You Can Breathe; Ohio State Escapes Cal Upset Bid

Raise your hand if you thought this game would come down to one score? You – over there with the mustard stain on your shirt – why are you lying?

In a weird one, Ohio State's offense and defense showed up when it mattered as the Buckeyes survived a huge Cal rally to hold on for a 35-28 win in Ohio Stadium.

The Good: Miller's first half featuring the Alabraxton Shakes, Devin Smith's huge day and six sacks from the defense.

The Bad: Cal killing Ohio State on adjustments out of the halftime locker room and a poor tackling and coverage showing by the Silver Bullets.

Oh well, just win, baby! Right?

Thanks to Throw the Flag for the game footage.

Great game from Miller outside of that ghastly pick.

Defense screams 8-4. Worst tackling I've seen from an OSU defense in many years. Might need to shake up the staff in the offseason.

No they weren't, the first screen play (TD) was all on Barnett. The safeties have been the worst part of the defense. Bad in coverage, bad in run support, they take bad angles and have been bad at tackling.

Set your avi

True, Barnett screwed-up but I have a hard time faulting them if a zone is called and then the offense throws the screen. I did not see anyone get smoked... OK maybe once, but I cannot remember who that was. They were not bad in run support, Roby and Bryant both had some game saving stops.

to clarify: when I say "let go" I do not mean "fired". From what I've seen Heacock left and it was "amicable"...but that could just be the press release. But if Tressel was still the coach I imagine Heacock would still be here as well...which means we could have tried harder to keep him with the team. But that's purely conjeture on my part.

I think how Cal does the rest of the year will be more important in terms of judging how this game turned out. If they're a 5 win PAC team then we have some serious issues to be worried about. If they turn out to be the 3rd best PAC team behind SC and the ducks then this win, while not perfect, showed a lot of resolve in our guys.

People always try to find excuses for when we (tOSU) play poorly. And last week everyones fall back excuse was well UCF is actually a pretty good team/best OOC team we will face, when the reality is were just not clicking on all cylinders right now and its showing. Braxton is a one man freak show and the defense cant get out of its own way! I think im about one more shitty defensive game away from giving up on Fickell. Hell its not like he earned alot of trust and confidence last year lol.

I'd like to know what it would take for this crowd to be happy? Yes, it wasn't pretty, but I think Cal is a pretty good team. How many games in 2002 did the Buckeyes "bearly" win?

I think many Buckeye fans have more of the "entitled" mentality than the players.

Not entitled but this is "tOSU" and we expect greatness every year! And since when did Cal become a pretty good team? What because they damn near beat us today?? Just yesterday everyone was saying how bad they sucked and that we were gonna kill em by 30??!! Lol come'on im just pointing out the obivious. We have problems on defense and no matter how you slice it or dance around it the problems are there. Our defense isnt passing the eye test right now. In 2002 we had some studs to bail us out and that defense was mean! Right now we have Braxton and the rest of the team trying to find themselves...

How the hell does Tressel even make it into this thread?  Get it right, folks.  Coach Tress and his teams won games, played SOLID FUNDAMENTAL FOOTBALL, rarely missed tackles, rarely missed assignments,  and rarely squandered big leads.  Tress was smart enough to know to keep it simple, sustain drives with a fundamental ground game where everyone on the offense would know that our big back was going to carry the ball and be decisive with it.

I support Meyer and this Buckeye team, do not get me wrong.  But I'm tired of hearing so many people criticize Tress for being tight-lipped and running a tight ship.  Right now, we have coach who likes to go public with everything, and we have a team that loves to talk, but are we backing it up?

For me, this post is more about Tress because I'm so sick of fans disrespecting him.  Tress deserved to be fired, and I do like Meyer.  However, I think Meyer and his staff can take a few pages from the Winner's Manual and go back to perfecting Ohio fundamental football.  I wish we would use our arms and wrap up when we tackle.  And every so often, it's not a bad idea to run under center and smash the other team for 3 or 4 yards a pop.  This team can be great, but damn, we have to be SOLID first.

I hear you, especially about the defense not wrapping up.

The offense, however, is just starting to hit its stride.  We couldn't execute the pitch/option in weeks 1 and 2, but now we're doing it -- with Jordan Hall back (woohoo!).  Jake Stoneburner was a no-show, today he had 2 TDs.

If the RBs and Philly Brown get going too, it's off to the races.

I think it's going to be an up-and-down sort of season, but I feel a lot more confident that this team can score whenever it needs to -- not always the case with Bollman ball (leaving Tress out of it :))

"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"

moopdawg's picture

Don't mean to sound anti-Urban.  I'm sure he'll get this team and program on the right track.  I just appreciate how Tress's teams put in work and got Ws.  I was there when we suffocated Oregon's spread, no-huddle crap at the Rose Bowl.  We simply kept the ball from them.  Hope this team will be able to do that when necessary.

And the defense...I can't recall the last time I've seen our defense look so poor fundamentally (this year and last season).  No excuse for not being able to tackle.  That has nothing to do with the scheme, and everything to do with discipline.  Still got a lot more of the season to go.  Pretty sure we'll be alright, but it's gonna be a bumpy ride.

Colby3333's picture
Colby3333 on 15 Sep 2012 - 5:03pm #

Tress made the thread not out of disrepect, but out of excitement.....lighten up......won't you? That was a fun game to watch and it was an exact theme of players much better than their competition just going through the motions after building a lead and playing a little sloppy to allow the opponent to stay in the game until the end. JT teams did it all of the time but still found a way to win......that's what I loved about Tress and he was a hell of a coach for it. If that didn't remind you of many his games as coach of the bucks, I don't know how else you could describe that game. Oh, by the way, the defense ended up winning the game too.....in true Tress fashion.

Offensive playcalling was extremely predictable for a large portion of the game

I have no mustard stains on my shirt (I had pizza for lunch), but I did say this would be a close game, and called it 31-30 for the Buckeyes.  Cal has the players, and today they made some plays.  The Buckeyes have some issues --tackling, for instance-- and today they were exploited.  This was a good game to win.  It gets us to 3-0 going into what is essentially a practice scrimmage against UAB, gives us a chance to continue to integrate J Hall into the offense, gets our injured guys a chance to recover, and the team an opportunity to fine tune for B10 season.  I called this game, and said at the same time we will come back stronger than ever for MSU, a game we win by two TDs.  You heard it here first.

I predicted a close game. Cal always has playmakers and it showed today.

Too many penalties today, sloppy careless ones as well.

Glad Smith made up for his early drops with the big game he had.

Simon as been getting pressure all year..difference today was that Cals QB wasn't getting rid of it in the 2-3 seconds. Hankins is gone after this year the way he's  been playing..too good for his size.

Impressed by Bryant's play..the hitting and game winning pick was great! Howard looked..like 2011 Howard.

Why did Hall get all the carries today? Didn't make much sense. If that didn't piss off Rod I don't know what will.

Alot to improve on but I think Cals kicker handed us the W in a paper bag.

I would rather win 10 to 3.

Either our current D staff is not mashing well together or Jim Heacock was the real man behind our perennially great D of the past. Last year Jim Bollman got exposed in the absence of Tressell, and this year it might be Fickell's turn.

In the last ten years, we have never looked this bad on D, not even when we went against elite offenses like those of USC, Oregon, or Texas. If we keep on going like this, we may have a few new faces on the staff come next year.

Could somebody upload that Shazier hit where he up-ended that guy in the backfield on the far side. He had a good game, only got beat once and missed a tackle once if I recall. Had a sack too.

All of their missed FGs were 40+. Should a kid getting free school hit those? Yes. Did we get fortunate at times? Yes. However, to infer that Cal "gave" that game to us is nonsense. We have tons to work on, but we have W's. I trust the staff will get it together.

Not every team has a reliable kicker.

Penn State's kicker last week missed 4 field goals and 1 extra point (i believe that was the count) and he's on scholarship. Of course he's their 2nd string kicker since their more experienced 1st string kicker transferred to Texas.

Does anyone know what the hell happened on that deep (underthrown) ball to Philly? They called it incomplete, then showed the replay in the stadium and it was pretty obvious that he made the catch. It looked like Urban was screaming at the refs and tried to challenge but they wouldn't let him or something.

I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.

William on 15 Sep 2012 - 5:46pm #

Wasn't a catch. The back end of the ball bounced off of the turf, you could see the rubber pellets from the field turf bounce up.

Phoenix824's picture

It clearly hit the ground.    In HD on TV you see the little black pellets fly up when the ball hits the turf.

I guess it is time to build an even bigger HD TV for a scoreboard because it was obviously not a catch from home...

Wasn't impressed with Jordan Hall today. Dunn needed to be in there running in the middle. Jordan looked good on the options - get him the ball in space.

Best thing you can do with J Hall is run a screen pass with him..did we do that once today?

Screens only work to punish an over aggressive defense. They were being disciplined in their rush keeping Braxton from scrambling for first downs so rb screens may not have worked... wheel routes mightve worked though.

Here's my thoughts. Fickle is on the hot seat the rest of the year for the following two reasons. He constantly gets out schemed and is unable to make adjustments at the half.  Fick is a really nice guy and he is a true Buckeye, but common people, he isn't the D-Coordinator for this team. This was also evident last year when he was on his own and the defense was a sieve as it appears to be this year.

William's picture
William on 15 Sep 2012 - 6:24pm #

You know what's more ridiculous than the fact that you're judging a guy for calling a decent game, in which missed tackles and assignments led to points, instead of his play calls, is the fact that you can't spell come on or c'mon (you're spelling common, like common man, or meet me at Kennedy Commons).

Agree completely. The problem is linebackers and safeties being inconsistent with angles and tackling. This is a player issue. We still miss Homan and Rolle and Kurt Coleman basically. Shazier is going to be good but he is out of position a lot and both safeties are inconsistent and overaggressive often going for a TFL instead of keeping runners contained.

William's picture

Shazier and Bryant are two of the worst players I have ever seen at taking good angles.

Im not sold on Fick either. I just dont like him running the show. I think hes a good position coach, just dont want him signal calling. Im sorry this is tOSU and I bleed Scarlet & Gray but you dont get time to improve here. You either come out swinging or get the hell out of the way!

I think Withers should take more heat for the adjustments because he is the one up in the box and should be able to see what is going on and call down to the field to let them know.  I find it strange that everyone is up in Luke's grill without also mentioning Withers.

I think a swing pass to Jordan hall would have been nice to see. He didn't show that burst of speed. But it was his first game.

It most be frustrating to call this offense. Guys execute and drive down the field in a min. Then next series your wide receivers drop 5 yard passes. Then your next series your qb overthrows a wide open receiver. Very inconsistent play from our offense. Play calling was actually very good at times especially in the red zone.

Defense: doesn't matter what you call if your team dives at feet and decides not to wrap up! That was actually sad to watch. Also, 3 and outs will kill your defense. You can tell 3rd quarter we had no energy, and no pass rush!

My thought is we need to make better 2nd half adjustments!

I think I was one of the few people who this game would be alot closer than everyone else thought. My exact words yesterday were "Im not going to over look Cal. I think it may be a closer game than we think. I hope its a blowout but I wouldnt be surprised if they came here ready to fight tomorrow." Boy was I right about this one! I was at the game in the student section (37AA) and our defense just looked awful! I will admit Cal has alot of speed on the offensive side of the ball but we just stunk on D!! Missed tackles, open receivers, dropped picks, penalties, you name it!!  Braxton was a one man team out there today and that really has me worried... Maybe we need to rethink the whole "undefeated" dream. And no im not just saying this because of one game! Its the same problems that have plagued us since the beginning of the year and we dont seem to be getting any better! WTF defense!!! We have ALOT of work to do if we wanna beat MSU...

Bryant and shazier have awesome hits. They fly to the ball and crack people! Only problem with that is a lack of breaking down and wrapping up the ball carrier. Which we witnessed today! Poor angles, tackles, etc.

I love seeing someone get blowed up!

But, I hate seeing a rb gain a 150 yards on three carries because my defense try's to make a big hit or dive at someone's feet!

As Cal did surprise me 741 and Jason...I can't see USC coming off a lose repeating with another one or even a close game.  We allowed Cal to stay in the game with countless 3 and outs as other missed opportunities.  No to mention horrible tackling (as well as missed assignments...I noticed the hands up too)...I'm not sure what's going on but it's not OSU type of defense.  That was sad what I witnessed and both those long runs don't happen if the defense tackled and wrapped up instead of submarine tackling (which I'm sure they aren't be being coached to do...so the DB's and LBs need to stop before someone gets hurt). It was nice to see some pressure put on the QB but they still gashed the middle of the defense (running and passing). Lots to fix...

My in the stadium all three weeks observation about the DEF is this - about half the time the defensive secondary doesn't know what the call is... You see them looking worried, hands turned up like "what is my assignment" seconds before the offense snaps the ball. I don't know if this is Fickel, Coombs, or Withers' fault but it appears to me the defensive scheming and play calling is not where it needs to be. This DEF is reacting, not attacking, and the staff needs to f***ing step it up.

Biggest improvement I see this week compared to last week against UCF is in the offense. The players seemed to get lined up and knew the assignment/play without any confusion. Last week, it looked as if the RBs and some of the receivers were kinda running around not knowing where to line up or what they play was. So I think they got that cleaned up.

However, on the defensive side of things......

I recall seeing Travis Howard with his arms up like WTF? pre snap once. That's never good to see by a DB pre snap. I think the defense is having a hard time with knowing what the call is, communication, and discipline. I'm not sure with the new staff changes if a lot changed on the defense this year, so far it doesn't look like anything major but I have to wonder if it has anything to do with having co-defenseive coordinators vs. just THE defensive coordinator. To my understanding, Fickell is in the booth while Withers is on the sideline?

After a number of drinks yesterday I too was calling for Fickell's job but after my coffee this morning I think the major problem is execution.  Most of Cal's yardage came on big plays either after bad tackling/angle of pursuit or missed assignments.  I can't blame bad tackling on the coaching staff and the players have to know where to be when they are on the field.  The defense (especially the linebackers and db's) has to attack not react as 741 pointed out and hopefully that comes with more experience and film study.  I can't hold the coaches blameless on the deficiencies of the defense but they can only teach and motivate.  The players have to step up and start making plays.

Wow...a wins a win...but much to work on.  In no order of importance, penalties, tackling, reading and movement/flow by LBs, and overall play in general.  This team doesn't fix simple things as the game goes on (like when RB #5 is in...he's going to run the ball...).  It almost seems like they're playing to the level of their opponent last two games.  I'm no longer making any predictions on upcoming games...because it's almost impossible to determine how this team will perform on either side of the ball at this point.
