better as the year goes on, barring injury.

the 2008 and 2009 recruiting classes had more misses than hits in the defensive front 7, we are seeing the results now.

keith welles, shaq rowell, willie mobley, jon newsome, jordan whiting, dorian bell, melvin fellows, adam bellamy  8 defensive front 7 prospects in 2 years, is quite the hiccup.

Where's the option for "Nope, the B1G teams suck at passing anyway, plus all the top-prized pass-rush talents are only freshmen."  I'm keeping any adversity or poor play this season in perspective.  I leave all the worrying for the team and for the coaches.  I just like lots of points and wins.  So far, the scarlet and gray are delivering there.

There is absolutely no chance to win the AP national title.  Put it out of your heads right now.  Alabama and LSU have blow-out wins over not-too-bad B1G and Pac-12 schools on national TV. USC is USC and if they win the BCS national title with 1 loss, the only other school that has a chance at the AP is the 2nd place SEC team.  Plus, the B1G sucks and blowing them all away is not going to impress anyone.

There are tons of things to worry about with the Buckeyes if you just want something to worry about.  The receivers are slow as balls, the DBs are out of position, you never hear the names of any LB's called during the games, there's no pass rush, the RB roster is thinning faster than Jeff Van Gundy's hair, and the offense is a 1-man show.  On the flip side, they have won their first two games by a combined score of 87-26.

Did you know that the only times Jim Tressel broke 30 points twice in his first two games of a season was in 2002 and 2010?!  Now, granted much of the time Jimmy was playing a major BCS-calibur opponent, but if you go back and look at some of those scores you say, wtf?!  16-13 over SDSU in game 2 of 2003?  Failed to crack 30 against Cincy or Marshall in 2004.  Had a hangover in game 3 after '05 Texas against SDSU - did not crack 30.  20-2 over Akron in game 2 of 2007?  Almost losing to Ohio in game 2 of 2008?

So, YAY POINTS!  YAY WINS!

This, although the thing that drives me crazy is that our three starting wide receivers are far from slow, Brown, Smith and Spencer were all track stars in high school.

Bucksfan's picture
Bucksfan on 9 Sep 2012 - 1:59pm #

Well, it's like they always say, there's a difference between track speed and game speed with pads.

SPreston2001's picture
SPreston2001 on 9 Sep 2012 - 6:37pm #

Exactly BUCKSFAN. Most Collegiate WR's run track but not everybody has game speed aka Teddy Ginn wheels. Teddy only ran a 4.3 on the track but NOBODY could catch him on the field.

Bucksfan's picture
Bucksfan on 9 Sep 2012 - 7:00pm #

SPreston2001, not sure what you mean.  In high school Tedd Ginn was a national champion in the 110 hurdles as a junior and had the top time in the nation when he won state the following year.  He had a bunch of other blazing times in other events, too.  "Only a 4.3" only means anything if you're talking about the 40 yard dash...which is pretty much a worthless stat because of how short it is.  Overall, he was probably the most accomplished speedster Ohio State football ever had on its roster.  It didn't necessarily translate into great receiver ability in the 2004 season or in the NFL.  But, if Smith had time and Ginn was 1-on-1, there was no one who could keep up with him 50 yards downfield.

SPreston2001's picture
SPreston2001 on 9 Sep 2012 - 10:40pm #

What im saying is track speed doesnt always translate to football speed! You can have someone who is very fast on the track and not have that speed translate to the field. Teddy only ran a 4.3 40 which is fast, but not blazing fast like a 4.2 or 4.18 would indicate but on the field he couldnt be caught. I was agreeing with what you said...

^THIS. Urban obviously knew way ahead of us that this would be an issue, hence the almost obsessive focus on recruiting monster DLine guys this past offseason. Spence/Aldophus are already showing signs of being something special and it'll just take experience. Not very worried.

The secondary, on the other hand ....

buckeye76BHop's picture

It needs fixed soon...no pressure bc they're aren't blitzing with LBs or Dline.  I can't figure it out...you're playing a team like Miami a week ago and they got one sack...???  Fickel and the guys need to get creative or OSU will struggle against B1G teams.

I'm worried about the line because Urban is.  He said he thought they would be much better and it's a problem they aren't getting pressure on the QB.  The good news is, as piss poor as the B1G appears to be, few teams on the schedule this year will be better than UCF.

I just re-watched every defensive snap and I think in every play except for 8 or so we only rushed the four linemen.     When we did blitz a LB or DB we got good presure.     We may just need to get more agressive and dial up the blitz.

I'm dissapointed but I have to go with "They will work things out." The two choices are not mutually exclusive. I believe the talent is there and once they get the right combinations of players synced up with Fickell's game plan and he gets synced up with Meyer they will be a dominant D line in the country.
