Ryan Shazier Has a 42" Vertical Leap

Ryan Shazier wowed NFL teams when he showed up to the combine with an extra 20 pounds of muscle. The former Ohio State great is also killing the workout stage, posting a 42" vertical leap and a 10'10" broad jump. His vertical is the best measured so far at the 2014 combine.

So yes, we now live in an age where a 237 lbs linebacker with a dinged up hamstring is capable of leaping 42". (For comparison's sake, Calvin Johnson's vertical leap is 42.5 inches.)

I guess his leaping abilities should have never been in doubt; although I don't remember Montee Ball exploding into a ball of flame, but whatever:

Should be no surprise that he would be freakish in the combine events.  With the added weight is a bonus.  He might find himself going early 2nd round.

Whoa! Calvin Johnson is taller by the way. So for shazier to jump that high is nothing short of amazing.

Vertical takes into account the athletes height.

They subtract your height from the jump.  Still an outstanding number for an OLB.

Too bad they cant subtract the extra 20 for the vertical.  Imagine the lost inch or two due to the weight change.

I might be wrong, but I believe that the vertical leap is measured from the participant's standing reach - so the player's height doesn't really make much of a difference.  Calvin's 42 inch vertical would technically be higher in the air than Shaizer's because Johnson is taller.

A vertical Leap is measuring how high you can jump off the ground from a two foot set position.  Whether you are Manute Bol or Spud Webb, 42 inches is 42 inches no matter how tall you are.

Has anyone played against Shazier at JO or the RPAC? I bet his dunking skills are crazy

Mortc15's picture

All the receivers, and backs have performed and RDS has the highest vertical of the combine so far. THAT is impressive. What a truly great athlete. He's going to be a great player for whatever team drafts him.

I don't see how Shazier makes it out of the 1st round and I've always felt that way. To me, he's the best player / prospect out of the all of the draftable OSU players.

Out of all the guys that left after this season RDS will be missed the most.  I just loved watching that guy play foozball.

I did too. Can't forget Hyde though. Just watched his senior highlight video AGAIN last night. Gonna miss watching him suit up for the Buckeyes.

You got to watch him suit up? Creepy. (sorry, couldn't resist)

He should easily run in the 4.4s.

In regard to the video: Joe Tessitore sucked at announcing Friday night fights. He's even worse at football. I about want to puke every time I hear his voice. Always with his "what does this mean for Ohio State and the B1G" for every incomplete pass.

As for the subject: I forgot Shazier had an issue with his hammy. I was looking all over for the hairless one and was disappointedThat I didnt see him get to showoff more, but someone will get a hell of a lb in May when they draft him.

Buckeye5000's picture

I agree about Tessitore. The way he went on and on about Ball getting the record before that play made it even more satisfying when RDS and the Bucks stopped him from getting the record against us. He was so fired up for Ball to get the record it seemed Joe Testicules was going to bust a nut in his own pants if Ball had scored.

Go Bucks!

could be wrong, but I believe he may be waiting to run at OSU's pro day

This, didn't want to run with the hamstring I read.

He also led all linebackers with a 130.0 inch broad jump, and was near the top with 25 reps on the bench.

He's the total package and if he runs in the 4.4-4.5 range he'll be a top 15 pick no doubt - maybe top 10.

RedStorm45's picture

I sincerely doubt that, considering he's barely a top 5 LB prospect on most boards.  A great combine effort still does not help his film where he sometimes struggled getting off blocks.

I wonder how his shuttle and 3 cone were, as he was a beast going sideline to sideline.

+3 HS
PittBuckeye's picture

Common sense would agree with you, yet every year guys shoot up the draft board for putting up these types of #'s. I'm not saying I think he'll go top 15, but at the same time I really wouldn't be surprised if he did.

Teams tend to forget film sometimes when they see a new shiny toy putting up big shiny #'s.

+2 HS
RedStorm45's picture

He didn't run, so we'll see how the rest of his drills pan out on 3/7 if he does them at the WHAC.

Just hope it's not a Vernon Gholston kind of thing for him.

BuckeyeJ's picture

I wonder if he could play a DB or a corner?

+1 HS
Buckeye5000's picture

What? Or didn't I get the joke? Because you must have been joking if you think RDS can play corner.

Go Bucks!

vitaminB's picture

He also had the best time on the 3 cone, which is more of a predictor of success than the 40.

RedStorm45's picture

False.

Tyler Starr, South Dakota: 6.64 seconds
Trent Murphy, Stanford: 6.78
Anthony Barr, UCLA: 6.82
Jordan Tripp, Montana: 6.89
Ryan Shazier, Ohio State: 6.91

Brandon26841's picture

It doesn't make sense that Shazier ran the 3-cone drill if his hamstring was actually bothering him. I can see doing a broad jump / vert with a bad hammy, but hell... doing the 3-cone would probably aggravate it worse than anything. He did the 20-yard short shuttle too. I guess he was just wanting to wait to run on that fast OSU track.

He would have either been close or had the fastest LB 40 time there (4.51).

RedStorm45's picture

Yeah, I don't get that.  Maybe Hyde pulling his hammy scared him out of the 40.

I can't be the only person whose first reaction to this story is, "What a pity that he is going to the NFL; I'd like to watch him for another season in college football..."

I am not an NFL-watcher.  Most of these terrific collegians are history to me after they leave school.

I'm genuinely sad that he made the decision to enter the draft.
