Helmet Stripe Question (Black/Normal/Lack there of)

Looking at some of the videos from the official Ohio State Football Youtube, I've noticed that all the helmets look varied.

I am fully aware of the Black Stripe tradition that Coach Meyer brought with him.  But some of the helmets are only the Black Stripe; some are Black Stripe covering the Scarlet of the normal Helmet Stripe; some have the normal Helmet Stripe; some have no Helmet Stripe at all.

Is there any significance to the varied looks?  It doesn't seem to be exclusive to position (Defense has only Black Stripe, Offense has Black Stripe on the Normal one, etc.)

I've looked in the site search box and elsewhere on the Interwebs and haven't seen it mentioned anywhere.  Anyone have any insight, or am I just reading WAY too much into it?

From two years ago at the open spring practice, I remembered the QB's and RB's having the full/normal stripe on the helmet, now it looks like a few other guys have it. Not quite sure why.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

The non-striped helmet is generally the practice helmet with the striped one being the game helmet. My understanding is that some players prefer to use their game helmet during practice, for the obvious reason that its what they will be using in the game. It could also have to do with players on a specific unit, like special teams, requiring them so they are more clearly visible in film study of kickoff/punt coverage/protect or they just slapped a stripe on the practice helmet.
