Wasn’t gonna do one today but had a few spare minutes, so what the hell…..
Mark Frederick Farner, known as the singer, guitarist and main songwriter for the ‘70s rock act Grand Funk Railroad, is 67 today. He was born in Flint, Michigan (boo) and did some stuff before forming Grand Funk in 1968 along with drummer Don Brewer and bassist Mel Schacher (formerly of Question Mark & the Mysterians who had a 1966 smash hit with ’96 Tears’). The band recorded some huge ‘70s hits - ‘We’re An American Band’, “The Loco-Motion’, ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’, ‘Bad Time’, and ‘Closer to Home’. I found it a little humorous that one site called Grand Funk the “most successful US Heavy Metal band of the 70's”. Heh. Right ahead of Jethro Tull, I assume. Since the initial breakup of Grand Funk, Farner has done some more stuff including getting a mention in the ‘Homerpalooza’ episode of the Simpsons. Happy b-day Mark. Do the Loco-Motion until you puke.
Coincidentally or not, Grand Funk's ‘We’re An American Band’ hit #1 on the charts today in 1973, also.
