Oregon Starting TE Suspended, Others Disciplined For Roles in Snowball Fight Gone Wrong

From ESPN:

Oregon has suspended starting tight end Pharaoh Brown for the Valero Alamo Bowl for his role in a snowball fight.

Unidentified players reportedly organized the snowball fight and more than 100 students participated.

According to a video that went viral Monday, the group stopped several cars and pelted them with snowballs and dumped containers of snow on windshields. In one case, a driver who got out of his car -- identified by KATU-TV as former professor Sherwin Simmons -- was hit repeatedly and had a large container of snow thrown on him through the driver's side door.

The words don't really do the video justice. It sounds like juvenile hijinks until you see these idiots were impeding traffic on public roads. (Not to mention, filming it/letting themselves be filmed while they did it.)

Things have soured on the Oregon Ducks in 2013. They carried the #2 flag for most of the year before losing two games, their other TE, former five-star Colt Lyerla left the school (and was subsequently arrested on cocaine charges); former players called out their fans; they're going to the Alamo Bowl when some thought they would get a BCS bid and now this.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

Cameras are everywhere and everyone is watching your actions.  Everyone, whether athletes or not, need to watch themselves in public.  It is not just Big Brother that is watching.

The fact that someone is watching sends the wrong message. That sounds almost as if this type of activity is condoned. Having a consensual snowball fight is one thing but this activity was a disrespectful and undesired by the driver of those vehicles.

According to the Tallahassee Police, the professor was a more than willing participant in the snowball fight.

Funniest comment I have read so far today, bravo! HaHa

What is this? A center for ants?!? How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read if they can't even fit inside the building?

It sounds silly to suspend a kid for a snowball fight, but boy I hope our coaches keep the troops together better than the hot mess of a dumpster fire raging in Eugene these days.

mh277907's picture

It sounds silly but did you watch the video? I think the players deserved to get suspended especially after their attack on a retired professor.

I'm not saying they didn't deserve it - I agreed with the original post that it sounds silly (the headline that a player got suspended for throwing snowballs, in other words) even though in reality there's no reason to pelt a retired prof, not to mention everything everyone else has said about mob/pack mentality and the potential dangers, etc.
What I was really getting at, and the obviousness of my point was clearly lost in translation, is that Oregon is in a bit of a shame spiral here and I hope our guys rebound and reload from last weekend's letdown.

mh277907's picture

Ahh, I got ya. I agree - what seemed like a seamless transition from one coach to the next is quickly trending downhill. For OSU, the loss sucks but maybe a month of these guys hearing that they are overrated and that the defense sucks will be good for them.

If I was a coach I would send a message and cut the football players involved in this activity!
At what point does it not become an ASSAULT charge??  Look up the definition people..
If someone walks up to you in the Mall and throws water on you...it is assault.
Doing an act against a person who wishes it not be done,  is assaulted be it. Throwing snowballs at the car as hard as you can, trying to cause a dent or possible damage?? What's the purpose, and then a person opens their car door and get snow thrown into their car and into their face...not funny I would press charges.

Kaceybrown's picture

wow. I don't know why someone would think this is ok to do.

USMC11917's picture

Wow I can't even post what I want to post on this because the things I want to say are likely not permissible. Arrogant pack mentality right there. Rude and inconsiderate and disrespectful. If he would have just gone on his way and bumped him with his car everyone would make him out to be the bad guy.

Spot on about just continuing on.  There probably would have been 'injuries' also, and then a lawyer

Honestly that guy got lucky. Never should have gotten out of the car. You never know what can happen with mob mentality. They want to damage the car? Let them damage the car. It's just a thing and that's what insurance is for.

I must have missed the point in time when they were "mighty."

I used to think throwing snowballs at cars was a good time until a 6 foot burly-ass Marionaire turned around, climbed out of his Ford Explorer (which I had missed, btw), ran me down, knocked me to the ground and would have probably murdered me right there next to Marion Harding's tennis courts if a woman hadn't been walking her dog through the adjacent soccer field.

Agreed with an above sentiment ol' professor should have never gotten out of the car. Completely idiotic move. However, I'm not sure how many insurance policies cover "car attacked by angry gang of snow-wielding idiots" incidents?

As long has the ol' professor has comprehensive coverage .. he is good to go!  My question is where is the campus police ... probably assisting the Lansing PD with that dastardly case of "burn the couch"

Yes, I'm sure he wants to pay his deductible and see his premiums go up next year because of a snowball fight that got out of hand...

BierStube's picture

Typically (since there is video) the carrier would subrogate against the perpetrators and secure the professors deductible as well as compensation for the damage to the vehicle.  If the parties involved in the damage are minors or still considered a resident relative while at school, their parents homeowners policy would respond.  Thus there would be no need for the professor to have anything out of pocket nor have his premiums increase.

I_Run_The_Dave's picture

His premiums could still increase...  I was involved in an accident where I was not at fault, and although my deductible was recovered by my insurance company and refunded to me, my premiums still went up the next year.  There were no tickets or other accidents on my record within 3 years of the accident.  I don't have that insurance anymore, btw.

Have you thrown a snowball at a car since? I understand the whole mentality "let's be civilized" "don't stoop to their level" But some of the best lessons in life are learned through fear. Btw, these points are made in reference to the situation not the incident you spoke of.

Oregon's TE was 0/11 in snowball receptions, thus, was suspended for the Alamo Bowl

Everyone has a camera in their pocket nowadays.  If you're semi-famous in your local neighborhood and you're doing something ridiculous in public, there's a really good chance it's going to be on video.  You can differ as to whether that's a good thing or bad thing, but it's definitely true.  What a bunch of morons.

At the point where the dude threw the bucket of snow into the prof's car, this crossed over to full-on stupidity.

I went to school with Pharaoh, he's from Cleveland. This is too bad to see that now that he is finally starting he has gotten himself into trouble doing something stupid like this
