I mentioned this in the offensive play-by-play analysis, but I am actually a University of Utah graduate. One of my most common things I bring up with my Utah friends is the desire that Ohio State had Utah’s defense. Well, except for this game, at least. They play physical, fast, and don’t miss a lot of tackles without the assistance of many superstar players. They’re similar to Iowa or Wisconsin, basically.

I was genuinely impressed and surprised by the job that Matt Barnes did over the course of a season, as he patched massive holes in the defense that had already existed. The run defense went from a disaster against Minnesota and Oregon, to being a tough unit to run on immediately after. Ohio State was allowing close to 120% of their opponents’ YPC average while Coombs was the primary coordinator. After Barnes got the job, that number dipped to around 70% up until the Michigan game. This stat controls for level of competition, so it’s hard to say that the lackluster competition had much to do with it.

That Michigan game was something of an anomaly, but the cracks were there. As has been posted by many scheme experts who have analyzed The Game, Ohio State’s fixes to their run defense were rudimentary, and they were exposed by a team that was able to consistently change gaps with a power run game to confuse the defense. I also thought that they had relied enormously on their defensive line, whose struggles coincided with a disaster of a performance.

Regardless, Barnes was able to fix a lot of things, and he included a lot of interesting stuff in Bowl practices as well. In fact, at times, it seemed like he was doing a few things that Jim Knowles was known for. In particular, the usual four down lineman was often replaced with three down linemen, sometimes in a “404 Tite” front, where the nose tackle is directly over the center, and the other DT and SDE are playing the 4-technique. The WDE would then act as a standup pass rusher. Tyreke Smith played this role most often in this game, though Zach Harrison had reps in this position as well.

They also used Zach Harrison in a few different positions on the defense while he was standing him up. While most of the time he was used as a traditional defensive end, there were multiple times where he was lined up as a linebacker. I don’t remember him being “mugged” up against the center of the line with three down linemen, but it certainly might have happened. Ohio State hadn’t had this type of versatility for that position at all this year, so I must imagine this was a change designed to cater to Knowles’ scheme, or potentially give him a look at what things might look like in the future. Cade Stover’s move to linebacker may have also been an audition for the Leo position, as he was often lined up as a pass-rushing linebacker but did have more traditional linebacker snaps.

All of these changes were made with the future in mind. As for the game itself, they worked out…poorly.

First Quarter
14:56 U29 1 10 Gun 13 H-Back Slot 4-3 3-4 Tite 1 Pass 5 Stick Eichenberg 11 Eichenberg (-1.5) jams the tight end, but he doesn't stick with him. As soon as he vacates the zone, the pass is made. Coverage -1.
14:24 U40 1 10 Gun H Fk Jet Orbit Mtn 4-3 Under/Boundary 2 Pass 5 HB Screen Ransom 0 Ransom (+1) is sent on a blitz and jumps the snap. Play-calling +1 for calling a blitz at the right time.
14:20 U40 2 10 Ace Trips Bunch Tight 4-3 3-4 Tite 1 Run   HB Dive Hickman 10 Cage (+0.5) gets solid penetration, but Harrison (-2) gets washed out. Hickman (+0.5) makes a solid tackle. Tackling +0.5.
13:50 U50 1 10 Gun 13 Offset 4-3 Over/Field 1 Run   QB Buck Sweep Eichenberg 5 Smith (+0.5) gets penetration, but can't get home. Eichenberg (+1.5) makes an excellent tackle. Play-calling -1 as it was blocked up well.
13:16 O44 2 4 Gun H Wide 4-2-5 4-3 Over/Boundary 2 RPO   RPO Alert WR Screen Harrison 0 Rising sails the ball on the RPO, partially due to Harrison (+1) getting immediate pressure.
13:08 O44 3 4 Ace Twin TE Tight 4-3 3-4 Tite 0 Run   Mid Zone Stover 0 Harrison (+2) blows up the interior of the line, and Stover (+1) and Kourt Williams (+2) cleans it up. Williams in particular ran through an offensive lineman.
11:06 U44 1 10 Ace Twin TE Tight 4-3 Boundary 3 Run   Split Zone Shaw 5 Cage (+1) gets into the backfield quickly, with Shaw (-0.5) and Eichenberg making the tackle. Shaw should probably get to the hole a little quicker.
10:51 U49 2 5 Gun Twin TE Flexed 4-3 Field 1 Pass 4 Slants Stover 12 Ohio State not set, particularly Stover (-2) and Kourt Williams (-1) who are the two guys who haven't played much. Stover's zone is entirely vacated, leading to the catch.
10:45 O39 1 10 ESPN 4-3 ESPN 3 Run   Inside Zone Chambers 2 Chambers (+1) makes a good tackle in the hole one-on-one with the back, Pledger.
10:21 O37 2 8 Gun Twin TE Flexed 4-3 Boundary 1 Pass 5 Smash Kourt Williams 15 Ohio State once again not set. Vincent (+1) gets decent pressure in the middle. I thought that Kourt Williams (+1) had good coverage down the field, but he gets called for DPI. I wouldn't have thrown the flag.
10:15 O22 1 10 Gun Twin TE Wing F 4-3 Boundary 2 Run 5 Inverted Veer Brown 3 Brown (+1.5) beats a tight end off a block to tackle the QB Rising. Stover (+0.5) helps finish it up.
9:36 O19 2 7 Gun Y Flex 4-2-5 3-3-5 Boundary 2 Pass 4 Hitch Harrison 19 Harrison (-1) should be tighter to Covey, but it's not horrible. Chambers (-0.5) gets out perhaps too early. Play-calling -2, as the zone blitz burns the defense. Touchdown.
8:14 U33 1 10 Gun 12 Empty 4-2-5 3-3-5 Boundary 2 Pass 5 Slants Hickman 27 Hickman (-3) has soft coverage on Kuithe, and then couldn't help out Shaw (-1), who also missed a tackle. Coverage (-1.5) Tackling (-2.5).
7:43 O40 1 10 Ace Twin TE Pair 4-2-5 4-3 Under/Boundary 1 Run   H Dive Sawyer 5 Sawyer (-1.5) gets pushed back,and then misses a tackle.
7:00 O35 2 5 Ace Twin TE 4-3 Under/Field 1 Run   Split Zone Tyleik Williams 6 Tyleik Williams (-2) gets pancaked, but makes the tackle with his leg, which was not called. Kourt Williams (+0.5) might have been able to make the tackle regardless, as he was in good position.
6:27 O29 1 10 Ace Bunch Tight H Mtn 4-3 Under/Boundary 2 Pass   Double Reverse WRP Hamilton 8 Ohio State plays this soundly, but Covey makes a few guys miss. I won't ding Tyleik Williams for missing a diving tackle.
5:45 O21 2 2 Gun Trips H Mtn 4-3 3-4 Tite 1 Run   QB Draw Shaw 5 Great play call by Utah Play-calling -1. Shaw (+0.5) makes a good tackle after Eichenberg gets a hand on him. Cage (+0.5) has a nice spin move to get free.
5:03 O16 1 10 Gun Y Flex H Orbit Mtn 4-2-5 Field 1 Pass 4 H Slip Screen Chambers 3 Chambers (+1.5) gets off his block and hits the back quickly, with Eichenberg (+1) making a big hit afterwards.
4:17 O13 2 7 Gun 4-2-5 Over/Boundary 1 Option   Zone Read Eichenberg 1 Harrison (+1) and Cage (+1) gets good penetration on the inside. Smith (+0.5) and Eichenberg (+0.5) show patience to eventually make the tackle.
3:35 O12 3 6 Gun Twin TE Flexed Tight 4-3 Boundary 1 Pass 4 Mesh Eichenberg 12 This was a perfect throw from Rising to Bernard. Eichenberg actually has good coverage on the running back, but the throw and catch is perfect. Play-calling -1 as Utah does a good job isolating the running back on the linebacker. Touchdown.
Second Quarter
14:11 U21 1 10 Ace 13 Mtn Z Tight 4-3 Over/Field 1 Pass 6 PA Flood Burke 23 Burke (-1) can't keep up with the receiver, but this was a long developing route. Coverage -1. Pressure -2, especially considering how many players bit on the run fake/how many were blitzing. Play-calling -1, as Utah knew they'd bite.
13:38 U44 1 10 Ace Twin Wing TE 4-3 Field 2 Run   Counter Trey Vincent 2 Vincent (+1.5) gets through the line, but can't quite bring down the ball carrier. Cage (+1) also does a nice job of causing havoc in the interior. Tackling -1.
12:52 U46 2 8 Gun Offset 4-2-5 Over/Boundary 1 Option   Speed Option Smith 2 Smith (+1) forces the pitch to the outside and makes a tackle downfield. With the Buckeyes in man coverage, the entire side of the defense is not looking in the backfield. Play-calling -2. Hold on Gaoteote brings this back a bit.
12:41 U44 2 10 Gun Twin TE Flexed H Wide 4-2-5 Boundary 1 Pass 4 Spacing Mitchell 8 Harrison (+1) and Vincent (+1) get pressure on the QB, but he finds the tight end. Mitchell (-0.5) got a bit too much depth, but this was just a good play call against the blitz. Play-calling -1.5.
11:43 O48 3 2 Ace Twin TE 4-3 Boundary 0 Run   TE End Around Mitchell 7 Mitchell can't quite get there, but this is just a good play call. Watching Utah every week for the last few years, this is one of my favorite play calls they have. Play-calling -1.
11:03 O41 1 10 Ace 13 Y Flex 4-3 Over/Boundary 1 Run   Fumbled Snap Smith -2 Utah fumbles the snap, but falls on it.
10:57 O43 2 12 Gun 4-2-5 Over/Boundary 2 Pass 4 Curls Brown 15 Vincent (+1) gets a hit on the QB, but the throw is perfect. What a throw. Brown (-1) should probably be tighter In coverage, but this is just a great throw under pressure. Pressure +1. Coverage -1.
9:47 O28 1 10 Gun Twin TE 4-3 3-4 Tite 1 Pass 5 Scramble Sawyer 22 Cage (-3) gets pancaked, which leads the middle wide open. Sawyer (+1) makes a nice play to get a tackle downfield, even though he gets ejected.
9:18 O6 1 6 Ace Twin TE Wing F 4-3 3-4 Tite 0 Run   Counter Trey None 6 Thomas walks in for a touchdown untouched. Stover (-1.5) gets caught up inside. Ohio State not ready for the counter. Play-calling -1.
7:55 U29 1 10 Ace Twin TE PAir Wing F Jet Mtn 4-3 Over/Boundary 1 Run   Jet Fk Zone Insert Kourt Williams 2 Cage (-1) vacates his gap early as he is trying to get out to the edge. Chambers (-1.5) loses his footing and gets bulldozed.
7:20 U37 2 2 Gun Offset Twin Wing TE 4-3 Field 1 Pass 4 Slants Brown 0 Vincent (+1) gets some penetration, and Brown (+1) has good coverage downfield. Coverage +1. Pressure +1.
7:16 U37 3 2 Ace Twin Wing TE 4-3 Field 0 Run   Mid Zone Harrison 1 Cage (+1) gets into the backfield immediately, and Harrison (+1.5) gets a stop right at the line.
6:43 U38 4 1 Gun 13 Y Flex 4-3 Under/Field 0 Run   QB Power Mitchell 62 Mitchell (-2) gets out to Rising, but can't make the tackle. Shaw (-2) thinks Rising is already down early. Play-calling -2, as selling out was risky, and it didn't pay off.
4:40 U20 1 10 Gun 13 Bunch 4-3 Under 2 Pass 4 Spacing Martinez 7 Martinez and Eichenberg create a tight window and immediately tackle the ball-carrier.
4:06 U27 2 3 Ace Twin TE Wing F 4-3 Boundary 1 Run   Inside Zone Stover 1 Hamilton (+1) gets good push in the middle, and Stover (+0.5) does a nice job staying gap sound and making a stop.
3:30 U28 3 2 Ace 13 Bunch 4-3 Under/Boundary 1 Run   Tight Zone Hickman 3 Hickman makes a tackle after meeting the running back in the hole. I don't have much of a problem with the execution. Everyone did their job, but I didn't see anyone go above and beyond.
2:54 U31 1 10 Gun 13 Bunch 4-3 Over/Field 2 Option   Zone Read Tuimoloau -3 Good time to call the corner zone blitz. Tuimoloau (+2) forces the keep and makes the TFL anyway. Play-calling +2.
2:13 U28 2 13 Gun Twin TE Flexed 4-3 Boundary 2 Pass 4 Smash Smith 23 Smith (+1.5) beats the tackle and nearly gets a strip sack, but the throw is perfect to the tight end. Play-calling -2, as the play is designed to attack Ohio State's zone. Unbelievable throw.
1:49 O49 1 10 Gun Empty 4-3  Boundary 2 Pass 4 Scramble Tuimoloau 4 Coverage is good downfield, and Rising takes off. Everyone does their job on this one.
1:27 O45 2 6 Gun Trips 4-3 Field 1 Option   Zone Read Chambers -2 Chambers (+2) makes a great stop inside, with Vincent (+1) right there.
0:53 O45 3 6 Gun Trips 4-2-5 Boundary 1 Pass 5 Slot Cross Martinez 0 Martinez (-0.5) has adequate coverage, but there was a space for a completion. The receiver drops a catchable ball on a dive. Punt.
Third Quarter
13:43 U20 1 10 Ace 3W 4-2-5 Under/Boundary 2 Run   Mid Zone Eichenberg -5 Eichenberg (+2) gets into the backfield quickly to get the TFL, but Harrison (+1.5) and Cage (+1.5) blow up the interior of the line early.
13:08 U15 2 15 Gun 4W 4-2-5 Boundary 1 Pass 5 Smash Shaw 10 Looks like Brown is bracketing Covey with Hickman, so the receiver underneath is open. Play-calling -0.5, as that's a big chunk, but I do think being cautious is a good idea here.
12:30 U25 3 5 Gun Twin Wing TE 4-2-5 3-4 Tite 1 Pass 4 Corner Burke 0 Burke (+2) deflects the pass downfield with excellent coverage. Tuimoloau (+1) also has decent pressure. Pressure +1. Coverage +2.
11:20 U35 1 10 Ace Twin TE Pair 4-3 Over/Boundary 1 Run   Zone Insert Vincent 7 Vincent (-0.5) and Cage (-0.5) get pushed back a bit, but there isn't much room to run.

10:49 U37 2 8 Gun Empty 4-2-5 Boundary 1 Pass 4 Slant Chambers 9 Eichenberg and Chambers combine to make the tackle on Covey. Play-calling -1, as Eichenberg was one-on-one with Covey.
10:19 U44 3 1 Ace 13 Bunch 4-3 Over/Field 1 Run   HB Dive Hickman 21 Harrison (+1) gets good push in the middle. Kourt Williams (-1) gets caught in the middle, and Tyleik Williams (-1) gets pushed back. Hickman (-2) misses a tackle for a loss, which leads to a huge gain. Eichenberg (-0.5) and Stover (-0.5) take bad angles Tackling -2.
9:34 O34 1 10 Ace Twin Wing TE 4-3 3-4 Over/Boundary 1 Pass   PA Flood Chambers 23 Chambers (-2) gets sucked up in play-action. Play-calling -2, as Ohio State was selling out for the run.

3:41 U45 2 8 Ace 13 4-3 Over/Field 1 Run   H Stretch Eichenberg 2 Harrison (-1.5) gets knocked down on the inside, but Eichenberg (+2) stonewalls the back.
3:16 U47 3 6 Gun Empty 4-2-5 Over/Field 1 Pass 4 Ohio Brown 4 Brown (+1) gets called for DPI, which I disagree with. Maybe a little bit, but it's pretty innocuous. It looked like he was going to hook Covey, but he gets the arm out. Pressure -1, Cover +1.
3:12 O49 1 10 Ace Twin TE Pair 4-3 Under/Boundary 1 Run   Counter Trey Eichenberg 1 Eichenberg (+1) again has a good stop. The defense as a whole is selling out for the run. Play-calling +1.

2:00 O15 1 10 Gun Y Flex 4-2-5 Field 0 Pass 4 Smash Variation Hickman 15 Hickman (-3) again loses the tight end. Coverage -3.
End of Game

Tyreke Smith, Taron Vincent, J.T., Ty Hamilton, Tommy Eichenberg, and Kourt Williams all graded out as champions for me. The four defensive linemen were a surprise, but the four that graded out that well really didn’t make many mistakes, even if Vincent was the only one who really flashed in this game. Here is the defensive chart:

Defensive Chart vs. Utah

play calling 4 19 -15 17.4% Utah attacked Ohio State over and over when they were in zone.

The defensive line was fine, which was more than acceptable after a disaster of a game against Michigan. Utah’s running game is excellent; despite the fact that they had plenty of successful runs against Ohio State, they ran for much less than they usually do. Utah also doesn’t have long developing plays, so most of the point totals are limited to run defense rather than pass rushing. Also, I have never been impressed with Utah’s offensive line, so this performance wasn’t totally unexpected.

As alluded to earlier, Vincent was probably the most interesting performer on the defensive line. He was a guy that they were hyping up in 2019 as being a potentially huge contributor before his season ending injury. In 2020, he was largely a rotational piece. This year, he rotated with Haskell Garrett fairly equally, and was a significant downgrade. That’s not an insult at all; Haskell Garrett was an All-American. It’s totally fine to not be as good as him. This was the first game though where his potential really started to show. I sincerely hope that he comes back for next year, which I am assuming he will. If he emerges at that spot, that would be a huge need immediately filled. This is doubly true considering Tyleik Williams hit the freshman wall hard.

The story of the day on defense was Tommy Eichenberg’s breakout game. I have been grading him well all year, so seeing him getting the traditional counting stats was gratifying and validating. He was the player that improved the most after Barnes took over play-calling duty, going from the biggest liability on the defense to one of its best players. I can’t say enough about how huge his play down the stretch has been for this team, and how big it will continue to be moving forward. He’s legitimately good.

The other linebackers were okay. Chambers played fine, but not as well as he was playing earlier in the year. Still, after an entire season, he has solidified his spot in the starting lineup. A game against a run heavy team doesn’t really suit his strengths in coverage and tackling in space. Holding up fine was a good thing to see.

Cade Stover was the only other linebacker with extended playing time, and I thought he played pretty well. Gaoteote was also playing that Sam linebacker spot early in the year, but it looks like they got rid of that position and put him full time at the Mike. I don’t think they would have moved Stover over to defense if he had locked down that position, though. I think Stover was moved here because he is a good fit for what Knowles wants to do, particularly with the Leo. Did Stover play great? No. Was he average? Yes, and that is remarkable considering the challenge that Utah presented and the roughly one month that he had to learn everything. If I am correct and this was a permanent change to give Knowles options at the Leo, then his play in this game makes a lot of sense.

For the secondary, there were really only two notable players, both of whom are safeties. The first was Ronnie Hickman, who had his worst game of the season. He did have a clutch stop on fourth down late in the game. The team needed that play and he delivered. However, on the fourth quarter touchdown that tied the game, he got beat twice in a row on the exact same play to give up 30 total yards and a score. He didn’t play his best game today, though I still expect him to occupy the Bandit position in Knowles’ defense, which as far as I can tell is the closest thing to the Bullet that his defense has.

Kourt Williams played most of the game at cover safety, which is closest to the Striker in Knowles’ defense. This was an interesting change, as he hadn’t played this position much all year. I imagine it was partially due to necessity, as Craig Young, the natural fit for this game in that spot, had already transferred. Additionally, Marcus Williamson, who had been the team’s best tackler and a willing run defender, was not on the team any longer as well. Still, I would have thought Lathan Ransom would have gotten more reps here. Yes, I know that he had a horrific leg injury, but even before this, Kourt Williams was getting more playing time. Is this going to be a permanent spot in the defense? Maybe, though Tanner McCalister is transferring in to play this spot as well. I have no idea how interchangeable the safety positions are yet, but Williams’ versatility to show that he can play both of those positions well can’t be a bad thing for his future prospects. I think this guarantees that he will be on the field next year a lot, even if he doesn’t start.

What should we worry about for next year?

Upside for the interior defensive line. It’s hard to figure out exactly what will change with the defense after a change in defensive coordinators. However, for the secondary and the linebackers, struggling was not hugely surprising. The secondary lost a ton of production in 2019, and poor recruiting left them with few replacements. With Shaun Wade getting drafted and Cam Brown and Sevyn Banks being injured off and on the entire season, any struggles from an extremely young secondary were fully excusable. Similarly, the linebacker room had just lost four veterans, with about nine years of starting experience between them. Replacing that kind of experience was never going to be smooth.

The defensive line was supposed to break out this year though. Two guys in Tyreke Smith and Zach Harrison were getting a ton of hype in the spring and summer, and both guys were fully expected to be taken early in the draft after a monster year. Javonte Jean-Baptiste was supposed to be vastly improved. Garrett was a returning All-American. This group should have been the best on the team. Yet, they weren’t, and it’s hard to know why. They weren’t bad at all. They were easily the best position group on the defense and probably the fourth best overall behind the WRs, QBs, and RBs. Still, this group has been much better in the past, and it’s unnerving to see them not reach their potential. Personally, I think much of their lack of success was due to the lack of success of the defense as a whole. This is an area where I could see Knowles make an immediate improvement. With Ohio State for the past couple of years, you always knew what they were going to run. This does not cause any hesitation with the opposing quarterback, as they always know what they are seeing. When they don’t know what’s coming, they can panic, or at the very least get baited into doing something unsound. This is where big plays happen. Given Knowles’ track record with producing defenses, I could see this getting rectified soon.

What should we not worry about for next year?

The defensive performance in the Rose Bowl as a whole. The coaches were experimenting with things that they hadn’t done all year, likely to work toward next year with Knowles’ staff. This game was used to get a head start on next year, with new players in different positions. As can be seen from Michigan’s 2020 defense to Michigan’s 2021 defense, a coordinator change can completely change the quality of the defense, even if the personnel doesn’t really change much.

What should we be excited about for next year?

I’ve mentioned him repeatedly, but the arrival of Jim Knowles. This was about as good of a hire as Day could have made, and I can’t believe he pulled it off. I want to pump the breaks a little bit, as I don’t know if he will produce a dominant defense in year one. Still, I think he can improve on this year a little bit, at least to the point where Ohio State will have a top ten defense in SP+. By year three, I think he could have the best defense in the country. That, combined with Ryan Day would be unbeatable. Will that happen? I have no idea. I do think the possibility is pretty strong, however.

We should also be excited about Tommy Eichenberg, who had a statistical performance that matched what he has been doing for the second half of the season. He is going to be one of the best players on the defense next year, and I can’t wait to see how he looks in the new defense.
