Presser Bullets: Urban Meyer Talks Navy, Nerves, J.T. Barrett, Running Backs

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer met with reporters Wednesday after practice. Here’s what you need to know about what he said:

  • Meyer won’t have a script written for Cardale Jones to come in and spell starting quarterback J.T. Barrett. “We’re not gonna do that … just be ready to go.”
  • Meyer on his pre-game message to Barrett: "That’s a great question, it’s not like in the second chapter of coaching 101. Everybody’s demeanors are different … I anticipate anxiety … Every player’s different. Tom Herman has done a really good job with J.T. It’s gonna be his first Thursday practice as a starting quarterback tomorrow."
  • Meyer said Ohio State made a decision to start preparing for Navy “day one” of training camp. “I think we have a handle on it, but I think who we’re playing is really good at it. This is one of the better ones I’ve seen over the years as far as efficiency, as far as production out of their quarterback."
  • Meyer confirmed freshman cornerback Marshon Lattimore had surgery for a pulled hamstring he first hurt back in high school: "He did pretty good during the summer ... we had some issues and then we all said, 'God doesn’t make a hamstring to be sore for five months.' He had surgery today, it’s about a three-month injury. He’ll redshirt this year and be ready for spring."
  • Meyer said he’s excited to watch his running backs play and added they’ve done everything asked of them. “Bri’onte (Dunn) and Rod (Smith) were kind of written off, we didn’t talk about them but they’re not written off anymore. They had a good training camp."
  • Meyer said he recruited Curtis Samuel to be an H-back. “He just was so productive in the spring at running back that we kept him there, we’re all anxious to see what he can do.”
  • Meyer on Navy: "You can't three-and-out against this team, that's when you've got problems."

Excited about our running backs.  Each one is at a different stage of their career with something to prove.

I am also excited about the running backs. I like what these ball carriers are bringing to the table. Nothing wrong with veterans wanting to bruise the big ten like Hyde did and young guys wanting to make a track race to the endzone everysnap. Best part is EZE looks like the best of both.

Yeah he seems to be craxy with confidence these last couple weeks. Wayyy different than when he first got here and was calling the receivers "clown shoes" or describing them as a "clown show". We have know him to speak in a way that made us think it was a coaches way of telling the players they gotta push more. But recently, with him stating he is happy with the team and that they are having the best practices that he has seen since he came to OSU...........that kinda makes me expect some big time football will be played by The Ohio State University this year...........like national title contender type of football..........like beat the pants off of Bama or anybody from the $EC.

I agree. I think it's because of a few reasons. 1. He had something major to prove to Buckeye a Nation and he didn't want to not deliver, he'd rather over deliver. 2. The team, maybe they all felt like they deserved some more hype and some credit after the beatings they got the past two years in the media from him. 3. MOST IMPORTANTLY, College a Football Playoff. It's a campaign and with their 40 some ranked schedule, if more than a couple teams go undefeated then he's going to have to campaign his way in.

I hope I'm wrong and we are just amazing this year and that's the reason! Go Bucks!

I felt the same way.  I remember the last two years he talked much diff.  He openly admitted he was worried about certain spots.  Sounds way diff this year.

I was hoping that Marshon would be able to play this year. Get well this year so you can dominate next year.

I have a feeling that Curtis Samuel would be outstanding at multiple positions for Urban.  I think we've got another Buckeye great in the making with him.

Curtis Samuel seems like a stronger, faster, shiftier version of Dontre Wilson. And I'm not degrading Wilson at all, I just think Samuel may be the most electric athlete at OSU since Ted Ginn. Get that stud in space Urban!!!! Hell, I would even be ok with Samuel taking direct snaps at QB on occasion. Just get me some sort of gimmicky play where Wilson, Samuel, and Eze are all in backfield at same time. Who cares if it only goes for 5 yards. It will at least keep Dantonio up at night (he probably doesn't sleep anyways though).

Based on what?  A sound clip or a comment?  He has yet to play a game.

No, I am not saying this because of some offhand comment Tom Herman made to a reporter about Samuel. Why don't you go ahead and check out how each of them performed at the SPARQ combine. Samuel ran a blazing 4.36 forty yard dash while Wilson posted a 4.51. Samuel also got the better of Wilson in the 20-yard shuttle and vertical jump. Now I'm no expert, but these combine tests are usually pretty good indicators of overall athleticism. We also know that Samuel came in at 196 lbs compared to Wilson's 188. I think it is obvious that Samuel is probably a little stronger given Wilson's inability to hold a block on film and given that Samuel will probably be around 205 (maybe more) after a whole year under coach Mick. I'm sure Wilson has improved his overall game a ton, but my point is that Samuel looks to be the better overall athlete. If I had to pick one, I'm taking Samuel's ridiculously high ceiling every day of the week.

As you know SPARQ scores aren't everything, if they were Mike Mitchell would have started last year.  I just think it's interesting that you would compare the 2 and pick the one you've never seen play against real competition over the one who had 400+ yards of offense as a true freshman.  I hope Samuel is that good but there are plenty of guys who people thought had potential that never saw the field.

I think it's... like his opinion man. :)

That is my best Lebowski imitation.

I will work on that.

I will not quit my day job.

I agree SPARQ scores aren't everything, that is why I used the word "seems." I'm not saying it is a proven fact that Samuel is a better play maker. As another Buckeye pointed out, this is merely my personal opinion. Wilson didn't show me much last year so I'm moving my inflated Buckeye optimism to another speedster.

I know nothing about hamstrings beyond what they are.  I don't ever recall someone having surgery to repair one though.

If we win the toss, we better not defer. We better take the ball and score. I believe that is why we had problems with ball control offenses like Iowa and Michigan State last year (of course by the end of the year our defense couldn't stop anyone). It's harder for a running team to play catch up. We can't let Navy control the tempo of the game by possessing the ball and keeping our offense off of the field. We need dictate the flow of the game.

You'd think with that transcription spelling of "demeanour" that we'd be talking a different brand of football...

Rollin, rollin, rollin, keep them doggies rollin. Might see a lot of fresh running backs all game. If O-line is half as good as last year ( and i think they will be better than that ), OSU could wear Navy out in a big way!

Curtis is suited to be the best H-Back imagine if he can learn the WR position next yr after learning the RB position this yr. He will be a Great he's already jumped the depth chart as a rb dare I say Percy harvin 2.0

GVerrilli92's picture

I'm thinking Samuel stays at RB for at least another year after this one.

He wouldn't receive any playing time at H with Jalin and Dontre around.

But just imagine next year's skill positions.. it's gonna be a little bit ridiculous.

After enduring Tresselball for so long, we finally have an explosive offense   *single tear rolls down cheek

Patrick - nice article - It is always nice to read the stories behind the scenes. Being so far away I really don't get a chance to see any local coverage from Buckeye Country since I left. Thanks for these tidbits - can't get enough.

Urban considers the mental state of the team and the timing of his comments. You can't go out and say the receivers are a bunch of clowns when everyone's a little down after Braxton's injury. That does nothing for their self confidence. It's almost a good cop/bad cop thing. The media is down on the Buckeyes' chances now so it's his job to give them some hope and build them up.
