Ohio State Names Miller, Heuerman, Bennett, and the Grants Captains

THE GRANT BROTHERS (NO RELATION) WILL SAVE US

In Urban Meyer's first press conference of the 2014 season, Ohio State's third-year coach named five captains for his team.

  • Braxton Miller, quarterback.
  • Jeff Heuerman, tight end.
  • Michael Bennett, defensive tackle.
  • Doran Grant, cornerback.
  • Curtis Grant, linebacker.

Heuerman, Bennett and Doran Grant were shoe-ins for the position. Braxton Miller is a bit of surprise, considering the quarterback is out for the season and since he'll travel in that role, he'll take up a spot on the Buckeyes' 70-man travel roster.

Curtis Grant, however, is probably the biggest surprise of all. Sometimes, it takes competition to bring out the best in people.

Not sure I agree. Miller has been a leader but this now takes up a spot on the travel roster as the article states. I also question Curtis Grant and while I'm glad he has taken a step forward I want to know how this impacts Raekwon McMillen? Will he receive any playing time this year. Which to me makes me harken back to last season when freshman should have played in place of older players who did not deserve the playing time based upon on the field results. See Vonn Bell's Orange Bowl play and wishing we could have seen that earlier in the year!

Because they wouldn't let me go for 3!

As others have stated below, there are a number of good reasons for having Miller on the sidelines, and naming him a captain is the right thing to do regardless. And who are you worried isn't going to travel because Miller is? Nobody.

More importantly, re: your question about Grant, this will not make an iota of difference in Raekwon McMillan's playing time. He will not be marginalized as Bell was last year, because Meyer will not allow that mistake to be made a second year in a row. Grant has apparently earned the nod, so let's see how he does Saturday when the whistle blows.

Good point Andy. These assumptions are made without ever seeing Raekwon play a single college game. The 5* blindness. The coaches already admitted making mistakes last year with freshman so let's hope it doesn't repeat.

I agree....I think Curtis Grant must have earned it. I also think this is Urban being the master manipulator.  He is giving Curtis Grant the confidence to succeed. It also gives Raekwon a little added motivation, he knows he must step up his game even more to see the field. All i know is UFM better not make that same mistake again. I cant see another Corey Brown out their, when the  sidelines were full of stud talent.

+1 HS
swainpm's picture

If they (freshmen) want to play then they need to earn it. If Raekwon isn't performing at the level of the guy ahead of him I'm sure he is aware of it. From all of Kwons former interviews I don't think he would have any sour grapes if he isn't outperforming Grant. UFM has been recruiting character guys who understand that nothing is handed to them, rather they need to earn it, 5* or 3*. Personally, I'd like to see our seniors all step up and develop, it would be best for the team if freshmen can't come in and outperform someone who has been in Cbus learning for 4 years.

They should have named them Generals.  Two General Grants in the back 7 for Ohio St would probably cause the SEC to pee themselves.

Not near as stupid as NOT having the leader of the offense (for the last three years and probably next year) on the sidelines for games. You do want him coaching up Barrett and Jones right? You do want him engaged in the team and coming back next year right?

oh no, some walkon 3rd stringer won't be able to travel with the team.

you are aware that NFL teams only have 53 players on their roster all season. To complain about having only 69 players available for a road game is kind of stupid. Not like all 69 players will even play let alone require 1 more.

C'mon man, Braxton is like having another coach on the sidelines, not to mention the added real-time game management experience he gets. And As squirrel points out, do we really need that extra 3rd string lineman who won't see a down?

Makes perfect sense to me.

Yes, because every player that is on the travel roster plays in every game on the road.

+2 HS
James Mee's picture

Is having 69 players that can play on the roster rather than 70 going to make a huge difference? We carried Cardale to all the games last year and I don't think he played on the road. What's the difference? If we've lost that many players we'll have bigger problems in a game. He'll be helpful to the other QB's and he is their leader. Having him there will help.

I trust the coaches as they have a proven win/loss track record.

Agreed, that was sort of my point. I feel that if they felt it would be better to have another player, then Braxton would be at home on the couch. Or probably at the WHAC. It's nicer than my house. Or most houses I've been to.

This is why they need -10 to go further.  You really want a the Leader of the football team the last few years not to be with the team?  Thats a good way to make the Coaching staff and the OSU program look like SCUM.

buckeyeboy31's picture

Let me reiterate here.....I am 100% in support of Braxton traveling with the team, that will be immeasurable to the team.  My beef is the fact that the NCAA or whoever makes him take up a spot of the 70 when it is evident to everyone that he won't be playing this season.  And I realize 69/70 players doesn't make much of a difference, it's just a stupid rule that a player lost for the year counts against it.  Poor wording on my part haha

fear_the_nut70's picture

I knew Braxton would be a captian.  Just how UFM rolls.  Curtis Grant surprised me.  Captains have to be able to lead in part by their play.  I hope this is an indicaiton that Grant is taking a huge step forward this year.  Last year, he proved to be a good blitzer and was solid against the run, but still looked lost on pass coverage.  He fixes this (i.e. reads the play quicker), and no joke, he has a shot at being an All American.  If not, well, it will be more of the Curtis Grant we have seen the last few years, and it's hard to be an effective captain from the bench.  Me, I am pulling something fierce for the kid.

I believe Ash is smart enough tailor this defense to the players strengths. If you put players in a position to succeed then they will succeed. I think the last couple years the defensive plays were called "scared." I think those days are over. They are going to attack rather than try to disrupt.

so Curtis will be the ultimate answer to "was it the bad style of play last year or Grants unability to play mlb"

I think Curtis could be great in an aggressive style like this new one with Ash. He just didn't fit into the soft zone, cover a whole area style of play they have used the last two years. That fit Shaziers style much better, which is why I thought Shazier should have been the mlb all last year, even though he isn't one.

With this new defensive scheme, we will see how good Curtis really is or how soon it takes for Raekwon to take over.

Why are people complaining about braxton traveling? He's head and shoulders the leader and model athlete of this program? Remember when he was busy putting in work on a Friday night with at least 1 teammate? Coaches wish every player were like that. The kid gets it and I think he'll be invaluable in State College, East Lansing, and everywhere else being in JT and everybody's ear when they need a solid guy to hear good advice from that isn't a coach.

Also, I dont think Urban Meyer names players captains without those players completely earning that title. If he wasn't deserving of a captain's spot, he would not have been given the title, IMO. After Miller, Heuer, Bennett, and Grant, all fairly obvious choices, that's 2 per side of the ball. For the 5th, he could have went offense or defense and there were other senior starters on offense as well.

I think Braxton is essential to be a captain and to be traveling with the team.  He has a unique perspective and can help the QB as basically another coach.

Yeah, I agree.  While he was rehabbing, he supposedly was bustin' his but watching video.  I have read that he knows the offense so well, he could have called the plays (they were going to give him almost carte blanche on audibles).  Having him travel with the team is almost like having another coach at this point, very important for a young QB.  I would also think his selflessness would be an inspiration as well.  I can't understand why anyone would object to this.

whiskeyjuice's picture

I have no idea why people are complaining about Braxton Traveling. I think it's a positive thing to have him with the team. After all, he is a team captain.

To all the Curtis Grant doubters, Urban Meyer is not just going to just approve a Captain position for someone who hasn't earned it. Grant may not have lived up to the hype he came in with, but he hasn't had a terrible career either. Obviously he has done enough to convince his team-mates and coaches that he is a leader. The accountability that comes with that distinction will be enough to push Mr. Grant from good to great this season, mark it down.

Kwon will play, but Grant will lead.

I would even put Braxton up in the booth for a part of each game with Herman to give him a different perspective of opposing defenses. That way he can see why Herman calls the plays he does and be able to see things you wouldn't see at field level. Watching something from that perspective on tape is different from seeing it live.

Being on the sideline for the year will help him get better. Mental reps are better than no reps. With another year to mature and understand the game, he is going to punish fools when he comes back next year.

I am D-Day0043 and I approve this message.
