Brady Hoke: Competition Open for Starting QB Job

Michigan Man Brady Hoke

Brady Hoke's Michigan team has lost 11 games in the last two years and finished 7-6 last year. Everybody knows, including Brady, that's not going to cut it at a school like Michigan. Today, he met with some media and touched on a wide berth of subjects:

The last quote about Hoke running "all" of the "day-to-day decisions" is interesting as it pertains to the Brendan Gibbons case, of which the Michigan student newspaper called Michigan's response "shameful." Hoke declined to get into specifics:

Very interesting stuff, seems like he can feel the seat warming beneath his large posterior

That may or may not be the calzone he misplaced at lunch...

Ever sat in a seat after a man of Brady's girth just has?
I'm not sure Brady is capable of feeling a "hot seat" or if he can decipher between what is normal and what is metaphorically the likelihood he'll lose his job...

I can't stand the way photoshop is used these days - slimming people down to make them look thinner than they really are.

Could be one reason why Nussmeier came to Michigan - he'd be a great HC candidate if Hoke is forced out.

Hoke met with media today and talked about the lack of player development, QB competition and the Brendan Gibbons case.

Guess I missed the part where he said anything about the Gibbons case.

It's ok, tweaked a muscle...or he's dealing with family issues...but it's all on the up and up RS

Brady, how will you make Michigan better next year?

"Hoke said takes pride in own character and integrity."
Laughable. Character and integrity from the guy who wouldn't suspend Taylor Lewan for trying to kill an MSU player laying on the ground. Right...

On the flip side, there's stuff like this out there about Hoke.

Californian by birth, Marionaire by the Grace of President Warren G. Harding.

razrback16's picture

I fully understand the point you're trying to make, but it isn't exactly hard to make the right public relations choice in a spotlight situation where it isn't going to potentially hurt your quest for winning games.
Since we're doing "flipside" situations, let's look at the flipside of Urban Meyer in a similar position. Finds out Carlos Hyde, one of the biggest contributors to the team, was at a bar and had some sort of altercation with a patron. No charges are pressed, and Hyde gets a 3-game suspension. Quite a difference in the way player-related (especially bigtime contributor type players) situations are handled.

Fair points across the board, RAZR.

Californian by birth, Marionaire by the Grace of President Warren G. Harding.

Meyer's action with regard to Hyde is one of a number of reasons why I am the very last Michigan fan in the world to criticize matters in Columbus.
With particular regard to Brady Hoke, I'd ask you to remember that the Gibbons incident occurred in November of 2009.  When Hoke was the head football coach of... the San Diego State University Aztecs.  Brady Hoke came to Michigan in January of 2011; a year and a half after this incident occurred.
That's a hard thing for people to understand.  It was so freaking long ago, it is almost impossible to understand.  But the AAPD investigated, at the time.  It was NOT covered up, at the time.  At the time, there were no charges, and there was no University "Office of Student Conflict Resolution" investigation.  When an OCSD investigation WAS started (FOUR years later; why?), by all accounts that I know of, it was not interfered with in any way.
There is very good reason to suggest that Urban Meyer's team discipline is exemplary.  I'm not sure that there is any reason to suggest that Brady Hoke's team discipline is lax.

MMAN, I gave you an upvote because I find your comment fair and objective. Still, I find it hard to share your opinion that there likely is no reason to suggest that Hoke's discipline is lax. Although I know from other posts that you are a Lewin supporter, I do think that Hoke's handling of Lewin in some situations (the helmet twist vs. MSU, the punching of an OSU fan in AA; let's leave the Gibbons situation out for this post) implies a lack of discipline. Believe me, I am making every effort to remain objective (and perhaps not succeeding), but I feel that Lewin has not been adequately sanctioned. Not acting as a Head Coach is such situations projects an image of weakness at best and uncaring about discipline at worst. I do think that this could harm the team's image overall if not corrected in the future. Would you disagree with this assessment?

MMan, I just logged in to say this: read the post you're replying to. Please. RAZR said nothing about the Gibbons case. Nothing. In fact, the point he did  make, about the Lewan case, is a valid reason to suggest that Hoke's discipline is lax.
I understand you have your feathers in a ruffle about the Gibbons thing (maybe rightfully so?), but not everything is about that case.

"This is a very complicated case: a lot of ins, lot of outs, lot of what-have-yous."

gobucks96's picture

MMan,
Your point about the hire is valid, but the comments Hoke made about Gibbons being injured before the bowl game and the OSU game are separate and very concerning. Saying a person is injured and not suspended from the team only brings into question his decision making. "violation of team rules" would have removed this. Now questions about his decision to play him in the Iowa game are not only an issue but a BIG problem for him.
Also, his comments regarding the kicker in the BCS bowl game motivation are cringe-worthy at a minimum.

DJ, I know you don't need me to validate what kind of a person you are but sincerely, you are a good man! I'm proud to be a fellow Marionite with you.

Maybe if Gardner is beat out for the starting job (again), he can apply for another medical redshirt because of a bad back?

vitaminB's picture

Why would you ask any Mich!gan related questions to Hoke, he has no idea what goes on with the football program.  You'd have to ask Brandon for that.

So if Morris wins QB competition does that mean Johnny football would be 3rd string if he played for UM?

What a crappy competition.
Gardner is as erratic as they come, can be decent but goes to horrible in a heartbeat.
