PHONE'S RINGING -- IT'S URBAN ON THE LINE
Well, that's a dick move if I've ever seen one. Just because you're upset a kid is leaving doesn't mean you should limit where he can find success. I can understand Marquette (rival), Iowa State (natural choice), and the Big Ten (wouldn't want to transfer to an in-conference school), but the whole ACC? Is Ryan afraid that Utoff (sp?) will go to Duke or UNC? Just seems like a cock block from the coaching staff to me.
What upsets me most is that some of these coaches are the ones who wouldn't even second guess a move if a better job comes calling.
I am surprised by several things in this:
The kid says he doesn't think he feels comfortable in Wisconsin's offense. Had he not seen Wisky play prior to committing? They have played the same uglier than crap style since Ryan has been there. They dribble and pass the ball around from buzzcut to buzzcut until the shot clock is under 5 and then chuck up some nasty outside shot from no-man's land and somehow the ball goes in. That's their offense.
I am okay with not allowing a transfer to go to another school in their conference, but to make a freakin list of ineligible schools is ridiculous. Its just another way for a coach like Bo Ryan to exert their power over a kid. If these coaches really do care about their kids and want the best for them, then who the heck cares if a kid goes to another school and does well? Good for them. Why is the ACC off limits? I didn't realize Wisky had rivalries in the ACC. Bo Ryan's gotta move on and let this kid move on too. You don't have to be such a d-bag Bo.
i understand the B1G ban...all the other bans just show how big of a douchenozzle Ryan really is
"Winter is coming" - Urban Meyer
this is also why i love Matta's classiness
Does anyone eles think Creighton is about to be added to the resticted list?
I can see that, along with Butler or some other program of that type.
The ACC isn't that surprising. You never know which ACC team you will get in the next 3 years. And the other ones are potential out of conference teams they may play. I really do not think that this is that harsh. At least he didnt say no MAC, Big East, or A10.
"Who cares? Go Bucks." - Aaron Untch
Bad argument. Just because you MIGHT play some random team in the ACC or any other conference does not justify exerting power over a player. It's being petty, petulant, and a pussy. Bo needs a swift kick to the grapes.
I didn't really mean to advocate for Bo Ryan. I guess what I meant to say is that this is what many coaches do when a player wants to transfer. They look to their schedules and see who they may play. I think the rule should be changed to give the coach maybe like 3 veto options not including the ability to exclude the coach's conference. So Bo could say no B1G, Iowa State, Dayton, or North Carolina or something.
I completely agree with you - I understand what you're getting at. I would definitely not allow an intraconference transfer. But then I think the rule should be however many years eligibility the player has left, you can prohibit them from transfering to any Big Six (maybe all conferences) school that is currently scheduled within that timeframe, or any natural rivalry. After that, coaches just need to get over it and move on.
Yea the only problem with that is that schedules come out so late especially in basketball. There are only like 4 non-con games set right now and that includes a guess at an ACC team. I think that is probably why Big Baby Bo restricted the ACC. You know as a B1G team that you are playing an ACC team every year so you exempt them all to make sure he doesnt show back up. Personally, if a kid isnt good enough to play for you, then you probably shouldnt be scared of playing against him but I get coach's paranoia about plays and stuff (although that is especially sketchy with the buzzcuts)
Brain fart. Forgot about the Big Ten / ACC challenge.
I feel like Ryan would be able to coach against a former player, and that he could risk him going to an ACC team, on the off chance, that maybe they place that ACC team who may play Uthoff, maybe... Plus, Uthoff may know the mechanics of a their swing offense -but so do most of us. Ryan will adapt to his personel and make it for this season.
Big Ten, sure, Marquette, huge in-state rival, Iowa State, probably woudln't take him anyways since they're giving that scholarship to someone else. Why the whole ACC?
Even Cowherd called him out today. Called him "petty and small".
"It's just another case of there you are". ~ Doc (1918-2012)
Let this be a lesson to any future recruits.
To err is human. Really sucking requires having yellow stripes on your helmet.
There should be zero restrictions on where a kid can get his education and play sports. I don't care if it's a rival school or not. Don't want someone leaving? Either play him or don't recruit him. If they aren't getting PT at your school, then what do you have to worry about?
Absolutely ridiculous, especially in case of that one kid from St. John's? (The tall kid who just sits the bench and goes to grad school or something)
Don't give up... Don't ever give up.
St. Joe's. I agree.
There are no "restrictions" other than basketball, correct? I meant if a Wisconsin football player wants to transfer, Bielema can't tell him he can't go somewhere? Or am I wrong in thinking that?
You are indeed incorrect. Randy Edsall did that to Danny O'Brien for a long time this year, notably not allowing him to speak to Vanderbilt (and former Maryland Assistant James Franklin)
Ah, ok. Not too familiar with the transfer rules. I know Boren (the oldest) came to OSU from Michigan in football. Kinda bizarre that Bo wouldn't let a kid that he just red-shirted not go somewhere at least outside of the big ten - iowa state? for real?
Its not really a true restriction per se. Its more of thing where coaches refuse to release you from your scholarship until you know where you are going. It actually is kind of surprising that they let Boren transfer to OSU but not everybody is a big of a baby as Bo.
Here's the deal - Boren, or any other transfer, can go wherever they want. Uthoff can transfer to Iowa, ISU, Marquette, or anywhere else. The difference with the list of "prohibited schools" is that he cannot go there on scholarship. He can sit out the required year, and then pay his own way while playing.
Boren was a walk-on at Ohio State after transferring within the Big Ten. Same thing happened with Luke Recker and Jess Settles. You can do it, you just have to pay for it...
"What we do in life echoes in eternity"
Let's hope the entire ACC bans football recruits from going to Wisky...especially QBs.
Get over it ya d-bag.
Bo Ryan is a piece of shit. I really hope there are some bigtime NCAA violations to uncover so his ass gets fired.
Class of 2010.
Jay Bilas piling it on via Twitter - basically what we've been saying, Bo could leave for another coaching job without any restrictions (I guess maybe a buyout). Bilas gave the example that Bo left UW-Milwaukee after 2 years.
Bo was just on Mike and Mike. He pretty much made himself out to be an asshat. Golic called him out on coaching buyouts and contracts. What a joke. Let the kid move on. I think the only transfer restrictions should lie within a conference. If he wants to go home and play for Iowa State... big deal, let him. This guy is an ass.
Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.
