Urban Meyer and Company Bring the Juice in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

By DJ Byrnes on August 15, 2014 at 1:35p

You may have seen the newest fad sweeping the internet: celebrities (and not-celebrities) dumping buckets of ice water on themselves in order to raise awareness of ALS. The cycle is complete by the performer calling somebody else out to take the challenge.

What is ALS? From ALS.org:

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually lead to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.

Urban Meyer demands his players bring the juice in everything they do. So when 2015 commit Joe Burrow called Urban to the plate, it's no surprise Urban dropped the mic:

They did it! Proud of you Urb and Shells. Looks like they nominated @kingjames and Chris Spielman! #icebucketchallenge

King James and Chris Spielman, eh? Not a bad shot to call, Urban.

And for the record, let it be known Dontre Wilson and Tyvis Powell (and the basketball team) are no fans of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis:

@switz03 i told u i got you brother ahaha ! @tpthedb23you got 24 hours my boy

I give the people what they want @runliketre !@cantguardmike & @jalinmarshall7 yall up next!

Is this like wearing pink? How about a "I just made a donation of x dollars to ALS research and I am calling out __ to do the same." I don't get how dumping ice on my head helps. Am I missing something? Sorry for being a party pooper.

The former would not have the viral appeal that the ice bucket videos have.

You must endure the ice bucket challenge to be able to challenge the next person, is how I understand it.

Normally I think people who do the challenge do make a donation, likely not college sophomores though. Them participating just helps raise awareness, and hopefully drum up donations from other people. Getting your cause out and in the publics eye is the point.

If you complete the ice challenge, you donate $10.  If you forego the ice challenge, you pay $100.  Yup, you are missing pop culture.  :)

You know Coach Coombs started yelling about getting water right after the bucket was empty.

Shells got the worst of it by far.  I guess cold flows downstream as well.

Love it! UFM runs a nice little program, bunch of good dudes. No wonder FLA is so salty he left...

Somebody please call out coach coombs. You know he'll probably not be satisfied with just a bucket and maybe he'll ask for a Barrel of ice !!!

The water would be afraid to come out on Coombs!

The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced

I'm thinking if they wait too long before soaking him, the ice & water may turn into water-vapor by the energy radiated as heat from coach coombs !!!

God it's so funny how these athletes think they are going to take the ice water like real men but wind up yelping like a little girls.

First and goal at the five and Arch is getting the ball.

Great cause. My best friend died from ALS a few years ago. I always give whatever I can to them, which reminds me that I don't think I have this year. Gets me kinda choked up now thinking about it. He left behind an amazing wife and two awesome little kids.

It's definitely a tough disease to see someone you love suffer through. I encourage anyone who can give if you can.

I remember hearing a few years ago that Northwestern found a possible cause of the disease but haven't read up on it lately. Some props to the B1G there.

You know how people say that the anticipation of something is worse than the thing itself? In this case, not so much...

Nice to see such a response to a worthy cause. Looking forward to seeing Spiels and LBJ answer the challenge.

As a physical therapy student, I treated a patient with ALS. It is a horrible illness, and progressively gets worse and worse. The person gradually becomes paralyzed and then his or her respiratory muscles eventually quit, and they die from suffocation.  It is very challenging trying to be an encouragement to them knowing they will get progressively worse as time goes on.  With all this devastation, we must never cease in battling ALS.

What a great cause to give to. Hopeful and praying that we will beat ALS!

The ALS walk is coming up in September at the Columbus Commons.  Come and support someone.  I will walk for a friend, Gary Ellis that was diagnosed in January of 2013.  I also walk for Karl Majoy, diagnosed about the same time.  Both friends are frozen in a Capt. Pike like state (think old Start Trek). Prior writers can't describe how fast this disease moves nor how debilitating it becomes.

Basking in the wake of mediocrity.....
