There had been some rumblings around offensive lineman Tommy Brown's status with the Ohio State football team, and it appears there was some fire to the smoke.

As first reported by The Akron Beacon-Journal's George Thomas, Brown has transferred to Akron, his hometown university. Eleven Warriors was able to independently confirm Thomas' report.

Brown, a product of Akron's Firestone High School, is a former three-star recruit and member of Ohio State's 2011 recruiting class.

According to his official Ohio State bio, Brown earned his first Varsity letter last year, playing in 208 plays scattered across all 14 games.

May be a contributing factor to the transfer...the incoming competition, I mean.

Best of luck to Tommy...he's now a BuckZip!

Best of luck at Akron.  The Zips are welcoming OSU transfers at a pretty good pace these days.  Hope it translates into W's up there.

What's that class down to now? 16/24 still at OSU?

Our honor defend, we will fight to the end !

If you can't win your conference, just quietly accept your non-playoff bowl game.

15/23, I believe. 16/24 if you count Cardale in 2011 instead of 2012.

I don't think he was in that class. I believe he was 2013

Best of luck to him. Akron is going to be something special with Terry Bowden at the healm. I believe Brown was a redshirt Jr. That gives Urban another scholly to play with. Would not be surprised to see this class around 22.

Good luck Mr. Brown.

Good luck in the MAC. Still hope BG wins the league, but with Akron becoming the Buckeyes Northeast, I hope they all do well.

These kind of transfers don't make much sense. If I were in his shoes I would value the degree from OSU over the one from Akron. It's not like playing one year at Akron is going to make him an NFL prospect.

Not saying this will be Tommy Brown's major, but check out Akron's corrosion studies program. Graduates start near six figures.

Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

Probably not - However, I'm sure this young man loves football and just wants to play. He probably realizes that he won't be playing on Sundays. Why not transfer and make the most of what's left of your eligibility. In terms of the degree - I would imagine that he could transfer hours back over to OSU to graduate.

Regardless, best wishes to this young man. I hope he finds what he's looking for in Akron.

Not sure why this was downvoted. Anyone who is objective about this knows that OSU is a better school than Akron.

I really think that more student athletes should use their athletic ability to get into better schools. There are probably a number of football players at OSU who will never play meaningful minutes on the field and would be better off transferring to the Ivy League. They may not be able to normally but the football coach could get them in. They could get a degree from an elite university and actually get in the football games. Playing in the games is what is the most fun. I can't imagine spending 4 or 5 years just training to get into a game.

Born a Buckeye, played as a Buckeye in all 14 games of last season....ALWAYS a Buckeye. Rip 'em up in Akron, Mr. Tommy Brown. Brothers are brothers always. You paid your dues. Good luck in the future and don't forget too root on your Buckeye family when you aren't in front of your new family. Go Buckeyes!

Thanks, Urb!

OSU is a great academic institution. But to say that " OSU is a better school than Akron" across the board ? Not so fast, as Lee Corso would say. As a leader at a top tire company, I can tell you that Akron's school of Polymer Science is tops, and we have a pipeline of chemists and engineers from there. Fantastic program. Plus, who knows how home plays into the picture?  See Mike Mitchell at Texas A&M
