Oklahoma State Penalized for Low APR Scores, Loses Practice Per Week

May 14, 2014 at 12:25p    by DJ Byrnes

Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy may be a man, but his team will lose one practice day per week for running afoul of the APR.

From The Oklahoman:

As first reported by GoPokes.com and confirmed through the university source, OSU’s APR – Academic Progress Rate – numbers will fall below the NCAA minimum requirement, which is 930 spanning a four-year period, or 940 over a two-year period.

OSU fell a fraction of a point shy of avoiding penalty, with its number at 929.41 for the last four years. Had the Cowboys been at 929.50, the number would have been rounded up, meaning they missed by nine-one-hundreds of a point. The Cowboys avoided a more damaging postseason ban.

This is a very significant penalty. For example, the Cowboys' first opponent? Florida State.

I'm pretty sure one less practice a week will have the players dancing.

This really is an example of punishment fitting the crime. The NCAA got this right. Can't get the players to graduate? Try less football. The only thing that could make this better would be to mandate tutors to meet with players during normal practice time.
