Chicago: November 7, 1936
Expectations of the fans were lofty for the Buckeyes entering the 1936 season. Francis Schmidt had guided Ohio State to consecutive 7–1 seasons. More importantly, the tall Texan had battered Michigan by scores of 34-0 and 38-0. Those expectations were not fulfilled.
Entering this contest against Chicago, the Scarlet and Gray were a disappointing 2–3. However, the team was better than the record represented. The three losses were by a combined 12 points. Heading into this tilt with Chicago, the Buckeyes were coming off of a gut-wrenching 7-2 loss to Notre Dame in South Bend. Reminder, this is the last time Ohio State lost to the Catholic high school team from Indiana. The team, and the fans, were in need of a spark. Enter Chicago.
37,301 were in Ohio Stadium's stands to witness the Buckeyes score on their third offensive play of the game. From there, the rout was on. Schmidt used a slew of sophomores and reserve players as the home team mauled the Maroons 44-0.
The convincing win was a springboard for the '36 team as it finished the year with three consecutive shutouts. The Buckeyes defeated Illinois in Champaign, 13-0. The following week, they blanked the Wolverines by a score of 21-0 in Columbus.
