The Birth of Vonny Football

By Jason Priestas on January 4, 2014 at 1:19a

Vonn Bell, a five-star safety that arrived at Ohio State with two suitcases full of hype, earned his first start tonight against Clemson in the Orange Bowl.

He took his lumps at times – most notably on a long Sammy Watkins' touchdown that saw Bell in single coverage on the burner – but he also brought us this beauty, the birth of Vonny Football.

I know your trying to cheer us up 11W staff. but this loss is bad enough to where we give one  fuck at best right now...

there is no greater joy than watching Michigan get slammed. in anything

Great play Lindsey. GO BUCKS!

I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.

Not sure why you got downvoted, that was funny.  :)

He had some good moments and played pretty well for his first start. No way should he have been left alone on Watkins.

dan_isaacs's picture

I don't think he was.  He played like he was expecting safety help.

Yep we triple teamed the underneath route, that can't be what the coverage called for.

Hovenaut's picture

I had my speakers set to eleven.

That's where they'll remain.

buckskin's picture

And he actually wrapped and brought ball carriers down.  Coombs and Fickell:  stay away from his form, it doesn't need fixed.

Travis's picture

This is something I noticed when he made tackles. Something everyone needs to learn for next year. Quit trying to make a devastating hit and WRAP THEM UP!

They need a 2 to tie, a 3 to win it; Sylvester for threeeee... OOOOOOOOOHHHHHH OHHHHHHHHHHH WITH FIVE POINT ONE TO GO!!!

wpitt41's picture

I scream that at the TV more than Speilman. That was one major strength of the '02 team! FUNDAMENTALS!

Chief B1G Dump's picture

Kid had 95 tackles and an INT.
Glad we waited until the bowl game to utilize our 5 star stud.
Vonny Football looked damn good...

razrback16's picture

Slight exaggeration I imagine. ;)

Hmmmm....not sure about Vonny Football (the name not the player).  The way he caught air to snag that, I'm going with "The Bellevator"

Travis's picture

That interception was not only ridiculous, but man is this kid going to be good.
Also, whoever was playing safe-man on that play when he got torched is to blame, not Vonn.

They need a 2 to tie, a 3 to win it; Sylvester for threeeee... OOOOOOOOOHHHHHH OHHHHHHHHHHH WITH FIVE POINT ONE TO GO!!!

Barnett bit at the underneath route.  From watching the replay and seeing Vonn's reaction, I'm about 90% sure Barnett had deep help responsibility on that play.  I'm sure Ross will give us the lowdown in a few days.

anyone else start thinking about analyzing a play, and then just say "Fuck it, Ross has got this,"

Fact is this has happened all season long, and no one knows their respective assignments.

buckeyedude's picture

there you go again, BUCKS777. +1 UV.

razrback16's picture

Yep also, the LB is supposed to bump the receiver to slow his route down, but our guy (I think it was Perry) just let the guy run right by him. LB is Fickell's position group. Can't expect a freshman to go out and play man to man with Sammy Watkins, lol. Gotta get rid of Fickell.

cuttyrock's picture

Very true the problem started when Perry never touched the slot it trips then Barnett takes him leaving Bell with very no help. LB need to be physical against slot wr. Punish them every time you can within those 5 yards. When they get close you knock them off their route and it also slows down timing.

teddyballgame's picture

Vonn Bell played admirably.  This team is loaded with freshman talent and even more great recruits coming in....the future is BRIGHT.

Gametime's picture

Even Vonn was pissed at the safety play. Watkins only burned him because he was supposed to have help. The announcers were wrong for saying that the safety helps when he gets behind the LBs, not true, it's called a 2-DEEP for a reason, that WR had two defenders in front of him and was crossing into Powell's deep zone. CJ was supposed to help Vonn over-top of Watkins.

I can't believe we wasted a season of Vonn Bell for Pitt Brown.

countrybuckeye's picture

^ that

dlb72osu's picture

Not quite an entire season. We had some guy named, uh, um, now what was it? Oh yeah, Bryant. Yeah, that was it. Christian Bryant. I think he had that position for the first 5 games of the season. If memory serves me, he played pretty darn good before an injury finished his OSU career.
But then, Pitt Brown was called upon. Maybe, don't know for sure, V. Bell might not have been ready. Oh well. We certainly had a wonderful intro to him last night.

I've been saying that for months. Probably was down voted for it. Anyone I talk about could be a great person but this is strictly based on football performance. Nothing personal but I'm only calling what i see.

buckskin's picture

I know Bell was supposed to have safety help on the TD to Watkins, but for a freshman getting his 1st significant playing time all year against the #1 receiver in college football, I really didn't think his coverage was that bad.  Was he burnt, yes, but not by much.  I wonder if he had played earlier in the year and been more comfortable on the field if that play hadn't been a little different.
Apple, Conley, Burrows anyone?

wpitt41's picture

I said this earlier in the year but what in the world happened to Apple? The guy looked like a stud in the spring game. I know it is the spring game but he was going against some good Buckeyes and shutting them down. Had an interception I believe as well.
He might have been a spring game star, because I was shocked to never see him out there (if he was out there, I missed it).

Secondary will be sick with Bell, Burrows, Conley, Apple and Webb. Just pray that Coombs isn't there to screw it up and all these fellows learn some old school Tressel era fundamentals like wrap up for the sure tackle instead of going for the knockout hit.

I love me some Coombs, but am suspect about his coaching abilities. Was he or Urban the special teams coach? I know Urbz has done that in the past, I thought Urbz relinquished the duties to Coombs though. Make the guy the Special Teams coordinator / Recruiting Pitchman!
He did get us Cameron Johnston, who was often overlooked because we didn't punt much. But I thought he kicked exceptional. Responsible for 2pts. + the other recruits he has sold on what it means to be a Buckeye!

SHAKENBAKE68's picture

I saw way too many in our secondary not looking back for the ball.( didn't see Bell making this mistake)

There is no such thing as "friendly fire"..

Bucks777's picture

Give him time to learn under coombs and this staff and he will turn out like the others, here's to hoping not.

I'm more for ball skils.

This would have been the play of the game if philly could go back in time and just wave his hand over his head

danavh4's picture

He is going to be an All American...just watch.  It wasn't just the ball skills, it was how he positioned himself between the receiver and the QB and read the play.  All the young guys got better by the end of the game.  They aren't where they need to be yet...but getting the experience last night made a huge impact on them for their me...some times in a loss, you gain more than you know.

Michigan Fan: "We lose a long snapper and the whole team goes to shit!"

countrybuckeye's picture

@DANAVH4 --- Do you have any spare time to coach for tOSU?  I'm serious.  You obviously understand young men's minds.
Please give Urban a call.  He could use your insight as an example for those already on the payroll.
There are many commenting here today who would benefit from taking your perspective ....

The Future is BRIGHT indeed. Way to step up Vonn!

Bucks777's picture

Our future is only as bright as the incoming players are developed and coached up to be. So we weill see how this staff does in turning them into STUDS!! They have all the skills and physicality in the world so let's see what happens, I think we all know if we keep the same coaches in place, we will have the same results.

bucknasty13's picture

Definately don't like the Vonny Football name.  We can do better than this.

mrspray's picture

It's not everyday that Bell is gonna have to matchup against a duo like Watkins & Boyd. It's not out of the question that he will in the future, but I feel like he put up a great effort all game long. If Watkins doesn't make that catch (or Bell makes a play), his stock for next year is even higher than it already is.

In case you're curious, it's Mr. Spray

Once urbs recruits are in there watch out. Bosa and Bell
Were the best 2 tosu defenders last night w/ Marcus as well. All urban recruits

That play was one of the best defensive efforts by one player that I have ever seen.
i had to watch it 3-4 times. It had it all. Instincts, athleticism, intelligence, and hands. Just awesome.

I watched Webb and Smith playing in your face physical and forcing the great throw and was wondering how long does it take to make them unsure and timid.

Since the first few games I have been yelling at the screen to put Vonn in. Such a great guy with huge talent, when he got burned for that touchdown I said "True freshmen mistake, watch he'll make a play!" and boy did he ever. Not only this interception, but it seems as this dude was in on every tackle. Even the bubble screens which for some reason we gave them cushion on!!!!!

"Because I couldn't go for three!"
