Cardale Jones Officially Named Backup Quarterback

In the follow-up scrum to Urban's presser at Big Ten media days, the burning question of who will replace the Smooth Sensation was answered. Cardale Jones has risen above J.T. Barrett and Stephen Collier to secure the spot.

With Braxton Miller's injury history, the odds are good Cardale could see action this fall. The 6'5" 250 lbs three-star recruit from Glenville threw only two passes in the 2013 campaign (completing one, for three yards).

It's been a long road (and maturation process) for Cardale, but it looks like his labors are finally yielding dividends.

Good for him, glad he stuck it out. Hopefully the next Kenny G?

I don't think that he's got the same wiring as KG, so I don't think he's likely to ever compare well.  I do think that if his receiver had caught his long throw early in the spring game, there would've been a lot more O-wow, which would've gone a long way to building confidence, his and the public's.  I also think that the guy has huge potential, especially when stepping on the field to take over as leader.  If he can get that about himself developed, he should make huge contributions this season.

Well, I stand up next to a mountain ... and I chop it down with the edge of my hand.

Those are big, smooth shoes to fill. I haven't seen enough him to know any better, but if Urban says he's number 2, then he's number 2.

I can't say anything about their smoothness but I guarantee he has some big ass feet to fill those shoes

Lost in the hoopla about how cardale didn't come to play school is the fact that he actually had over a 3.0 GPA. Not only has he turned the corner on the football field but he's also done so on his twitter:

Now we must ask if the GPA was because he changed his attitude, or if it is a reflection of the system of academics surrounding athletes?

Actually at the time he tweeted about not coming to play school, he had a 3.0 GPA. It just got lost during the firestorm of that tweet. I really think he was just having one of those stressful moments and that tweet was just a horrible lapse in judgement that will live on and on.

I think some people just have a difficult time understanding tongue in cheek comments.  The "playing school" comment was obviously a joke, that was taken completely out of context.  It's the way of the internet...

chirobuck's picture

I saw him play in hs and didn't think he was deserving of an offer but I defer to the coaches, if he has progressed to the point of being ready to play for a national championship contender than so be it and I'm glad he proved me wrong.....but until I see him play I can't help but remain a little skeptical.......either way I will enjoy watching him truck some LB tying to tackle him lol

Let me offer this video as evidence to the contrary...(for those impatient types, Cardale unleashes a 55+ yd bomb from the pocket first highlight)

Completely agree, I would think anyone who followed him in high school (myself included) would not be surprised by this news.

There is a stiff arm at like the 8:40 mark that was just nasty.

Much different running package than Braxton Miller... I believe Cardale is around 250 lbs.

Good for him.  That is a big deal.  One play away from being the QB for one of the top teams in college football.  I am excited to see what he and some of the other young QBs can do.

I thought for sure he was only a 2 star or was that Malcolm Jenkins...

His size reminds me of TPryor. Deff not his feet. But he does have a strong arm and can move alittle. with more experiance, hopefully he progresses into a realiable backup. Deff not like good ole Joe bauserman

Congratulations to Cardale.  But I have to say it's disappointing not to see JT Barrett take the reigns.  Sure there is time for him to reach his potential, but it would have been nice to see Hermans select QB develop a little quicker.

Keep in mind JT Barrett is still only a RS Freshman. Some players just need a little more time to develop.

Have to agree...I was hoping JT would take the reigns and maybe he will. I have to say I'm a little nervous about the position when Braxton leaves. We've had a number of qb misses in recruiting and I find this odd considering who our coach is.

Now i'm awaiting Rod Smith to be named the starting RB.

All of  our qb's other than Miller are "unknowns". I am surprised Urban would actually say who was the #2...unless he is trying to light a fire under the others. Given the talent we have in the wana-bees  I can't imagine any of them would be willing to watch the games from the sidelines.

this doesnt speak much about JT. im bot worried about his progression just yet RS FR. plus injured that whole time wasnt he? Next year someone must step up if we want to think to talk about getting near a NC. but we still have a long ways to go until we need to start worrying about after Braxton for now Congrats to Cardale Jones work to keep that spot youngin

This is surprising if true. Having said that, I seriously doubt Meyer's sincerity here. He has a track record of saying things to the media that he thinks will motivate a player, even if it is completely false.

Whomever does win the backup position will be deserving; I have no doubts about that. But this competition is certainly not over. That is an absurd statement.

I think that if there had been another set to choose from, I dont believe he would be backup, however, as we've seen the cupboard, you set the table with what you have.  Heres to hoping he can fill KGs shoes.

If we indeed are going to spread the wealth around then I have no reservations about Cardale. However, if we start relying on Brax's legs too much then I think we may have trouble if Brax goes down with an injury. The young OL scares me a little, so hopefully there will be a lot of quick hitters in the repertoire.

I'm happy for Cordale. He does have a cannon for an arm. I don't know how accurate he is so we will just have to wait and see. Does this set him up to be the starter for 2015 if he does well in his stints? That's probably a long way off though.

Saw him run a few times last year. He looked like he was pulling a wagon. I mentioned it in a post and was down voted like 17 times for stating my opinion. anyway his arm looks powerful and his reads looked pretty good. He probably doesn't have B Millers speed but probably doesn't need it. I believe we have a good group of QB's and actually think Cardale will do some impressive things.

A man amongst boys. Just needs reps. Cardale learned alot from K.G. An all-in work ethic to be the best you can be when your number is called. Cardale is naturally more talented and will do us proud moving forward. No worries.

this doesn't surprise me at all. cardale ia a beast of a qb with an arm that is as strong or stronger than any qb in college or the pro's.

i won't be surprised if he throw for 4,000+, and a huge amount of touchdowns, when he takes over for braxton next year.
