What a stunner.
Less than a year after calling out Urban Meyer and saying he didn't want the Big Ten to be anything like the SEC, Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema is departing to take the top job at Arkansas.
While we can only imagine how a man that complained about Urban Meyer's agressive recruiting will deal with 13 piranhas in the SEC, the real tragedy here is we, as Buckeye fans, are losing a nemesis.

Comments
Wow. I'm shocked. Seems like a trade down (for Bielema).
He figured he got off lucky this year with Ohio State not up to Urban's usual standards. Probably figured by next year, UM would have the Buckeyes to the point where he can name his score against Wis and didn't want to be around to suffer through it.
I immediately thought the same thing when I heard the news: he knew that Wisky wasn't going back to the Rose Bowl again any time soon and wanted to go out on a high note.
That or Arkansas offered him a sh!t-ton of money, hookers, and blow! :-)
I'll miss making fun of that guy...
Real fans stay for Carmen.
We still can make fun of him when he's playing against MAC schools and Nerdwestern in the Meineke Car Care bowl every year.
-The Aristocrats!
You'd think it would take money, hookers, and blow to leave Wisconsin for Arkansas but really it was just back stage passes to a Nickelback concert and some coupons to a BBQ place next to campus.
The correct abbreviation for Meyer is UFM, because UM is kinda tsun
UM = University of Maryland.
Um = TTUN.
Ok you do speak the truth. An up vote for you
When was the last time the coach of a dominant program left in a time of success for another dominant program having an off year? So now Buckeye fans will not have the traditional object for hate.
Sparty wasn't quite dominant, but Saban leaving MSU for LSU? I just seem to recall being perplexed as to why he made that move at the time.
does Urbs count?
I mean...when he "retired" from Florida, the writing was on the wall that Tress was on the first train out of town. Considering the fact that The OSU was his dream job, how far fetched of an idea is it that he'd let the smoke blow over and ride in as the white knight?
He could have came in that same year then.
This makes me hate Wisconsin.... less? More? I am so confused.
Go Bucks!
The SEC just got a whole lot uglier.

I guess Arkansas wants to "throw their weight around" in the SEC?
I kill me.
Terrible timing. They are preparing for the Rose Bowl! Hope for the Big Ten's sake they come together. On the other hand, hard to cheer for Bielema's Badgers. Another reason Buckeyes won't like the SEC.
bwahahahaaa, yes you do.

And towards Nick Saban. He went from being Urban Meyer's bitch to Nick Saban's bitch.
I want the first Barry Alvarez reaction that can be found. He's gonna out of coaching retirement, schedule Arkansas for four years in row, just so he can choke slam Bert for this move. #hunch

^This!
Breaking: New Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema eats SEC.
Had to upvote you Matt, I literally "lol'ed" at your comment
Your appreciation is much appreciated.
I like how your comment can be read either literally or figuratively.
Figuratively, Bert's football philosophy - not to mention his physical presence - will help to slow down all that SEC speeeeeed! I.e., Bert will erode, use up, or waste the SEC speeeeeed until such time as SEC speeeeed is slowly, painfully excreted into a stagnant lump.
All part of Delany's strategy to take down the SEC.
Like him or not, this is not good news for the B1G. Not only is a top tier team losing its coach, its losing it to a 2nd tier SEC school. Perception wise this does not look good. Hopefully Alvarez will pony up some cash and get a quality replacement.
I wonder if this has any affect on Jones at UC. Wonder if he will hold off on making a decision at Colorado now?
I guarantee it's not a prestige move, Arkansas offered more money than he could probably ever make at Wisconsin. Bielema's a good coach, but he ain't worth the probable $3.5 million that Arkansas offered.
He's going to get bitch slapped by Saban, Miles, Muschamp, and Spurrier on an annual basis.
Don't forget Sumlin
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
and Malzahn. figure him to finish 5th in the SECwest each year at best. lol
I think in the long term will be better overall will have the chance to hire a real coach.
Who can blame him with the way UFM is going to dominate the B10 for the next X years.
Those ACC 5th year QB transplants will do REAL WELL against SEC DEFENSES YESSSS
What a huge phoney... he'd rather coach in a hillbilly state/ live in Arkansas vs coaching in the same conference at Mr. Urban Meyer!
D. Anthony
You would have thought that the pigs would have learned their lesson about hiring former BIG TEN coaches but i guess not...Have fun Arkansas! Now lets see if there are any players to our liking.............
Battles are sometimes won by generals; wars are nearly always won by sergeants and privates. Football is no different, the guys down in the trenches win the games, not the coach.
There must be Casinos near campus. In other news, Bert and his doppelganger, John Daly, can be bets friends.

Thanks for putting that up, i watched it replay like 10 times, I would up vote if i could. Go Bucks! Bielemia is running, not with his tail between his legs because there's no room due to the chubby leg rolls, but running indeed.
Well done, 128.
almost prefer this moment over BB leaving today... It was a long emotional game with his RECORD on the line ...
Go Bucks! Roll-Tide!
Should be considered the best play of the year! With the situation, the record for Ball, undefeated season on the line, that play was more impressive than any I have seen this year.
Sources say he still wants to coach the Rose Bowl. https://twitter.com/Mark_Schlabach/status/276055893760684033
Of course he does. But will they let him? It probably would be a stronger move for the program to tell him to buzz off.
No, a Wisconsin Man will coach Wisconsin!

As others have already mentioned... I'm going to start feeling sorry for Pitt who can't keep a coach for more than a year.

edit:
What's ironic is he gave up a lot of job security. If he gets fired after 3 years he will have given up a lot of money from his lifetime guarantee at Wisky.
Interesting point. I hadn't really considered that Wisky may have opened the door to his leaving by closing up the purse strings. Three consecutive Rose Bowls has to buy something, right? On the other hand, maybe Alvarez saw a graceful out and the opportunity to upgrade at coach (and I say this thinking that Bielema was a pretty solid coach) by letting Arkansas outbid him. Wonder if this will play out in drastically different accounts of his departure?

I will be very interested to see who Wisconsin hires, if I were them I would go after David Shaw.
Please no. I'd rather see Shaw take over as the Browns coach, that's my pipe dream.
So he has a record of 1-3 against JT, and 0-1 against Meyer(0-2 if you count losing Dodson.). Now he's going against Saban? Good luck with that...

If there was such thing as 11W stock, I would have went all in on how many times there has been a variation of the phrase "Bielema is scared of Urban". I would be quite wealthy in 11W land.
I'm with you. Maybe he is scared of Urban but then why run into the exact division of Saban and Miles? That makes no sense.
Frankly, I think he sees the limitations his program will have and thinks he has better opportunity in Arkansas. I don't see it and think Arkansas is getting swindled. It was his offensive coaches that made him look good and this year is all about OSU being on probation.
I agree, I actually think he had a good thing at Wisconsin, esp with the system they had in place.
Self building stock. You would make to much money by commenting that billions of times over yourself. And nobody would care because Bert was scared of Urban
WOW! Well I guess Louisville can breath a bit easier now! Just need that Tenn job to get filled. Maybe Hoke can leave too!

Talk about a negative percetion on an already suffering B1G. I hate the SEC chant as much as the next but if we're going to make it to an NC game (knock on wood) the conference needs to be stronger. We're going to see an undefeated SEC vs a one loss SEC over an undefeated B1G. I know complete BS, thanks in part to media (ESPiN) and a truely weak conference. Our peers need to pony up and start paying these guys what they're worth or this could become something that happens regularly.
Nothing like dancing on the field in 02...
Following the logic that I have heard from SEC fans, Urban Meyer must have chased him out of the B1G.

Wow...shocker. No one will believe me know but last year when Chryst left for Pitt I pondered how many years it'd be before he returned to Madison. We'll see if that's who they go after...sucks to be Pitt.
I don't know how to feel about this. What the fuck!?
Class of 2010.
I don't think that he will be unsuccesful at Arkansas as some are suggesting, many midwestern coaches have actually had a ridiculous amount of success down there. I don't think he will touch Saban but I could see them returning to national relevance and possibly challenging LSU.
Lou Holtz coached at Arky, but don't remember how he did there or how long he stayed.
"Political correctness is tyranny with manners." Charlton Heston(1924-2008)
I can't find Arkansas' logic in making this move. I'm stumped.
From Bielema's angle, I don't understand it, either. He's secure at Bucky as long as Alvarez keeps breathing, he's riding an institutional culture of running, power football there that is virtually reproducing itself. The money isn't all that much better, he's under sanctions, and if he thinks he's getting his toes stepped on in recruiting now, wait until he mixes it up with Miles, Spurrier and Saban. No open cheese bars anywhere near Little Rock or Fayetteville, either, and southern sausages don't stew or casserole well.
Unbelievable.
I'm now 90% sure Strong stays at Louisville. Clearly, the big boys aren't viewing him as a top choice, unless Tennessee gets desperate.
HUH? What makes you think Arkansas said no thanks to Strong. Perhaps it was the other way around. Your comment makes no sense. Strong is on top of a lot of lists, especially Louisville's!
There's no clear evidence anywhere that Strong was considered seriously at Arkansas. That's why I said it. And considering Strong is Louisville's current coach, I'm assuming he's at the top of their list.
There is no evidence that they haven't spoken with Strong! You just insinuated that Strong isn't considered a top hire as a head coach but Bielema is. Bielema stepped into Alvarez's team with an identity, the players to fulfill that identity and was already apart of that organization. He was handed the team on a platter. Louisville was in shambles when Strong arrived. Plus it is harder to recruit at Louisville than it currently is at Wisky. Strong is considered a top recruiter, especially in the south, and many teams in the south covet him.
I just think you are reaching with your "strong doesn't belong with the big boys" comment. As a fan, I will take Strong as a HC any day over Bielema. To me, Bielema is the back up plan. After being said no by the real "big boys" which I believe includes Strong. Choice between Tennessee and Arkansas if he would leave Louisville, Strong would take the Tennessee job in a heart beat.
and even though he is currently Louisville's head coach, doesn't mean he would be their top choice. If he sucked, they would say go ahead and leave. They are moving to the ACC so they can get a decent coach if they felt they didn't have one yet (not to mention any coach out there would love to have Teddy Bridgewater). But Strong is a keeper and he will get a huge raise which he deserves, where ever he ends up.
Now Urban, Saban, Miles? Of course not but Bielema isn't in that league either!
My take on this is that Bret Bulimia has a pretty massive ego, and simply wants to try and work his way up the food chain, so to speak, in college football. Must feel he can be successful at Ark and parlay that into something "even greater". Probably felt a little underpaid. Probably felt Urban, and even the Hoke-er was gonna get the better recruits in the midwest. Maybe he thinks there's enough talent to go around in SEC land that even he, blind pig/badger that he is can find plenty of acorns.
I personally don't think this will be a successful strategy for him, but who knows, maybe he did want to get out of Lord Alvarez's shadow. I will miss hating the guy - he was a pretty damn good nemesis for us........and so forth.
C ya Bert. Good luck in Ar Kansas, u r goin' to need it.
Seriously, WTF is he thinking? I know the almighty $$ wins, but Arkansas? Really? Maybe he made this move so in 2020 when Iowa can afford to get rid of Ferentz bert can go back home.

You just got to love how OSU is essentially given a spot in the B1G Championship game next year. Penn State will still be on probation, Wisconsin lost its head coach, Purdue with a new coach, and Illinois will be Illinois. Heck, Indiana is the team to beat in our division next year. Who would have thought that?

It's now time to resurrect the reputation of Wisconsin Bert while demonizing SEC Bert.
We'll pretend that when Bert was coach of the Badgers, Buckeye fans didn't like him, but we always respected him as a coach and a man.
Once he went over to the dark side, however, his soul became irredeemable.
I now realize that Wisconsin Bert was actually okay, just like I realized, after he retired, that Bo Schembechler wasn't a horrible human being. Sorry, Good Bert, we barely knew you.
I have never had a problem with him. The only thing that was odd was his crying about Coach Meyer taking a recruit. But when Barry told him there is no agreement and to recruit harder it seemed to end the whole thing. I also like Alverez, and if he picked him as his replacement, I trust his judgement. I would guess that some people don't like him because he has been able to beat OSU.
I've always liked Alvarez. I didn't know that I sorta liked Wisconsin Bert until about 10 minutes ago. I really hate SEC Bert.
I've definitely got mixed feelings. Wisconsin just got weaker as did the B1G (like it didnt already need that) and we lose someone we love to hate and love even more to pwn. If Bi-Llama turns the Razorbacks around we could see him in the Sugar Bowl in the playoff. THAT would be sweet. To see Coach Meyer beat him as an SEC coach...in the playoffs...for all the marbles.

EXACTLY - this is the moment when the big College Football Karma Wheel started to turn for the SEC. You heard it here first folks!!! (as Brent Mussbarfer would say).
Man, I can't stand the guy and my first reaction is I'm glad he's gone. He doesn't have much class- huh, and he's going to the sec. Imagine that? I digress- It's another (cough cough-argh) good coach that's leaving the b1g...I don't think, at this time, we can afford to lose another coach that can at least coach a team that wins more than 50% of their games.
And I'm sure the sec will make a big deal out of stealing a coach out of the b1g...double argh.

The B1G as a whole needs to get some top tier coaches in the conference instead of Jerry Kill, Kevin Wilson, Tim Beckman, Kirk Ferentz. Here's hoping Wisky opens up the checkbook and do what it can to boost their program and conference.
Great point, we don't know how this will affect the conference until we see who Wisconsin hires. If they go out and get a great coach then it's a positive move.
Oh my God...I am SHOCKED at this move. I haven't laughed this hard in awhile. Wow. I'm actually sad to see Bert go; I took great pleasure in irritating his fat ass every time the Buckeyes pounded his ass.

The only reason I can see him moving to Arkansas is that they backed up a Brinks truck to hire him. Let's face it, being married to a Vegas hooker is not a cheap lifestyle to maintain.
Is the NCAA investigating Wisconsin and we just haven't heard anything about it yet?
Has anyone mentioned to him that it gets humid in Arkansas? Very, very HUMID...
Haha wow crazy news! Totally unexpected!
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
What's funny about this is this may actually help the B1G...since Bielema is such an upstanding coach with gentlemen's agreements in place we should easily poach any recruit thinking about going to are-kansas. Please let us schedule Arkansas to our non conf schedule! Please please please!!!

I'm already hearing the Badger fans bring up Tressel. God they are so envious of us. I love it!

That would be kind of amazing really. Tressel in the same division as Ohio State.
Can't ever see Tressel taking that job. But never say never, huh.....

Bert for $3.5 million does lend credence to my theory that SEC dominance is unsustainable.
Obviously, they're overpaying, which will have negative long-term ramifications for Arkansas football.
But think about the larger implications of an SEC World in which Bert gets paid $3.5 million. Either Bert falls on his chubby face, or every time he wins an SEC game, he's taking away a victory from another school that simply does not tolerate 5-7 seasons - Texas AM, Ole Miss, Auburn, Miss St, etc. Furthermore, Bert and Malzahn are not being hired to go 0-2 against LSU and Bama every year.
As anyone with half a brain can comprehend B1G football is one life support,Meyer and Delany working together are gonna pull the plug.Wise move Bielemonster, who's next to desert this sinkin' ship?GO BUCKS!
I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.
Well, Bret won't have to worry about Urban beating him year in and year out. He now has to wroory about Saban, Miles AND Sumlin doing it! And that doesn't include teh cross division sure losses to Muschamp, Richt and Spurrier
#Badgers source also tells me #bretbielema knew at least two weeks ago that he was leaving, but was weighing "a couple" SEC schools.
-Tweet from Rick Pizzo. Supposedly Tennesee or Auburn.
This is like threve, a combination of three and five, simply stunning
Wonder if Butt Head is gonna try and run up scores in the SEC if he can? ha.
Well, he won't have to worry about getting beaten by Urban again. The good news is that I won't have to look at that sour-puss face anymore. SEC mediocrity 4 life! Good luck with that!!!!
"We hate to lose, but when we do, rest assured we'll be back, and someone will pay the price." Coach Hayes
This is very disappointing for a few reasons. Bielema was a horrendous recruiter, but his tremendous success in Madison was a testament to his coaching quality. In that vein, Wisconsin, despite a huge surge in revenue by being in the Big Ten and being part of that network, couldn't afford to keep Bielema around. That is inexcusable.
But most importantly, this is devastating to the 11W Dubcasters, who have taken most humorously to Sarah's gagging at the mere mention of Bret Bielema. Bielema was a great villian to Ohio State fans, and that was never more apparent than in the musings of Johnny and Sarah.
Well, instead of being a big cheese in a shitty conference, he's now going to get paid a few million dollars more to take annual lashings by Nick Saban and Les Miles before he is inevitably fired in 3 years. Good riddance, you sonofabitch. I hope you rot in gravy.
mmmm...gravy.

The players reactions to the news:
"Your going where Coach?"
“Right now, Michigan is not at the pinnacle of college football, and that’s all Urban Meyer cares about...He’s been there and knows what it takes to get there.”
He gets better access to farm animals in Arkansas =)
This will make yet another crappy B1G team. It will be interesting to see what Wisky does. I'm seeing Hazell getting a call.
Bert may have been scared out of the conference by the recent Rutgers and Maryland additions.
And he gets to play road games against Florida, Alabama and LSU next year.

I bet he's praying for Saban to take a NFL job.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
He's gonna look baddass with his Arkansas windbreaker zipped all the way up and his man-boobs flowing in the wind as he rides Petrino's old motorcycle thru town.

Arkansas is a second-tier power in the SEC. The notion that Bielema would bolt a second-tier B1G program, in a city with something of a cultural and intellectual character to it, to take a gig in Arkansas . . . well, it's another slap in the face to the Big Ten's standing in the conference pecking order.
Wait: who am I kidding? The cultural and intellectual character of Madison vs. the prospect of tooling around town on a Harley with a winsome blonde Athletic Department page wrapped around your back? We all know Bielema's choice here. (I'm guessing this subject was covered in the preceding 167 comments: if that's right, I apologize. If I'm wrong: shame on you all.)
It's true Wisky has thrived in recent years without the benefit of any significant recruiting classes. It will be interesting to see where Bielema's teams go from here.
Upvote for Slade!

A pig joins the hogs..... Perfect
Anyone have any good quotes from the Wisky sites. I'm sure it is a gold mine at this point.
Arkansas must have backed up a Brinks Truck and told Bret Bielema to take as much as he wanted. Or handed him a check to fill in the amount.

He loves the Arkansas head coaching perks that Petrino enjoyed. You go gamblor.

just got home & saw this....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Tell me this is a joke. I was getting used to Urban owning Bielema & watching Bielema make confused whincing badger faces on the sideline every year.

It appears someone saw the writing on the wall and would rather be in the SEC then see OSU dominate him for the next 6-10 years. LOVE the caption under the picture by t11W staff. I see what you did there...and I loved it!

I think I understand the Arkansas logic. They were probably sitting around and saying "With Alabama and LSU in our division what we need is a coach that can finish a season with five losses, third place in their division and still figure out how to go to a BCS game. If only there was a candidate like that out there."
I don't even know what to think. I really hope their AD decides to take over and coach the team. Kick Bielema out for declaring on a different school right when bowl practices starts. Here's to beating a Bielema lead Arky team in a bowl soon!
I think this is the best decision by Bielema of all time. Think about it: He gets to do what he's always done. Beat up on FCS schools by 400 points then be at the bottom of the upper tier in the conference. The difference is in the SEC that's good enough to land you in the top 10 of the BCS. In the B1G if you beat up on University of Little Rock School for the Blind Midgets but lose to the top 2 teams in the conference you're fighting for a top 20 ranking (or being ranked at all). If you do that in the SEC, you've gone through a football schedule that would even give Adrian Petterson nightmares, so you'll still be rewarded with a top 10 ranking.
Brilliant. Absolutely spot-on.
We can't stop here; this is bat country...
Isn't Arkansas the team that hired John L. Smith to stablize the program? Sounds like they are on a roll with the coaching decisions...

This is gonna be fun to watch Arkansas play football next year! Trolololol!
You tell the SEC when they can learn to read and write, then they can figure out what we're doing. - Gordon Gee
My first reaction was sheer, unadulterated laughter. My second feeling was sadness, as I had grown quite fond of bashing Bielema-coached teams' skulls in, then watching him squint as though he were attempting to read a crossword puzzle from across a crowded cafeteria. Then I mocked him for being scared out of a shit Leaders division by UFM.
Now that I've sobered up, though; I am actually a little shocked that he would leave a place like Wisconsin, where he had pretty good job security and could make it to BCS bowls with sub-par W/L records. If a guy like Bert would leave the Midwest, where he was born and bred (on a goat farm), and make a lateral move to a mid-level SEC school that basically survives on LSU and Bama leftovers, who would ever stay in the B1G? I think this may clearly demonstrate the systemic cracks in the B1G's foundation. I have been waiting for 5 years for the "cycle" to even itself out and come back the Big Ten's way, but I'm starting to think we may be in trouble. Thoughts?
We can't stop here; this is bat country...
Well we have TSUN, TOSU, WISKY, PENN STATE (with sanctions probably won't be relevant for a long time), NEBRASKA, MSU. After these options it's a lot of bad teams, that's the difference between the sec and the big ten. The other teams are at least competitive.
Other teams like Kentucky, Auburn, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Missouri, Vandy, and Arkansas? Lol. Ok bro.
Class of 2008
Arkantard !!! Let's hire Bret after his crappy record this year... and last year Russell Wilson (his Cam Newton) was the only thing that kept him from having another sub par year. He'll be exposed just like Gene Chizick and gone in a few years. Should've kept the job security at Wisconsin, but I'm really happy to see him make a dumb move.

Only leaves hoke the joke to hate now.

On a related note - building permits for Waffle House and Pizza Barn just skyrocketed in Arkansas
