Reading the article and some of the comments I'm proud that Vrabel is on our staff (for this year at least). At least he has enough balls to stand up to Bollman. Maybe...just maybe, it is possible that our probems only lie in the offensive staff......and Fickell's inability to call timeouts.

Oh and at this point I just hope to God our team doesn't implode before the end of the season, especially after this month.

Insert sinking ship photo here.

5-7 team this year.  We really are Texas 2010.  Oh well, fast forward to Spring 2012 and my optimism will return.

Depends on who we get to right the ship, to borrow a phrase.  I don't think Pelini is good enough to bring us back to the highest levels.  Meyer could pull a Vermeil, or he could just crash and burn.  That O was bad without Tebow.  Who's left?  Stoops isn't leaving.  Kelly can't coach a lick of D.  Unless Malzahn wants to come up here and leave the D staff completely intact, we're going to have a long waiting game ahead to find a new coach.  I think we'll be okay.  But it may take a 5 year period of mediocrity to get there.

So much this.  Glad to see some reason on the board in terms of coaching options.

But Gus Malzahn? Really? Have you seen Auburn without $cam Newton?

Vrabel's been around long enough to see how successful offenses are coached. Let's not forget he was pretty much the most efficient TE ever to play the game (lulz). Gameplans and playcalling are issues that could be addressed civilly. There's probably something systematically wrong with the way that the offense is being coached.

We need to pay coordinators more money. Bollman sucks, but for what he's paid, he's doing an adequate job. So we either need to go out and hire someone who can do better and pay them more, or accept that we are getting our money's worth.

Agreed. Regardless of who the head coach is or will be, we need to pay our coordinators SEC type money. Florida can lure NFL coordinators away with pay, so should we. We cannot compete with oversigning or warm weather or shadowy bag men/men's suit stores, but I would think we could pay as much as SEC schools. You can kind of look at our situation a few ways and speculate why that wasn't happening. Tress was going to protect his guys so they didn't look for higher profile coordinators or the budget didn't allow for it. Maybe it was both. I think what the program does about this has almost as big an impact, if not more, than the choice for head coach.

Yes! Look at UofM. They went out and paid Mattinson $750k. That's talking with your pocket books ladies and gentlemen. And guess what, the guy is doing well. I mean, fielding a D with a pulse is all he had to do to improve up there. But recruiting, I think some of it is Mattinson. Imagine walking into a LB recruit's house, holding up a picture of Ray Lewis and saying, "You like that? I can make you that."

As much time as I spend on here reading comments, I should spend researching coordinator salaries to write up a blog post on this whole topic. With ppl bitching about Bollman right now, it would be very timely (HINT HINT, *cough Ramzy cough*)

you know.. Mike Leach would probably take an OC job.

THIS.  Chances are he'd even call some run plays!  Honestly, I can't even think about this offense because of how angry it makes me.

I've heard that 2013 NCAA Football is going to feature the "Ask Bollman" feature, where it calls the opposite of what you need in a given situation.

Like I said about Vrabel, the offhand comment he made about getting booed was a shot at the offensive staff. His boys are getting the job done. He's pretty pissed that the offense can't pick them up.

Remind us what that comment was please?

TheHumbleBuckeye's picture

Something to the effect of (paraphrasing) "Kansas City looks pretty good. At least I could have been getting paid millions in Kansas City while listening to boos".

Can you imagine what it's like coming up with a defensive scheme to play Ohio State? Bo Pelini probably puts five words on the white board this week "Eleven guys in the box".

If I were the defensive coach of a team preparing to play OSU, here's exactly what I'd say on the first day of practice:

"They like to run the ball.  We're going to stop the run by blitzing at least 6 guys on every play, mostly blitzes from the OLB position to make the QB step up into the pocket.  We are going to challenge short throws by jamming the line and make them beat us deep if they are going to throw the ball.  You guys have fun working on this, I'm going on vacation for a week."

By chance, that also happens to be what she said.

Love having Vrabel on this staff.  I'm not sure there is any chance he sticks around if his buddy Lke isn't back next year though.

yep. even if most of us can agree about bollman, in-fighting of any kind, ESPECIALLY if players know about it, is awful.

Did anyone read the whole article? Any idea what the story is with Berry?!?
