Wisconsin Trolls NC State with Russell Wilson Billboard

Troll On, Wisconsin

Russ Wilson spent four years at NC State, before transferring to Wisconsin to play his final year. He's now quarterbacked the Seattle Seahawks to the Super Bowl, but it appears Wisconsin is using the occassion to twist the screws on their bitter blood rival(?) NC State.

This billboard appeared on Capital Blvd in Raleigh, which we understand to be a main drag in the city, which is awesome, until you get to the semantics: 1) As 703Buckeye points out, they spelled "Russell" wrong. 2) As LABuckeye points out, that's a European badger, not the North American breed that Wisconsin uses as their mascot.

But while we're talking about Bucky /facepalms, we'd like to point out Bert Beliema lost three games with Russell Wilson as his signal-caller (and Montee Ball, also in the Super Bowl, as his running back). However, those two beasts were on the sideline as Braxton Miller and Devin Smith gave us the defining highlight of the lost 2011 season:

Well played Bucky, well played... but you spelled Russell's name wrong.

True story, I wrote this out as "Russell," posted it and saw the billboard and thought it must be some weird spelling of Russell, went back and deleted the extra L. Turned out, these idiots are the one who got it wrong.

/facepalm, Bucky.

Hell, even TSUN could have gotten that right.

Ahhh... one of my favorite stadium memories.  So happy to re-watch that play.  The shoe just lost its shit when Miller hit that pass.

Wow...just wow!  Very classless, but I love it none the less.

Almost three years later and I still could watch that video on a 24 hour loop.
You also spelled Russel wrong in the title.

LABuckeye's picture

Not only did they spell his name wrong, they also stuck the wrong species of badger on there. Their mascot is the North American one, not the European one.

This is why 11W has the best commenters. They slice to the heart of the matter.

Hmmm....  Do you happen to know what is the airspeed velocity of an African Swallow?

Read my entire screen name....

But African Swallow's are non-migratory.  So it couldn't have brought it back with him anyway...

It's not a question of where it grips it. It's a simple question of weight ratios.

Nice Monty Python reference.

Not to mention it seems like they produce at least one NFL lineman every year.

As a Raleigh native, let me assure that one thing they actually did get right was placement. Capital Blvd. is a main drag in the city and not too far from NCSU campus.

While not far from NCSU and a main drag, Capital blvd is one of the few parts of Raleigh (non-440) where billboards are allowed.  Also, it's a shithole of an area.

Yeah, cause that one year playing football for Wisconsin made Wilson what he is today...

Living near Seattle I can tell you that when he does commercials and mentions his college days it's always Whisky.  Makes you wonder what went down when he left NC State.

DJ Byrnes's picture

IIRC, he had a falling out with his coach over his baseball career (he was drafted by the Rockies, I believe).

^This is correct - O'Brien didn't think Wilson could juggle the two and be effective for the football team. So he took his talents to Wisky for a final season.
As an NC State alum, a Wilson who could spend only 1/2 his time on football would have been tons better than having to endure a full Glennon (trust me...I'm an NCSU alum). Many people around the area and program think this was the straw that broke the camel's back for Tom O'Brien - doesn't look good when you tell your starting (record-setting QB) to take a hike and he leads the team to a Rose Bowl, gets drafted by Seattle, wins the starting job, and kills it in his rookie year. Plus his best teams only could muster 8-4 type seasons.
Here's where the story comes full circle...I'm a Tampa Bay native and huge Bucs fan. As if I hadn't had enough of Glennon (statue in the pocket + resembles a giraffe) in the post-Wilson era, he then gets drafted by the Bucs. Gimme a break!

He had a bad exit from NC State so it doesn't surprise me that he mentions Wisconsin.
I remember reading he had been playing baseball and football for NC State and in the summers he would play minor league baseball. NC State didn't want him to play baseball anymore and to focus only on football and he was told if he didn't focus on football, he wouldn't be guaranteed the starting QB spot. But he refused and sought out a transfer. Which is interesting, cause I don't think he played baseball at all his one year in Madison. I guess it was more of him not agreeing with his coaches at NC State.

Uh, if you play minor league baseball, you can't go back and play college baseball afterward.

Also I'm pretty sure Wisconsin doesn't have a varsity baseball program...not positive on that though.

Sadly you can. Ask good old Bauserman.

bleedscarlet's picture

Kind of did. Without that year at Wisky, he's playing baseball....

I don't disagree, but he could've chosen to play baseball anyway.

Troll On Wisconsin. And I too still love how they couldn't beat one of our worst teams in school history despite having a QB and RB who are playing in the Super Bowl. That lovely game was the lone bright spot of 2011.
