How do we Feel about this Class Now?!?

So, with eight players on board, things are happening on the recruiting front. There have been 6 commits starting with Burrow at QB less that three weeks ago. Of those 6 new commits, 4 are from Ohio, and one was Nick Conner.

They even have some momentum with guys like Justin Hilliard, Jashon Cornell, Damien Harris, and several other 4-5 star elite recruits. So, things are really starting to take shape. This could, COULD be a top 5 class by the time that this season kicks off!

So, now that this has all happened, where are all those "fans" who were b*tching and moaning about the state of OSU recruiting, especially the in-state recruiting?

I'll make this really easy for you - either trust the staff, and enjoy the ride, or don't follow recruiting, because we're talking about the whims ad wishes of 17 and 18 year old high schoolers.

CHILL!

So, what's the level of excitement here? How is everyone else feeling? Things are looking up for the 2015 class, and 2016 is even starting to stir up some positive energy. This class with 8 recruits is on the fringe of the top 25 already. OSU is in a very good position with Hilliard, Baker, Scott, Harris, Jefferson, Burrell, Clark, Cornell, and Kirk.

I feel pretty good about their chances with everyone except Clark and Kirk, but what do I know? Just a gut feeling that they land at least 5 of the above guys and that alone makes for quite an impressive class if it just ended with that and their current commitments.

Thoughts?!?

Not to be a complete jerk here, but what are the "naysayers" supposed to say? "Damn, we got another recruit, now I have nothing to bitch about?"

Umm, yes.

LOL. Sorry, just was looking for a way to joyfully spike the ball with all of this momentum after all of the negativity that people were putting out there. Sometimes recruiting is simply a waiting game, and some days, things just go really well.

Assessing a recruiting class on star rankings is a bit dumb, as they should grade the class by the sum or average of the athletes' national position rankings, through a ranking service like 247sports.  The college program who's recruiting class has the lowest number wins, or if you want to, sum up all of the recruits national position rankings for a college and take the average (lowest average wins).  Problem with college class ratings are that specialists (kickers-punters-snappers) don't fall into the traditional five star program like 247sports.

I was nervous about Urban recruiting gameplan, but far from scared. I knew the recruits were coming. This is Ohio State! We don't struggle in recruiting. Stare at the stadium long enough and you're ready to play in there. In Urban we trust! Never worried!

Because someone comments on the lack of verbals, or doesn't get overly excited when a specific player commits doesn't mean they're "naysayers". Are there naysayers on here? Absolutely… but they're few and far between. Are there sunshine pumpers on here who think Coach Meyer is going to cure cancer in his spare time and that Luke Fickell should be canonized because of his program loyalty? Yes… and there are more of the latter than the former in my opinion. I try to stay in the middle. I don't usually comment negatively on a recruit by name, but I also don't pretend that everything the staff does is beyond questioning. I commented, along with many others, about the staff's refusal to offer Nick Conner (until yesterday). I thought those of us questioning why Conner was being slow played were fair and respectful… but we were often times labeled 'negative' or 'arrogant' in thinking we know more than Urban Meyer. No one on here could possibly be so stupid as to think he knows more than Coach Meyer. Sometimes, however, people have opinions different from those of the staff and should feel free to express those opinions without the name calling and down voting that almost certainly follows. That's part of what this site is; a community for all who love Ohio State to gather and debate. Let people have their opinions. Disagree if you like, but do so respectfully and constructively.

I don't disagree necessarily. It has just been amusing to watch because so many people were so upset about how the class looked with over half a year(!) remaining before NSD. There are highs and lowsto be sure. However, life is about relishing the highs and enjoying them, while being mature enough to not dwell on the lows. Instead, look at the lows as a time to be joyful that, at some point, you got to enjoy the highs, and that such times will return again. Being an Ohio State fan is the same way. We all love the Buckeyes in our own way. Let's just try to enjoy the highs, and look at the lows as constructive times to build toward the highs.

That being said, LET'S GO BUCKS!  O-H!

Well said.  I wouldn't have considered myself a naysayer, it just felt like Christmas morning, when everyone else is opening awesome presents, and you are sitting twittling your thumbs, pretending that it doesn't bother you while you patiently wait for something to open.

HAHAHAH-it does have "like" in it, and as we all remember from grammar class, a simile has to have "like" or "as."

Well said. Why are these guys getting all butt hurt just because a few fans get worried about lack of commits? It's ok to worry sometimes.

Everyone is happy things are trending up now, but you know we'll still be having a meltdown if we don't land Hilliard.

It is what it is...

The point is, at a place like Ohio State, one recruit does not a program make. Sure, guys like Braxton Miller, Terrelle Pryor, Orlando Pace, and Eddie George make a huge splash, and contribute to the overall success of the program. However, to get so upset about how a class stands at any one point in time, especially so far out from NSD is the acme of foolishness.

I can't lie, I want hilliard in a buckeye uniform. If he goes elsewhere I'll be okay after a couple days.

Following College Football recruiting is always a losing proposition, as was previously stated we're talking about the whims and vagaries of 16-18 year-old children. They are pampered, preened, wined, dined and genuflected to for most of their lives and then asked to make what is up to this point, the most important decision of their lives. Hundreds of thousands of people are hanging on that decision. I trust UFM and his staff and I'll see you all on NLOI Day!! Have a great Summer, I'll be at M&T Bank Stadium watching the Wishbone get snapped and Navy get sunk. It's June 18, 2014 @ 3:23PM and M*ch*g*n still sux!! Go Bucke!!

I must admit, from what I can remember, I never showed any outward frustration or emotion about not having people signed up yet, because I get the fact that there is a long time before NSD, but maybe on the inside I was wondering how everyone else was getting so many recruits commit, and we were still on the 'outside looking in' if you will. That is when you have to realize (when I have to realize) that I am in my living room, on my couch, writing on a computer. I have no idea the relationships our coaches are making with recruits, I have no idea about the inner workings of recruits minds, and worrying is just a way to take up precious time in my day that I cannot give up.

I have the full trust in the staff, both because they have earned it, and because what the hell am I going to do? Write my congressman? I trust everything the staff is doing and this just adds further literature to the argument (for future recruiting cycles) that recruiting is not over in the spring/summer before NSD. Ohio State gonna Ohio State.

You can feed a bobcat all the chili it wants. That don't mean it's going to crap out diamonds.

I'm glad that Ohio kids are committing and I hope this trend continues.  I really appreciate the recruitment stories of Conner, Burrow, and Green.  These three were all very patient and were willing to work hard and prove themselves.

I'm sure there's way more to it than what I read (I don't follow recruiting as religiously as some others), but I get annoyed when I see a bunch of out of state offers to kids who have never camped at Ohio State while we have badass Ohio kids proving themselves every Friday night at local Ohio football fields during the season and are willing to attend camps.  I know it's an extreme example, but offering an 8th grader just seems stupid. I'm glad the staff finally decided to stop hanging on Gibson's nuts as it became clear that he wasn't that anxious to visit.  And the other thing that gets me (sorry if it has been explained before) is the idea of a "committable offer."  Sounds like an oxymoron to me.  Does anyone know if the staff actually uses this term?  Seems shady.

Anyway, I hope more Ohio kids get committable offers and accept.  And the bigtime national kids, if they step on campus and realize that they want to be what we're about (guys like Eddie George, Ryan Shazier), then I'm thrilled when they commit too.

Woodshed's picture

Many, many, many schools have non-committable offers including osu.

nothing shady about it if it is explained to the prospect. We have no reason to believe that it isn't at osu.

I feel the same as I did when we only had 2 recruits.  Ohio State will always come through with good players.  The only difference between now and when cooper was coach, we didn't have instant recruiting news so we just trusted the system and it worked.  Never knew who was coming in until Feb.

Seen Hubbard play a few times and the 16' recruit George Hill has a ton of upside. His teammate LJ Scott is rated higher but always hurt. Looking for Hill to a be a diamond in te rough. Meyer did his homework here. I really believe it's irrelevant to criticize or worry about our recruiting ever. The state of Ohio lives and breathes football, especially buckeye football. Our history and tradition will recruit ITSELF for many many years to come. Trust our school and coaches. I can honestly say I have never once actually worried about our classes we bring in. We are premiere school.
