Joshua Perry had 123 tackles in 2014.
Joshua Perry led Ohio State with 123 total tackles in 2014. The junior linebacker was 23 tackles short of making Ohio State's top 10 for total tackles in a season. Perhaps he will make the top 10 next year.

Chris Spielman was the last player to crack the top 10 in total tackles. That was back in 1987.
THE TOP 2, THEN THE REST
By the numbers, Tom Couisineau and Chris Spielman are easily Ohio State's best tacklers of all-time. Cousineau and Spielman account for four of Ohio State's top 10 total tackles in a season. They are the only players in Ohio State's history to have 200+ tackles in a season. I'm sure we will see both player's names near the top of the list for career tackles as well.
IS THE ERA OF TOTAL TACKLES OVER?
1987 was the last time a defender cracked the top 10 in total tackles. That is almost a 30 year drought. Every player on the top 10 list played between the years 1977 and 1987. Why is this window so small? My guess is a change in offensive and defensive football. My guess is that offenses in the Big Ten were run oriented and the defenses were designed around the linebackers.
Will a current or future defender crack the top 10 in this era of spread offenses? Looks doubtful. Below is a look at Ohio State's top tacklers in 2014.
