Ohio State will play home games against UNLV in 2017 and Oregon State in 2018 after the school canceled its series with North Carolina earlier Wednesday.

Here’s the announcement via team spokesman Jerry Emig:

The Buckeyes are set to play the Rebels Sept. 23, 2017 and the Beavers Sept. 1 a year later. Ohio State also pushed its series against Boston College back to 2023 and 2024. It was originally scheduled for 2020 and 2021.

Terrible adds(mostly UNLV, Oregon St isn't terrible). Bite the bullet and play a team like Bama in Chicago and call it a day. Then tell the Big Ten if they want to keep up to give us more money or go back to 8 conference games so we aren't screwed out of home dates.

We upgraded one of the matchups, downgraded the other, but both games are at home. From a business standpoint, it's a win.

However, I wish they didn't rush to fill the 2017 slot with UNLV. They have plenty of time to come up with a better option than that.

So...can we not schedule an almighty SEC team because they are afraid of us or are we (as in Gene) afraid of them? Seems like there could be a quick fix to this "osu doesnt play anyone" nonsense, but we never seem to get/take the opportunity to fix it.

Well said.  This will be taken by the media haters as "Buckeyes dodge a decent opponent and pick up a basketball team and a lower Tier PAC 12 team".  No other way to look at it from many points of view.   And really....just typing the words...."is an SEC team afraid of us"...sent laughter everywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Except maybe Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and now even Florida..

Vanderbilt is a train wreck, yes.  KU......give you that.

Tennessee, Miss St and Florida would not fear this Buckeye team for a second.  Yes, Meyer is the new sheriff in town, but the Buckeyes have one, now vacated win vs. the SEC, since Nixon was in office.  Trust me, they wouldn't be shaking in their boots over the prospects of playing us.

There is still an opening for 2017 & 2018 for a non conference game - according to the athletic site.

As it stands now, Ohio State is back to 6 home games for 2017. The remaining open slot will either be another home game, all three non conf games that year are home due to 5 conf road games, or it could be a neutral site game w/ a big gate. I doubt it's the latter because Ohio State is already playing Oklahoma - which should be a top tier game - so my guess is we get another MAC school for 2017. Oklahoma, UNLV & MAC - all home conf games that year + 4 BIG conf home games gets OSU to the magic # of 7.

As for 2018 - the non conf slate is @TCU, Oregon State & TBD. OSU has 5 home conf games so they are at 6 home games and the same scenario would apply as above - the open date game will either be a marquee neutral site game w/ a big gate or a home game against a MAC school type opponent looking for a paycheck.

The fact the BC series is moved back lends me to think the much talked about/anticipated neutral site game will be in 2019. OSU has a soft non conf schedule w/ home games against Cincy & TCU but only 4 home conf games. Unless they want another pancake - I think a two year two game series at a neutral site starts that year, week 1 is open, and OSU scores a big name SEC or ND down in Dallas. I think that gate/and broadcast deal would cover the missed home game.

2020 would see 5 home Big Ten games, 2 home non conf games and a neutral site - 7 home games plus the big neutral site game makes for a lot of $$$.

On a side note, this 9 game conf schedule is a big mess.

If scheduling was close to half as easy as some of you write.....Everyone in Buckeye Nation loves Woody Hayes and Hayes loved to have ONE tough game per year only and that was the game against TTUN. I'll bet that a lot of you are glad that Woody isn't doing the scheduling. Besides, you never know how good or bad a team is going to be. It is possible for a (6-7) team to go (12-0) the next year, right?

OSU played 2 major opponents OOC when Hayes coached.  Most of the time it was 2 Majors, OOC & the Big 10 schedule w/ no minor teams.

+2 HS
CGroverL's picture

I picked 3 years out of the blue...1961,1967, and 1974.

In 1961, Ohio State's toughest game was #9 ranked Iowa...even TTUN wasn't ranked. In 1967, Ohio State again has no tough teams on the schedule except for when they played in the Big Ten against a #2 ranked Purdue. In 1974, the schedule had no good teams on the schedule until TTUN and the following Rose Bowl against USC. I just picked 3 seasons off of the top of my head...do some research instead of thinking I'm so wrong. I love Woody, but to Woody, he meant it when he said things like "if we lose every game but beat TTUN, that qualifies as a winning season. I'll check other years if you wish (by random) to show you how Woody liked the schedule to be. I'm sorry that your thoughts were incorrect, but I don't deserve any down votes for saying something, putting a name to the person who heard Woody mention wanting to play scrubs all year until M*ch*gan came around and then finding proof of having weak schedules during 3 of Woody's season by taking 3 wild guesses. I didn't just get lucky by picking 3 years and I was born in 1973. I brought up no seasons that I can remember as I was 1 year old when the 1974 season started.

Go ahead and down vote me for reading something that I thought to be true, telling 11W about it in a comment and being at minus 2HS afterwards. Now I have proven it in my opinion and I've done 30 minutes of research and written a bunch of truth that people don't like. I first heard about Hayes not wanting to play "tough" games by watching a bio of him on TV. Good luck, and Go Buckeyes!

"I hope they're last in everything"

Thanks, Urb!

Here is some research..

OSU played 12 teams ranked in the top 20 in the Hayes OOC era. Pretty impressive since many of the years OSU could only schedule 2 OOC games. His last four years they played 6 teams in the OOC ranked in the top 13 (Name a team that does that in the present era of college football).

OSU played Penn State 5 times, USC 4, UCLA 4, Cal 4, Oregon, 4. Also had home and homes with Stanford, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Nebraska.

Good point on Woody not wanting tough OOC games though and I'm sorry that your thoughts were incorrect.

1961 ohio state played TCU of the Southwest conference (a major conference at that time), UCLA who won the Pac10 Title and Oregon also of the PAC10

1967 OSU played Arizona and Oregon on the road

1973 OSU played TCU and Wash St

the only non-major conference teams Woody ever played in his tenure are as follows

1953 on the road against U of Penn, back when the Ivy was still considered a D1A level conference and 1967 Arizona at home who was in the WAC at the time,,,and thats it,

every other team he played in his 20+ years was from a major conference. Can Bear Bryant say that? i think not,

In his tenure they played the following schools who were not Major conference teams at the time - Southern Miss 6 times, Louisville 2 times in 76 and 77 when they were a low level Independent, Furman 2 times, Memphis 2 times, Tenn Chattanooga, Richmond, Tulsa, Wichita St, Akansas St and UC when they were a low level Independent in 1982. Thats 18 such games vs 2, and i am not even counting playing someone like Miami FL in the 60's when they were a low level independent as well,

18 vs 2!!!

You know, the SEC is playing this pretty smart. Teams from conferences going to 9 conference games may soften up the non conf, thus leading to the SEC saying, "Well we had to go to 9 conference games because no other quality opponents were willing to play us."

I don't mind going to 9 B1G games, but if they do, they need to lock in Wisconsin for every single season. Here's hoping that they add a decent team to the non-con schedule to pair with UNLV and Oklahoma, b/c otherwise...

Also, let us all hope that the TCU, Oregon, and UT games don't go by the wayside. As someone brought up, this is probably the cost of adding that 9th conference game - the years where you only get 4 B1G games at home, you can't afford road games in the nonconference.

Oregon St is maybe a slight bump up from UNC, they have a better winning pct in the last decade than UNC (even adding back in UNCs vacated wins) but in the last 5 years UNC has been better so to a large degree a wash, no doubt UNLV is a step down, but was obviously put on the schedule for the home game without the return commitment, ie money driven.

UNC was likely unwilling to play osu at home and give up the return to Chapel Hill, so they got dropped.

I too long for better schedules but as long as no more than 1 MAC team and zero 1AA teams would be an improvement..

Seems a discussion of schedule strength is meant to bolster the image of teams that are not in the SEC, to paint them as worthy of the playoff or the bigger bowl games. SEC teams seem to get a pass, as they are thought to be automatically worthy.  To me, this thinking is invalid and troublesome.
